It looks to me that org-mode received around 873 votes which is pretty
good in my book. PortableApps.com, a heavily advertised commercial
product for Windows, could only muster 3880 votes. I am guessing that
the percentage of PortableApps.com users who voted for it is much
smaller than the percentage of org-mode users who voted for org-mode.

The PortableApps.com website claims that 100 million portable apps have
been downloaded which must mean that the number of users of
PortableApps.com is huge compared to the number of users of org-mode.
With no advertising, no money, and a much smaller user base, org-mode
outperformed PortableApps.com in the voting. Sounds like a victory to me.

Nice. Three tiny suggestions:

- have a conclusive slide?
- use a better font for tables, align tags
- upload it somewhere (like slideshare.net)

I admit the demo is rough. I had to quit working on it in order to do my

much work to change the font, so I'm not going to do that. Anyway, I

I didn't realize until you mentioned it that slideshare.net could take

One problem, which is a result of the way I made the demo, is the large
size of the pdf. I'm thinking about trying another method which should
decrease the file size dramatically. But that will have to wait for awhile.

Originally, I was going to make a video, but getting good resolution on

Re: [Orgmode] Sourceforge community award

2009-06-09 Thread srandby

Here are some ideas.

--

1. Complete this sentence in about 140 characters: Our project is
[-foo-]. For example, Our project is a tool that helps you wash your
car.

Our project is the best organizing tool that exists in this universe.

2. Complete this sentence, also in about 140 characters: We should win
because [-bar-]. For example, We should win because we have a strong
community and we solve a universal problem.

We should win because org-mode is transformative, innovative, and it is
supported and developed by an active and friendly community.

3. Please provide a logo (or screenshot, if you'd prefer) for your
project. It should be at least 640x480, but we'll also be showing it
as a thumbnail.

I agree that an svg of the unicorn is good.

4. This one is optional, but it could make a big difference. We'd like
to show our voters a video that introduces them to the core members of
your team. Send along the URL (on YouTube) and we'll make sure they
see it!

Perhaps one could collect nice photos of each of the major contributors
who agree to be part of the video. These photos could be shown
sequentially (with appropriate transitions between photos) in the video
while the sound track would describe who is in each photo. If adding
sound is too much trouble, one could describe each photo with text,
maybe even org-mode style text.

It shouldn't be too hard to make such a video. I bet ffmpeg would work
to make a nice ogg video that could be posted on the org-mode website.
I'm sure it would be easy to put it on YouTube also.

6. Our finalists are usually pretty interesting people. Are you
willing to be contacted by our public relations team about interviews
with the press?

[Orgmode] Drawers and HTML Export

I haven't tried it but this should help:

| Non-nil means, export with drawers like the property drawer.
| When t, all drawers are exported. This may also be a list of

`

Does it?

Setting org-export-with-drawers to t allows the draws to be exported,
but it also exports the drawer delimiters (the :DUCK: and the :END: in
my example) which I don't want to be exported. I've been looking at the
various export variables, but I can't find anything that will stop the
drawer delimiters from being exported. I think I'll stick with my
current set up which doesn't use drawers.

2009-05-15 Thread srandby
I received a request to tell the list how I managed to change the face
for lines that begin with # in an org file, so here it is.

Lines that begin with # are comment lines. The face of comment lines is
determined by font-lock-comment-face. In my .emacs, I now have:

'(font-lock-comment-face class color) (min-colors 88) (background
light)) (:foreground cornflowerblue

One may also do the following:

M-x customize
Go to the Faces group.
Go to the Font Lock group.
Go to the Font Lock Faces group.
Customize Font Lock Comment Face.

I'm sure there are other ways to do this as well.

[Orgmode] IDs

2009-04-22 Thread srandby
I saw some discussion on the list about custom IDs, but it confused me.
So, here is my problem.

I upgraded to 6.26. Now, when I export my index.org file to html, the
headlineline

* Courses

is exported to

div id=outline-container-2 class=outline-2
h2 id=nilCourses /h2
div class=outline-text-2 id=text-2

instead of

div id=outline-container-2 class=outline-2
h2 id=sec-2Courses /h2
div class=outline-text-2 id=text-2.

This happens for all other headlines in index.org too.

I don't want to define a custom ID for every headline, I want org-mode
to generate them automatically as it did in the past. For now, I've gone
back to 6.25b.

I see that 6.26d is out. I haven't tried it yet. Is this issue resolved
in 6.26d, or is the new way the default. If so, how do I make things
work the old way?

