[O] insonsistency in source code at http://orgmode.org/worg/org-tutorials/org-beamer/tutorial.html
a bit more pedantry, but i'm currently collecting examples of org/beamer processing to see how well i can reproduce them, and at org's own example here: http://orgmode.org/worg/org-tutorials/org-beamer/tutorial.html if you follow the link in footnote 1, you see the alleged .org source as containing: ... snip ... #+LINK_UP: #+LINK_HOME: #+startup: oddeven #+startup: beamer #+LaTeX_CLASS: beamer #+LaTeX_CLASS_OPTIONS: [bigger] #+latex_header: \modebeamer{\usetheme{Madrid}} #+BEAMER_FRAME_LEVEL: 2 #+COLUMNS: %20ITEM %13BEAMER_env(Env) %6BEAMER_envargs(Args) %4BEAMER_col(Col) %7BEAMER_extra(Extra) * Introduction ... snip ... but if you click on the button Show Org Source at the very bottom, you see: ... snip ... #+LINK_UP: #+LINK_HOME: #+startup: oddeven * Introduction ... snip ... quite simply, the two sources are not the same, which might confuse some folks (for me, the first example will be processed, while the second won't be). in any event, it would be useful if the source was displayed consistently. rday -- Robert P. Could you reiterate questions more concretely? snip I *think* I get the question, but to Rasmus' point, could you provide some examples of what an end product might look like? This would be a tangible way for you to make the details of your request known. Rather than base the request in reference to the site link you provided, something more like: - We have x number of courses, and each one has y article-style and z presentation style teaching documents (manuals, tutorials, class guides, etc.) - An example of a representative manual is here: url - An example of a representative presentation is here: url - Repeat for any other documents you're looking to redo Then provide a ballpark example of what you're looking to transform the above into. Perhaps link to a manual/presentation you've found that you would like to emulate certain characteristics of? Lastly, a list of deliverables would be nice. For example, I would like: - A .emacs that could be shared among all documentation users - A custom beamer template - A custom LaTeX article class designed to produce the format above - etc. Just some thoughts to help others respond to something more concrete. I looked around the site at the courseware section as you pointed out. I think I get what you want, but it would still be helpful to have at least some of the above for others in order to know what they are being asked to do. It also helps some of us know what level of org-mode knowledge would be required to help you. Lastly, what, if any, compensation is involved. ok, i'll try to be as detailed as i can, even though i'm still trying to wrap my head around all of the features org-mode and beamer give me. (aside: while having someone do this for me remotely might work out, i'd still prefer to find someone local here in ottawa to sit down with since i'm not even going to *know* all the questions i want to ask until i see things happening.) my colleague and i are looking to both convert existing courseware manuals and write new manuals in beamer format. representative manuals can be seen here in both ODP and PDF format (my specialty will be the linux content manuals): http://www.opersys.com/training as you can see, the emphasis will be on the typical bulleted list format, while i personally will want to include *copious* amounts of source code snippets while writing about the linux kernel and device drivers. i am not an accomplished user of *any* of the technologies in the toolchain -- org-mode, emacs, latex or beamer. i have used emacs in outline mode for quite some time for *designing* new manuals and, for me, the whole outline mode feature of org-mode is essential; that's how i want to lay out and start writing new manuals. what i'm after is as much infrastructure as i need to get started writing one or more manuals. by infrastructure, i mean setting up a working directory on my ubuntu system which will support not just writing individual manuals, but factoring out common content (copyrights, etc) and being able to include it in all manuals arbitrarily. so, in the end, i'm after a fairly complete publishing and processing toolchain that will take me from writing .org files to the final beamer files for each manual. a recent example on this list shows why i'd like to hire someone to help, to save me time. i asked why a simple H:3 option didn't give me three levels of headings, even though the org-mode user manual *clearly* suggested that's how to do it. a couple people responded, describing a need to use require and org-e-beamer and org-export-dispatch. but while i'm sure that's the solution, i would *never* figured that out on my own since i would have had no idea where to look. what i'm after right now is a starting infrastructure so i can start cramming content into manuals, and i can tweak over time as i learn what else i can do. as for compensation, if you can help, let me know your rate and we can chat. rday -- Robert P. [O] any org[/beamer] experts in the ottawa area available for consulting?
here's the thing -- i can keep asking noob-level questions (i probably still will), but i'm also *more* than happy to find someone who knows this stuff intimately in the ottawa area with whom i can sit down and hash out all the details i need to know to generate a ton of courseware manuals in short order. the eventual goal is to transform the courses here: http://www.opersys.com/training from their current ODP/PDF format into org/beamer format (from which we will, of course, churn out the final PDF). and i've got a number of new manuals under construction as well. here's the manual i'm working on right now: http://www.opersys.com/training/linux-device-drivers under the Courseware tab, you can see the (CC-licensed) slides in both ODP and PDF format, so you can get an idea of what i'm after. and even though there are existing manuals, the ones i'm working on will be changing so much that i'm thinking of it as effectively rewriting from scratch, rather than trying to salvage what's there. if someone's available for a quick contract, let me know -- i'd like to hash out all the issues i need to define a nice template for manuals, factor out common content, create a full processing toolchain for this ... you get the idea. (if anyone has done all this and is willing to share, that would be peachy; again, i have no problem compensating someone for their assistance.) rday p.s. i asked this on the org list hoping for someone who also knows beamer, of course. if that doesn't work, i can ask on the beamer list, looking for someone who also knows org. :-) -- Robert P. [O] how can i get 3 section levels instead of just 2?
