Standards for Products Going into Petro Chemical Environments

2002-11-19 Thread Don_MacArthur

If I wanted to sell an electrical/electronic device (like a PLC) into a
Petro-checmical environment (pulp/paper mill, steel mill, etc.) what
standards would be applicable to ensure the product can withstand such a
harsh environment over a long period of time? This device would be
installed in a control room located inside of one of these environments
(i.e. not in the harshest spot of the factory, not the cleanest).

Obtaining Lab Accreditation

2002-04-18 Thread Don_MacArthur

Hello Group,

I have been tasked with obtaining A2LA accreditation for my internal (first
party) lab. We have about ten technicians, perform all standard suite of IEC
EMC tests along with vibration, shock, bump and environmental (cold, dry heat,
damp heat) testing.

I have attended ISO 17025 training but still have some questions. I'm wondering
if there is anyone out there who has experience with ISO 17025 of ISO Guide 25
lab accreditation who can answer these questions:

1. Roughly how long did it take you to obtain the accreditation start to
finish? I am thinking that it will take about one year.
2. Would you mind sharing the contents of your Quality Manual?
3. Is there a group or organization around that one could obtain example
Quality Manuals from?
4. What were some of the benefits and reasons for obtaining lab accreditation?
Was it worth while and why?

Thanks for your input.

Ghery,

Is it a absolute must to test? If you have reasonable justification that your
products are compliant (the new requirement is wimpy), why not just document
your reasoning and continue to sell product after the DOW?

Jason,

You are correct. All products placed on the market in the EU must be tested
to the latest standard once the magic date (DOW) for the new standard is
reached. Also, keep in mind that if a product specific standard is
published it takes precedence over the generic standard and the generic
standard no longer applies to the product family. For example, EN
55024:1998 is the product specific immunity standard for ITE, so EN
50082-1:1997 is not used for these products.

This is one more example of why I refer to the EMC Directive as The EMC
Professionals Employment Act of 1989.

Hi all.

EN 50082-1:1992 was replaced by EN 50082-1:1997. According to the
newapproach.org website, from 1/7/2001 the old version no longer allows one
to presume conformity to the EMC Directive.

Does this mean I need to retest all equipment to the new standard before I
can declare conformance?

My guess is YES.

Thanks in advance for any confirmation or correction.

Manufacturing Hipot Testing

2001-08-17 Thread Don_MacArthur

Dear Group:

A Hipot standard which we must run for CE compliance requires that
circuit-to-circuit and circuit-to-ground testing be performed on a routine
basis. The test is applied for 10s. The products I deal with have many
circuits (Inputs, outputs, etc.) so test time is excessive . To speed test time
the standard allows for grouping of similar circuits and decreasing the test
time to 1s (with increased voltage). There is a problem with the grouping
method because faults between circuits in the group are masked.

A better way of performing dielectric strength testing would be to automate a
process where each individual circuit is hipot tested to ground for 1 second.
The problem is that this method doesn't match what the CE standard requires.

Some of you have probably been in similar circumstances. What did you do? What
do you suggest? Do I meet the standard no matter the cost? What is the risk of
having my CE Mark pulled and perhaps my company sued if I do not meet the entire
standard?

Regards,
Don MacArthur

Philosophy for old designs with new requirements.

2000-06-19 Thread Don_MacArthur

I would appreciate some feedback on the following:

Let's say I have several existing designs which meet the requirements for CE
Marking today (EMC & Safety). What is the requirement for these existing
designs when a new standard comes out, let's say six months from now?

I think the older designs must be re-designed to meet the new requirements or
not be sold into the EU. Is this true? What ammunition is out there for me to
prove this fact to the higher-ups?