If you want external files, You likely will use the
same for a set of pages.

After pulling the latest version you can do this:

1. prepare any style files and script files you want to use

2. do this

(setq org-export-html-style-include-default nil)
(setq org-export-html-style-include-scripts nil)
(setq org-export-html-style
   link rel=stylesheet type=text/css href=gen-style.css
link rel=stylesheet type=text/css href=style.css
script type=text/javascript src=org-info.v.0.1.0.5.js/script
script type=text/javascript src=org-html.js/script
script type=text/javascript src=mystery.js/script)

Instead of the last setting, you can also use #+STYLE in a file
to specify the style files for this particular page.

Thanks, this helps a lot.

[Orgmode] HTML Export Issue

Org-6.09 (yes, I'm behind). At the top of an org file I export to html,
I have the -*- mode: org; -*- line even though I really don't need it.
When I exported to html using 6.09, this line was ignored. When I export

at the top of html page:

p-*- mode: org; -*-
/p

Being a minor annoyance, I could just delete the line in question, but I

Hi Matt,

Thanks. I think org-info.js is fantastic. During a semester, I make
daily updates to several parts of the site. Having the whole site
generated from one file makes it easy to do these updates. One update

org-mode. But, I am using org-mode extensively for my other work
related tasks. I have org files that keep track of my students' grades
and my web site is built from a single org file. As you pointed out in
your talk, org-mode allows one to work!

There was a post on this list from Russel Adams, that shows how to use
custom LaTeX headers. My setup is derived from that post, and enables
the usage of a commen LaTeX-header for Org export and the rest of my
LaTeX files:

.emacs:

(setq org-export-latex-classes (cons '(myarticle
 % BEGIN My Article Defaults
\\input{/home/sebastian/develop/lib/latex/header-pdf.tex}

 (\\rzchapteridx{%s} . \\rzchapteridx{%s})
 (\\rzsection{%s}{} . \\rzsection{%s})
 (\\rzsubsection{%s} . \\rzsubsection{%s})
 (\\rzsubsubsection{%s} . \\rzsubsubsection{%s}))
 org-export-latex-classes))

As you can see here, I include the common header file, and customize
the classes used for headlines on export. Since now the creation of
PDFs is now possible directly from Org-mode (C-c C-e p), this is the
easiest way to do it.

*.org:

#+LaTeX_CLASS: myarticle

Thanks for this information. I still have a long way to go before I can
use org-mode for LaTeX export.

First, I don't know emacs lisp. I've been planning to learn it, but
finding the time is difficult and I'm not a professional programmer.

Second, the customizations I use for LaTeX vary widely between files. My
understanding of your code, please correct me if I'm wrong, is that if I
have multiple header files for different types of documents, then I must
change my .emacs each time I want to change headers. This doesn't seem
to be very convenient to me. I suppose it is possible to write some code
to take care of multiple header files, but what if one has a brand new
header file?

Please understand that I haven't really explored the LaTeX export
features of org-mode very thoroughly. However, my impression is that the
LaTeX export capabilities of org-mode are somewhat limited at this time.
This isn't a bad thing. I don't think org-mode was designed to be a
replacement for something like AUCTeX. Anyway, org-mode is works well
for me for non-LaTeX tasks, so I'll continue to rely on it.

I have one suggestion that simplifies the processing of the LaTeX output
files. Install AUCTeX (http://www.gnu.org/software/auctex/). Then you
can stay in Emacs to do the processing. How? Open foo.tex in a buffer,
and type in C-c C-c latex to process the file. If you want to view the
PDF output, type C-c C-v. I sometimes wish that AUCTeX was included
in the Emacs distribution.

Re: [Orgmode] checkbox cookies

2008-08-20 Thread srandby
In case some are wondering, Jörg is referring to a message I sent to him
about updating org-mode in Carbon Emacs. I meant to send the message to
this list, but I failed to hit reply all when I sent it and I didn't
check its address before I sent it. Anyway, in case others are
interested, the message is below.

Hi Jörg,

I can't answer your question, but I've recently updated org-mode in
Carbon emacs. Here is what I did.

