I have been following your discussion for several days and if I understand it correctly promoting \[ to an element is the most controversial. Isn’t the behavior of fill-paragraph (see https://emacs.stackexchange.com/q/29122/14127 <https://emacs.stackexchange.com/q/29122/14127>) the biggest inconvenience? Perhaps adding a proper fill-nobreak-predicate (see https://emacs.stackexchange.com/a/12419/14127 <https://emacs.stackexchange.com/a/12419/14127>) would be enough?
