Re: [Elementary-dev-community] Picking up BeatBox

2012-10-26 Thread Scott Ringwelski
Hey guys, thanks for your replies.

Victor and I talked about this a little bit. What I am essentially looking
for is someone to continue the project.

That said, while talking with Victor there is one thing I would like to
*not* happen that I did not think of as an option before, and that is for a
major code overwrite into the BeatBox project. Working on Noise under
lp:beat-box doesn't seem like a great choice to me.

Other than that though, I'm really open to ideas.

If I were to propose an option myself, it would be to continue with Noise
for Luna. And for Luna + 1, merge Noise into BeatBox and continue under
BeatBox. This is similar to what Sergey suggested.

Right now it's a little bit behind the times, but should catch up with bzr

I'll move the package to elementary Daily PPA when it clears UX team review.

Luna is a different story, though. I agree on keeping the brand consistent

Re: [Elementary-dev-community] Picking up BeatBox

2012-10-26 Thread Victor Eduardo
Scott,
sorry for the late response!

It's been almost two years since you started working on BeatBox, and so far
you've done an amazing job!

I think it would not be fair to let a project like BeatBox die, and this seems
to be a good chance to put an end to the duplication of labor. Sadly, this
doesn't happen under the circumstances we'd all have liked (joining forces
instead of dropping one of the projects). I see that both projects have
diverged a lot over the last months, and merging them back isn't a
small/trivial task; doing it before Luna would be counterproductive.

I guess we could kill Noise as a project/brand, and move all the work to
BeatBox, but the real merge wouldn't happen until L+1; I'd keep working on
Noise under lp:beat-box. Would you agree with that?

It would be a shame if we shipped a player named "Noise" for Luna, and
"BeatBox" for L+1. Using the same brand from the start is desired.

Thanks in advance for your replies. I understand if you don't agree with my
solution. We can always discuss other alternatives.

P.S: I'm not talking on behalf of elementary. What you read above are just my
personal thoughts.

elementary dev,

Recently I have picked up on a new side project that I am putting 100% of my
free time to, which means that I no longer have time for working on BeatBox.
Although it is difficult for me to do, I'd like to pass the project off to an
able team to maintain the project, and what better team than elementary.

I of course realize that you have Noise, but I do think that (core-wise) there
are some advantages in BeatBox's recent core refractor that would otherwise
take you a very long time to accomplish in Noise given nobody knows the core as
well as I do. And, that said, we can all agree on the fact that BeatBox/Noise
need(ed) a core refractor rather badly.

What I am proposing is a complete take over. It's yours to do as you please.

Regardless of your answer, I am looking forward to hearing back from you all.

Re: [Elementary-dev-community] New plank concept

2012-10-26 Thread Sergey Shnatsel Davidoff
Hi Sergey,

I've proposed a similar design a while ago:
http://shnatsel.blogspot.com/2012/07/application-dock-for-2010s.html

The simple argument that defeated it was that random people I asked couldn't
understand how to work with that, didn't recognize the icons or the whole thing
as task switcher, etc. I tried some tweaks to remedy that but neither really
worked.

There are also trickier problems with this, see Daniel's excellent comment on
the post for details.

Hello

At the first, I wanted offer a vision of the dock.

Here are some points:
* I think it would be nice to dock in a thin line at the bottom of the screen
with colorful application indicators. The colors are taken from the application
icons, as in the unity panel.

Of course, we must do in the settings to disable this "compact" mode. Then fill
the background panel and application indicators will be padded to an icon.

* Active applications is marked by an arrow pointing down. Arrow color is taken
from the color of the application (the lower part)

* Indicator color of urgent window brightens and lights. Similar can be seen in
the unity panel.

* When you move the pointer down the screen, with some force (depending on
configuration), then swim application icons, with animation.

* Color of the panel is the same, what is the background color, which displays
the desktop.

At the second, I wanted to say - can be implemented dock as part of the gala or
wing-panel?

PS
I'm not a designer, so it could look ugly.

Re: [Elementary-dev-community] New plank concept

2012-10-26 Thread Cassidy James
Сергей,

I think the only way to implement something like this would be to keep the
current hide mode we have and to just make it look like this when it hides.
But then again I think it's not necessary.

Thanks for the idea and mockups, and I *would* be interested in seeing this
developed as some sort of third-party dock, but I don't think it fits with
our plans for the elementary dock.

Cassidy James