1. After decompressing org-6.06b.tar.gz, open the Makefile file, using
Emacs of course ;), in the org-6.06b folder.

2. You will see the following text

##--
## YOU MUST EDIT THE FOLLOWING LINES
##--

First, you must provide the name of your Emacs binary. Mine is:

# Name of your emacs binary
EMACS=/Applications/Emacs/22.2/Emacs.app/Contents/MacOS/Emacs

The /Applications/Emacs/22.2/ part is my quirky path to Emacs.app. From
what you've written, it appears that your path is straightforward as
follows:

# Name of your emacs binary
EMACS=/Applications/Emacs.app/Contents/MacOS/Emacs

Next, you must give the path to of Emacs.app. Mine is:

# Where local software is found
prefix=/Applications/Emacs/22.2

Yours should be:

# Where local software is found
prefix=/Applications

If you accidentally put a / at the end (as I did once), the
installation will fail.

Finally, put in the paths for the local lisp files and the info files as
follows:

# Where local lisp files go.
lispdir = $(prefix)/Emacs.app/Contents/Resources/lisp/textmodes

# Where info files go.
infodir = $(prefix)/Emacs.app/Contents/Resources/info

Don't forget to C-x C-s to save the changes.

3. Now, open a terminal and cd to the org-6.06b directory that contains
the Makefile you just edited. Run the following:

$ make
$ sudo make install
$ sudo make install-info

The installation is complete. To check this do M-x org-version in
Emacs. You may have to restart Emacs first.

Then you just have to press two keys with the left hand...

Here is something weird. When I move a subtree using M-S-up or
M-S-down, the content of the first section of the subtree becomes
centered.

* Subtree
** Section 1
Content 1
** Section 2

changes to

* Subtree

 Content 1
** Section 2
Content 2

It is as if M-s was used on the 'Content 1' line.

I find this annoying and inconvenient so I don't use these commands to
move subtrees. I haven't tested the other subtree moving commands.
Anyway, M-S-up/down requires me to press three keys at the same
time with my left hand, so not using those commands is no big deal.

It should be (obviously):

In the meantime you could solve that problem by adding these lines to

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Re: [Orgmode] Reveal Problem

2008-07-28 Thread srandby

Hi Carsten,

I understand and appreciate your point, but in my case there is no
danger of accidentally typing in invisible text. The reason I don't want
to display the next headline is that I wish to fold the headlined region
I'm working in and return everything to the state it was when I first
did the search. However, I've resolved the issue by placing a blank
headline between tagged headlines as follows:

* Grades
** Student 1
*** Exams :exams:
Exam scores
***
*** Homework :homework:
Homework scores

This way the blank headline is displayed instead of the tagged headline
and everything looks nice when I refold headlined regions. (I hope I'm
using correct terminology here.)

Many thanks for your help.

Carsten Dominik wrote:

Hi Scott,

this is supposed to be a *feature*. The problem is, if you show the
text below such a headline in a sparse tree, then the next heading is
still attached to the last line of the text made visible, and that
causes problems when editing. You can try this by going to one of those

headline revealed by the sparse tree command and typing

  M-s show-entry

Then the last line of the text made visible contains ellipses. Suppose
you now start editing this text, move the cursor directly before the 3
points and type a few characters. Strange things will happen and when
you later make the whole buffer visible with `C-c C-a' you wil see that
you typed somewhere in invisible text, but not where you intended to.

Therefore, when making the text under a headline visible, I also force
the next headline to be visibile so that editing is safe, assuming that
you are intending to edit that text.

Why does it bother you so much?

This is controlled be the variable `org-show-following-heading'. The
default in recent versions is nil, the fact that you do see these

[Orgmode] Re: Google Tech Talk

2008-07-23 Thread srandby
The talk was impressive, especially because it made me aware of the
org-mode web site and this mailing list. I've been using org-mode for
about 7 months after finding out about it through an article in Linux
Journal. I'm a mathematics professor and I use org-mode to keep track of
grades. I have things set up so that all I need to do is input scores
into a table and all calculations are done automatically. Very cool.
Every other system I've used for recording grades has either been a pain
to customize or required me to do hand calculations. Org-mode was the
solution to my grade recording problem.

I use org-mode for a few other tasks, but I'm still learning its
features. From the talk, I played around with the LaTeX preview feature,
but I don't think I'll use it much. The preview graphic was too small
for my bad eyes and I already have a relatively convenient system for
doing LaTeX work. However, I am intrigued by the publishing features of
org-mode when it comes to HTML. I use tables on my website because
certain unmentionable browsers don't work well with CSS unless one is
willing to maintain complicated code. I don't have time to maintain
complicated code for ridiculous browsers, so I still use tables. I
gather that org-mode will be enable me to simplify working with HTML
tables. I'll definitely look into this.

Emacs and org-mode are fantastic.
