We provide these kernels for hardware testing in an effort to identify
new/updated drivers which can then be targeted for backporting as kmod
packages. Meanwhile, these kernels may provide interim relief to
people with non-functional hardware. We stress that we consider such
kernels as a last resort for those who are unable to get their
hardware working using the RHEL-6 kernel with supplementary kmod
packages.

These packages are provided As-Is with no implied warranty or
support. Using the kernel-ml may expose your system to security,
performance and/or data corruption issues. Since timely updates may
not be available from the ELRepo Project, the end user has the
ultimate responsibility for deciding whether to continue using the
kernel-ml packages in regular service.

The packages are intentionally named kernel-ml so as not to conflict
with the RHEL-6 kernels and, as such, they may be installed and
updated alongside the regular kernel. The kernel configuration is
based upon a default RHEL-6 configuration with added functionality
enabled as appropriate.

If a bug is found when using these kernels, the end user is encouraged
to report it upstream to the Linux Kernel Bug Tracker [1] and, for our
reference, to the ELRepo bug tracker [2]. By taking such action, the
reporter will be assisting the kernel developers, Red Hat and the Open
Source Community as a whole.

Thank you,

The ELRepo Team.

Thank you for your message and the URL to the source tarball. You
clearly know all the packages that I have built better than I do! :-)
I'll put this on my ToDo list and try and get the updated package
released in the coming 24 hours.

Hi Maurits,

As you will have now seen from the announcements, the aacraid kmod
packages have now been updated.

It was a rather elongated 24 hours but we discovered an issue with our
RHEL 6 build system which prevented the EL6 packages being built.
Rather than release just the EL5 package set, I decided to wait until
both were built and then release them together.

Thank you for keeping a look-out for updated source releases and
letting us know.

Alan.

Re: [elrepo] How long does kernel release stay in the downloads area?

2012-10-04 Thread Alan Bartlett
A couple of quick comments from me.

An upstream bug-fix to kernel-ml-3.5.4-1.el6.elrepo, that is
kernel-ml-3.5.5-1.el6.elrepo, is currently in the build-queue and will
be released later today.

The successor to the kernel-ml-3.5.x package,
kernel-ml-3.6.0-1.el6.elrepo is currently being configured, verified,
etc, and, all being well, should be released this week.

Hence the kernel-ml package is one that constantly evolves and
progresses in a forwards direction.

Re: [elrepo] kernel/kernel-lts separation

2012-10-11 Thread Alan Bartlett
I have considered everyone's comments, including that from Trevor.

On the whole, I am agreeable with making the split into kernel-ml
(currently 3.6.x) and kernel-lt (currently 3.0.y) for EL6.

How would people like this to be implemented?

Alan.

  happens to be.

Unless the desired action is to update to the latest LTS kernel at that
point? At which time a user can add an exclude for kernel-lt if they want to
 stay at an unsupported 3.0.y.

But I take your point. What do others think?

I am not in favor of renaming the packages to kernel-lts (or anything but
kernel-ml). For all practical purposes, sticking to one name, but offering
(sub)repositories for the different versions offers everything.

 So I would propose this:

   kernel-ml/
   kernel-ml/repodata/
   kernel-ml/3.0/
   kernel-ml/3.0/repodata/
   kernel-ml/3.8/
   kernel-ml/3.8/repodata/

You can select the specific version you want to hook into, either the parent
directory if you prefer to stick with the latest, or one of the major
 version repositories.

If you have different names for different releases (or even just the ml/lts
split) it becomes harder for the user to understand how this affects the
 system.

Besides, we do not influence when a release becomes stable, and when it not
longer is updated. So keeping all under the generic 'mainline' brand is much
 clearer.

Is there a need for the proposed complexity ?

Hmm . . . so what has been proposed is complex but what you propose,
above, is not added complexity?

Perhaps the simplest thing is for me is to type: No. No change. No
nothing. No further releases from me. I've shown you all how to do it,
now get on with it yourselves. :-)

But I won't. I will hand the decision process over to my number two,
Akemi and ask that toracat tells burakkucat what is the final outcome
(of what is likely to be an extended discussion process) once it has
been reached.

Over to toracat.

We provide these kernels for hardware testing in an effort to identify
new/updated drivers which can then be targeted for backporting as kmod
packages. Meanwhile, these kernels may provide interim relief to
people with non-functional hardware. We stress that we consider such
kernels as a last resort for those who are unable to get their
hardware working using the RHEL-5 kernel with supplementary kmod
packages.

These packages are provided As-Is with no implied warranty or
support. Using the kernel-lt may expose your system to security,
performance and/or data corruption issues. Since timely updates may
not be available from the ELRepo Project, the end user has the
ultimate responsibility for deciding whether to continue using the
kernel-lt packages in regular service.

The packages are intentionally named kernel-lt so as not to conflict
with the RHEL-5 kernels and, as such, they may be installed and
updated alongside the regular kernel. The kernel configuration is
based upon a default RHEL-5 configuration with added functionality
enabled as appropriate.