i've puzzled over the manual and can't seem to find the switch to give me 3 section levels rather than the 2 i'm getting now. section 11.1 in the manual reads: === start Headings and sections The outline structure of the document as described in Document Structure, forms the basis for defining sections of the exported document. However, since the outline structure is also used for (for example) lists of tasks, only the first three outline levels will be used as headings. Deeper levels will become itemized lists. You can change the location of this switch globally by setting the variable org-export-headline-levels, or on a per-file basis with a line #+OPTIONS: H:4 === end well, here's the entirety of my .org source file: === start #+LaTeX_CLASS: beamer #+MACRO: BEAMERMODE presentation #+MACRO: BEAMERTHEME Antibes #+MACRO: BEAMERCOLORTHEME lily #+MACRO: BEAMERSUBJECT RMRF #+MACRO: BEAMERINSTITUTE Opersys, Inc. #+TITLE: Linux Device Drivers #+AUTHOR: Karim Yaghmour, Robert P. J. Day #+OPTIONS: H:3 * Course structure and presentation ** About the instructors ** Course goals ** Presentation format ** Pre-requisites ** Day-by-day outline *** Day 1 stuff *** Day 2 more stuff *** Day 3 even more stuff === end yet when i generate the PDF, the Day 1 and Day 2 entries show up as list items, not (level 3) subsubsections. more confusingly, the user manual above seems to suggest that three levels is the default in the first place. is there something else i need to add to, say, my .emacs customization? i'm sure there's something trivially stupid i've done, but that section in the manual seems pretty clear that that's the only change i need to make, so if there's something else that has to be done, it should be mentioned there as well. rday -- Robert P. [O] [NEWBIE ALERT] can i *selectively* expand collapse sections/subsections of my .org file?
just diving into org-mode to write my first beamer presentation, and i have a simple question that i'm sure is answered in the manual somewhere but can i selectively expand and collapse sections or subsections of my .org file as i can with emacs' normal outline mode? i can see how SHIFT-TAB cycles through: * totally collapsed(?) * expanded to show section titles at all levels * fully expanded to show entire file i just want the equivalent of outline mode to pick any section and expand/collapse with, say, C-c C-s, but it seems clear that's not what i'd use here. help? rday -- Robert P. [O] suggestion for FAQ: clarifying how to upgrade org
i'm reading the FAQ, section about upgrading org, and it's not clear what one would do in the following situation. i'm running ubuntu 12.04 and in emacs running M-x org-version i get, version 6.33x. however, ubuntu has a separate org-mode package and, after installing that package via apt-get install and restarting emacs, i get version 7.8.02. that seems to work fine. if that's an acceptable way to upgrade org, that should probably be mentioned in the FAQ -- that you might just be able to do a standard, distro-specific install of whatever represents the org-mode package and emacs will pick it up automatically. just an observation. rday p.s. also curious about the advice here: http://orgmode.org/worg/org-faq.html#mixed-install in both cases above, when i asked for org-version, i didn't get any release info in parentheses. all i saw was: Org-mode version x.y.z which might confuse a reader expecting to see release information. again, just another observation.

Thanks! Very nice indeed. You say: The whole reason I like this mode is that it gives me the chance to expand and collapse sections while in emacs -- just go to any section/subsection and hit TAB to either expand or collapse it. That's the way I write manuals -- work in one place, finish up there, close it, move elsewhere, open it up, etc. I think that pretty soon, you will find a whole lot more reasons to like it ;-) i don't doubt it, i just absolutely need outline mode for anything i write these days, so i am delighted to have tripped over org-mode. this latex/beamer/emacs/org mode combination looks like the perfect solution for me. and now, to writing ... rday -- Robert P. [O] won't emacs kick into org mode for any file with a .org suffix?
currently working my way thru the manual and section 1.3, Activation, explains how to add a line to your .emacs file to guarantee that any .org file will open in org mode. but as far as i can tell, as long as org-mode is installed, that will happen, anyway, won't it? i've tested it with an empty .org file and i get org mode automatically. isn't it worth mentioning that? or am i misreading something? rday -- Robert P. That is really an Emacs that is half-a-decade old. i figured that -- my point was that i think it's worth mentioning that, with any decently current version of emacs, all of that is already configured and you don't need to do anything. reading that section doesn't make that clear. just my $0.02 (Cdn). rday -- Robert P.
