Re: [Elementary-dev-community] Elementary OS Luna Promotion Video

2012-08-30 Thread Harvey Cabaguio
You can take a look here for all our 'official' fonts.
http://elementaryos.org/journal/typography-gtk3

I think one video would suffice. On the homepage we need to tell people
what elementary is and what they do.

I think someone else had problems being stuck in the bootloader as well.
Hop on #elementary in irc.freenode.net.

Pim, thanks for the suggestion. I agree that it should have more
elementary apps... But I was aiming this video more toward non-Linux users,
so I didn't think it would matter much. We should make another more
 technical video for linux users.

Also, I agree some parts are pretty fast, and I do have things to hide!
For example, the scene with software store ended abruptly because a pop up
comes up immediately afterward with user agreement, and I didn't want to
include that. I've been trying really hard to fit the scenes to the video,
and I hope the next one will be better.

Sigh, a bit disappointed that it doesn't live up to everyone's
 expectation..

Re: [Elementary-dev-community] Elementary OS Luna Promotion Video

2012-08-30 Thread piggy classy
Sorry, I forgot to do "reply all" in my last message...

Thanks everyone for all the comments.

The song was taken from this Google video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxKJ7yN-PPM&feature=plcp
I think it's a commissioned music, since I couldn't find it anywhere with
Google.

Honestly, I didn't start making it until I've found this song. As soon as I
heard it, I knew it would be a good song for Luna promotion video:)

I thought URW Gothic is the official elementary font?

I think for the official Luna promotion video, we need to make two of them:
a short one (screen recording) to go on the front page and a longer one
(people talking and screen recording) in the Discover page with
explanations for each apps.

Another problem I've heard from some other people is that they couldn't
really understand what elementary os is by just visiting the website. Maybe
we should add something to the front page explaining what it is?

Also, the video was made with my uncle's laptop, which I have to give back
this weekend. My own laptop gets stuck at the booting process, and I
wouldn't be able to make more videos until that's fixed:(

Re: [Elementary-dev-community] Elementary OS Luna Promotion Video

2012-08-30 Thread Daniel Foré
Hey Piggy,

Don't be disappointed! Your work is very good. It's only that we all have
gotten used to pushing each other for absolute perfection ;)

I love the song. Is it a free song that we can actually use?

I agree that it should show off only default apps to avoid confusion about
what Luna does out of the box. The HTML5 apps like Angry Birds should also
work in Midori just fine :)

I think we need to be especially strict about showing only Midori as our
web browser simply because we have a lot of competition, FUD, and
misconceptions to overcome with it. People should know that it's just as
fast and just as capable as the big players (just like our OS!)

I showed the video off to my dad (old guy test) and he said he really
enjoyed it, but that the transitions were too fast. I agree that in some
cases it felt like things weren't shown on the screen long enough to really
absorb.

Another thing I would make sure is to use either Open Sans or Open Sans
Light for your font. This would more closely tie your ad into our official
branding.

Also "elementary" is never capitalized. So, for the website I think it's
fine to write either "elementaryOS.org" or "elementaryos.org"

But I liked the timing with the music, the selection of features you chose
to show off and the overall feel. It just felt good to watch :)

Re: [Elementary-dev-community] Fan Made Youtube Video for Luna

2012-08-30 Thread satch...@gmail.com
Cons:

   1. It shows off non-default applications.
   2. Some of the applications aren't highlighted long enough.
   3. It seems disorganised. There's isn't a flow in what is being shown.

Pros:

   1. It's peppy, brief and conveys all of elementary's buzzwords.
   2. The song is excellent (is it free? I can't find it) and "Life is
   Beautiful" goes perfectly Luna.
   3. The clip from Up is perfectly timed as is the picture of the monster
with the mustache (obviously the same clip can't be used, but it's a subtle
metaphor that the official promo can take inspiration from)