[elrepo] Announcement: EL6 Updated kernel-ml Release [Version 3.6.4-1.el6.elrepo]

2012-10-29 Thread Alan Bartlett
Announcing the release of the kernel-ml-3.6.4-1.el6.elrepo packages
into the EL6 elrepo-kernel repository:

http://elrepo.org/tiki/kernel-ml

The following files are currently syncing to the mirrors:

I is possible to get CONFIG_ARPD set in the lt kernel? It is needed to allow

I can see no reason why not. :-)

I will need to closely examine that part of the configuration file but
in principle, no problem. If I have not responded in two - three days,

We provide these kernels for hardware testing in an effort to identify

people with non-functional hardware. We stress that we consider such
kernels as a last resort for those who are unable to get their

These packages are provided As-Is with no implied warranty or

performance and/or data corruption issues. Since timely updates may
not be available from the ELRepo Project, the end user has the
ultimate responsibility for deciding whether to continue using the
kernel-lt packages in regular service.

The packages are intentionally named kernel-lt so as not to conflict
with the RHEL-6 kernels and, as such, they may be installed and
updated alongside the regular kernel. The kernel configuration is
based upon a default RHEL-6 configuration with added functionality
enabled as appropriate.

If a bug is found when using these kernels, the end user is encouraged

Re: [elrepo] QLogic iSCSI HBA drivers

2012-12-22 Thread Alan Bartlett

I have been experiencing some issues with the included CentOS drivers for
the following QLogic card, qle4060c. I have posted about it in the CentOS
 forums here:
 https://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=40499forum=57
(all important details can be found there)

What is essentially happening (to the best of my knowledge) is the included
drivers are version 5.02.00.00.06.03-k4. However, when I try to install the
CLI management tools from Qlogic it is requesting a more recent driver
version, 5.02.07.02.05.06-c0 (or newer). This is where I am stuck.

Attempts to compile a newer driver fail, as outlined in the above post. I am
certain my lack of experience is the root cause of the problem so I am
seeking some assistance in resolving this issue. Here are some specific
 questions I have:

 1) Before compiling a newer version of a driver is it necessary to remove
any previous versions? Could this be preventing the newer drivers from
 compiling?

 2) If 'yes' to above how would I go about removing them?

Hi Liano,

I can easily answer your three questions, thus --

1) No. No.

2) N/A

On checking with the QLogic downloads page I see that version
5.03.01.04.00.00-k0 is the current iSCSI driver for RHEL 6u3 whereas
version 5.03.01.04.05.07-k0 is the current driver for RHEL 5u8. I can
see the potential for confusion!

Let me see what I can do.

kmod-qla4xxx-5.03.01.04.00.00-1.el6.elrepo.x86_64.rpm
qla4xxx-kmod-5.03.01.04.00.00-1.el6.elrepo.src.rpm

Once you have the ELRepo public key installed and the repository
access configured for the target system, please install the relevant
kmod package by --

yum --disablerepo \* --enablerepo elrepo-testing install kmod-qla4xxx

Assuming successful installation of the package, a reboot of the
target system would then be appropriate.

Please test, when convenient and then provide your report.

Interesting (in a puzzling way). It could be that your fastest

does not explain the 'repository not found' message.

Have you tried a 'yum clean all', followed by a 'yum --disableplugin

If that show the package is available, use --

the driver is now being used? Any evidence in 'dmesg' or

If the appropriate version 5.03 driver is installed and is

Re: [elrepo] problem building kmod-wl on Centos6.3 with Elrepo-kernel-ml.De

The compat-wireless kmod package should provide support for that
wireless card with the distributed kernel. Perhaps Phil Perry (package
maintainer) will comment / make a suggestion, when his time permits?

I am concerned about stable ABI, but I was thinking - it seems to me I
have to build the kmod-wl rpm on a lot of laptops in order to get the
 Broadcom cards to work.
I want updated machines, so on a kernel update, I have to redo the build,
 unless I'm wrong.
 That's not possible.
So I thougt better to have Centos laptops with ml-kernels 3.7. than go
to Centos6.4 in a while and still have older Centos6.3 kernels

But building the kmod-wl on the latest Centos kernel works, so for the
moment the users have wireless. :-)

If you build the kmod-wl package on one of the laptops, then you job
is almost done. Copy the kmod-wl-*.rpm file you have just built to a
USB memory stick and then use it to install the package on each of the
other laptop systems. The package should remain usable for all kernels
released for CentOS 6.3 . . . it may need to be rebuilt for the first
released kernel of CentOS 6.4 but that is something for the future.

If you use a kernel from the ELRepo Project kernel-lt or kernel-ml
series, there is no concept of a stable ABI and none of the ELRepo
Project kmod packages are built to be used with either of those kernel
series. The best way to consider either the kernel-lt or kernel-ml
packages is as a 'super kmod package' in its own right. If you need to
build an 'external' module for one of those kernels, it will have to
be rebuilt for each and every new kernel release.

So just to clarify, as I now understand your situation, you have
successfully built the kmod-wl package for the current default CentOS
6.3 kernel and once it is distributed to all of the laptop systems
they will all have a working wireless network connection?

