 I use the ELPA built of orgmode.


 M-x customize-variable org-export-html-protect-char-alist RET

 gives an error.  I guess its custom type definition is illegal:

   :type '((repeat (cons (string :tag Character)
   (string :tag HTML equivalent

 Emacs  : GNU Emacs 23.2.1 (i486-pc-linux-gnu, X toolkit, Xaw3d scroll bars)
  of 2010-12-11 on raven, modified by Debian
 Package: Org-mode version 7.5
