Oh well. Thanks for taking the time. All that "[glesx] Can not create colormap surface" stuff isn't an issue then? I've tried filing a bug with amd in the past and been ignored (there is no pseudocolor visual even though the log file says that pseudocolor is enabled), but I suppose it couldn't hurt to try again. It would be a coincidence if the fvwm developers were running fglrx, and I'm not at all sure that it is an fvwm problem, given that icewm (mis)behaves the same way. I'll report back if I make any progress. Thanks! I rebooted after upgrading the kernel, of course, into level 3, but I was thinking that since X wasn't running there would be no need after upgrading fglrx (and that with linux, you never need to reboot :-) ). But now I have rebooted and X is working, or at least it doesn't segfault. Unfortunately, the fvwm window manager, which was always reliable before, is now messed up. It leaves ghosts behind when windows move. I'll have to try a different window manager to see whether it is just fvwm. If it is, that is a problem for a different list.