The driver ID is as follow
 [dev@netwarrior ~]$ lspci -n | grep 00:02.0
 00:02.0 0300: 8086:0be1 (rev 09)

I have checked ELRepo and it appears that the driver is not supported. I
have checked intel's Linux site [0] and it appears that the drivers should
be in kernel 3.6.5 and above, therefore I installed kernel-ml title CentOS
(3.7.2-1.el6.elrepo.i686). Prior to getting the login prompt I just get a

Currently the following intel drivers is installed.

Will there be a package available for the mention graphics card for the

2.6.32-279.19.1.el6.i686 or shall I file a bug for the blank screen that I
 am getting with kernel-ml 3.7.2-1.el6.elrepo.i686

 [0] https://01.org/linuxgraphics/

I assume you are booting, by default, into runlevel 5. Have you tested
booting into runlevel 3 and then invoking 'startx' from the CLI,
noting any errors that may be displayed?

With regards to the kernel-ml package, unless it is a packaging error
on our part, it will not be meaningful to open a bug report against
it. From what you have described, it reads as if you are experiencing
a problem with user-land software -- hence my suggestion, above, to
try booting to CLI mode.

As for updating the Intel 'X' driver and associated software packages,
I am not sure who is currently maintaining them . . . perhaps the best
way forward would be for you to open an RFE against the
xorg-x11-drv-intel-2.20.3-2.el6.elrepo package and ask for it to be
updated.

O.k. So that definitely confirms a problem with the 'X' server
configuration or the drivers available for your video chipset. (Which
is not my area of expertise.)

Below is the content of the Xorg.5.log after I have booted with the stock
 CentOS kernel.

That may show something useful . . . perhaps others would care to comment?

What it does do is to give you a template for an xorg.conf file that
you could hand-craft and drop into the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/
directory.

[code]
 [44.640] Section Device
[44.640] IdentifierBuiltin Default intel Device 0
 [44.640] Driverintel
 [44.640] EndSection
 [44.640] Section Screen
[44.640] IdentifierBuiltin Default intel Screen 0
[44.640] DeviceBuiltin Default intel Device 0
 [44.640] EndSection
 [44.640] Section Device
[44.640] IdentifierBuiltin Default vesa Device 0
 [44.641] Drivervesa
 [44.641] EndSection
 [44.641] Section Screen
[44.641] IdentifierBuiltin Default vesa Screen 0
[44.641] DeviceBuiltin Default vesa Device 0
 [44.641] EndSection
 [44.641] Section Device
[44.641] IdentifierBuiltin Default fbdev Device 0
 [44.641] Driverfbdev
 [44.641] EndSection
 [44.641] Section Screen
[44.641] IdentifierBuiltin Default fbdev Screen 0
[44.641] DeviceBuiltin Default fbdev Device 0
 [44.641] EndSection
 [44.641] Section ServerLayout
 [44.641] IdentifierBuiltin Default Layout
[44.641] ScreenBuiltin Default intel Screen 0
[44.641] ScreenBuiltin Default vesa Screen 0
[44.641] ScreenBuiltin Default fbdev Screen 0
 [44.641] EndSection
[/code]

Copy / paste the above section into a file and the strip off the [
44.640] or [44.641] (as appropriate) that is at
the beginning of each line. That will then be your basic template
xorg.conf file. (Keep a pristine copy safe, somewhere else.) Hopefully
other subscribers to this list will be able to suggest lines to add to
or remove from your working copy. (/etc/X11/xord.conf.d/xorg.conf) It
should be possible to get that basic display to work in graphical mode
by that method. (I'm not the person able to assist you,
unfortunately.)

I am not too familiar with the RFE process can you shed some light on this
or point me in the right direction?

As for opening an RFE (request for enhancement), just go to the ELRepo
bug tracker [1], open a ticket against the existing xorg-x11-drv-intel
package and ask for it to be updated to the latest version. Etc. :)

There's no magic involved. By making the request that way, you will
ensure that it is seen by all the Admin staff and the current package
maintainer.

@ELRepo Project community members -- Please join in if you feel you
can assist Earl with getting a working basic graphical interface with
his system

We provide these kernels for hardware testing in an effort to identify
new/updated drivers which can then be targeted for backporting as kmod
packages. Meanwhile, these kernels may provide interim relief to
people with non-functional hardware. We stress that we consider such
kernels as a last resort for those who are unable to get their
hardware working using the RHEL kernel with supplementary kmod

The packages are intentionally named kernel-lt so as not to conflict
with the RHEL kernels and, as such, they may be installed and updated
alongside the regular kernel. The kernel configuration is based upon a
default RHEL configuration with added functionality enabled as
appropriate.

We provide these kernels for hardware testing in an effort to identify
new/updated drivers which can then be targeted for backporting as kmod
packages. Meanwhile, these kernels may provide interim relief to
people with non-functional hardware. We stress that we consider such
kernels as a last resort for those who are unable to get their
hardware working using the RHEL kernel with supplementary kmod

The packages are intentionally named kernel-ml so as not to conflict
with the RHEL kernels and, as such, they may be installed and updated
alongside the regular kernel. The kernel configuration is based upon a
default RHEL configuration with added functionality enabled as
appropriate.
