Re: [Elementary-dev-community] Future of Wingpanel

2013-08-26 Thread Harvey Cabaguio
Personally, I think there's no need to be complicated with the Audience
stuff. When Audience is fullscreen wingpanel will just fade out, and when
the user moves their mouse near wingpanel it fades back in.

 Kurt,

What Sergey means is having apps, like Audience (and I think

So for the video-player Audience it is handy to still provide access to
the sound indicator such that it can be used for adjusting the volume.

I'm writing to announce the codename of the next elementary
 release:
  Wanking Wallaby

  Jk. What is this, Ubuntu?

I'm leaning strongly towards Isis for this one. It's short (2
syllables), should be generally pretty easy to pronounce, etc.
 Isis
is the egyptian mother god of the throne, friend of slaves,
sinners, artisans, and the downtrodden. You can read up more

Munchor says I should go full Hitler and not allow any

 that.
If not, let's go with it! (And even if so, we'll probably still
 go
  with it!)

Also, I think in general most of us think it would be the best
 idea
to release Isis (see, I'm already going with it) as closely as
possible to Ubuntu 14.04. We have a lot to prove about our
 ability
to provide updates in a timely manner and we're getting some
negative feedback from developers/nerds about our 12.04 base. So
let's address that and make sure that elementary is the best
 open
platform for both users and developers (and I guess nerds too).

Cody is currently working on updating Congrego to spit out some
super bleeding edge Saucy-based builds. If any of you are
 already on
Saucy, you know how broken Pantheon currently is. Indicators and
Plugs are huge problems that we need to address. We're
 considering
moving both of these into lib peas plugins for Wingpanel and
Switchboard (respectively). Any feedback on that plan is very
 welcome.

In general, the first priority for Isis is going to be updating
 all
of our apps to compile/run with the latest libraries. You should
know that Midori with the latest webkitGTK is amazing. I'm
 working
on porting eGtk and it's going pretty swell. You should also
 know
that all the fancy libaccounts stuff is now available for
 someone to
start playing with so we can get sweet online

But obviously the big question is, What now?

Well I have some amazing news: feature freeze is finally over! It's time
to have a little fun again. No more nose-to-the-grind with all the bug
fixing. I myself am writing this from my extremely unstable Saucy install
that will probably crash in a few minutes for no apparent reason. And it's
 freaking exciting!

So my first recommendation for you guys is to upgrade yourselves. We all
know that 12.04 (and thus Luna) is aging when we're talking about
development. I don't think we've come to any official decision, but most of
us have been casually throwing around the idea that Luna +1 should release
alongside Ubuntu 14.04. We're all super excited about the latest Gtk,
 Clutter, etc.

In case you didn't already know, there's a handful of suggestions for
what to work on in Luna +1 here:
 https://launchpad.net/elementary/+milestone/0.3-beta1

But honestly, take this time to be free. You deserve it. Have fun. Give
yourself a pat on the back for how awesome you all are.

Once the dust settles on this release, we might want to talk about having
another contributor meeting in IRC to get our heads on straight and decide
on some general guidelines for Luna +1 (like a real codename, if we really
want to release with 14.04, etc)

 Thanks again everyone and congratulations!

what elementary is and what they do.

I think someone else had problems being stuck in the bootloader as well.

Honestly, I didn't start making it until I've found this song. As soon as
I heard it, I knew it would be a good song for Luna promotion video:)

I thought URW Gothic is the official elementary font?

I think for the official Luna promotion video, we need to make two of
them: a short one (screen recording) to go on the front page and a longer
one (people talking and screen recording) in the Discover page with
 explanations for each apps.

Another problem I've heard from some other people is that they couldn't
really understand what elementary os is by just visiting the website. Maybe
we should add something to the front page explaining what it is?

Also, the video was made with my uncle's laptop, which I have to give back
this weekend. My own laptop gets stuck at the booting process, and I
wouldn't be able to make more videos until that's fixed:(

I love the song. Is it a free song that we can actually use?

I agree that it should show off only default apps to avoid confusion
about what Luna does out of the box. The HTML5 apps like Angry Birds should
also work in Midori just fine :)

I think we need to be especially strict about showing only Midori as our
web browser simply because we have a lot of competition, FUD, and
misconceptions to overcome with it. People should know that it's just as
fast and just as capable as the big players (just like our OS!)

I showed the video off to my dad (old guy test) and he said he really
enjoyed it, but that the transitions were too fast. I agree that in some
cases it felt like things weren't shown on the screen long enough to really
 absorb.

Another thing I would make sure is to use either Open Sans or Open Sans
Light for your font. This would more closely tie your ad into our official
 branding.

Also elementary is never capitalized. So, for the website I think it's
fine to write either elementaryOS.org or elementaryos.org

But I liked the timing with the music, the selection of features you
chose to show off and the overall feel. It just felt good to watch :)

Pim, thanks for the suggestion. I agree that it should have more
elementary apps... But I was aiming this video more toward non-Linux users,
so I didn't think it would matter much. We should make another more
 technical video for linux users.

Also, I agree some parts are pretty fast, and I do have things to hide!
For example, the scene with software store ended abruptly because a pop up
comes up immediately afterward with user agreement, and I didn't want to
include that. I've been trying really hard to fit the scenes to the video,
and I hope the next one will be better.

Sigh, a bit disappointed that it doesn't live up to everyone's
 expectation..
