Re: [PSES] EMC requirements for developer/evaluation boards
Read the statement at the very bottom of the linked web page. http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/intelligent-systems/evaluation-platforms/core-i7-4700eq-development-kit.html This is one approach that has been apparently successful. I believe Intel ships their eval boards all over the world. As it is sold, do you feel this type of product is really an Apparatus? It has no function as sold. Don't you have to incorporate it with other Components to make it work? Isn't it really a Component or sub-assembly incorporated with other Components or sub-assemblies to create a Prototype Apparatus not intended to be marketed? Can you classify it as a Component or Sub-Assembly which is NOT Intended for Incorporation into an Apparatus??? Referring to the Guide for the EMC Directive 2004/108/EC (8th February 2010), look at the Flow Charts starting on page 10; then go to Flow-Chart 2 on page 16. A Component or Sub-Assembly NOT Intended for Incorporation into an Apparatus would be Excluded from the EMC Directive. An Apparatus must also be intended for the End User. Though in this case, the End User would be an Engineer with knowledge of Electronics which would most likely include at least some knowledge of EMC. On page 17 of the guide where it describes what an End User is, see the text that says, Generally an end-user is deemed to have no qualifications in the field of electromagnetic compatibility. Products not intended for the End User is Excluded from the EMC Directive. In the scope of the EMC Directive, it says, When compliant with the provisions of the EMC Directive, equipment may be placed on the market and/ or put into service in the Community territory, freely moved and operated as designed and intended in the expected electromagnetic environment. So what is the expected electromagnetic environment for a product like this? It is intended to be used Temporarily in an engineering lab or Research and Development lab. What is the Expected EMC Environment of such an area where prototype electronic devices without any EMC testing is commonly operated for long periods of time? Though I cannot find any text that specifically excludes prototype electronic devices operating in an RD environment, it is kind of a no brainer. Hope this is somewhat helpful. Re: [PSES] New immunity testing by the FAA in the future?
All, I happened to have my iPad at work today and ran a scan to 1GHz with a video playing (didn't bring my charger though). There's a minimum of 20dB margin. However, the processor runs at 1GHz so I think data above 1GHz would be more interesting, but my chamber is tied up at the moment. Chris On 3/24/2012 1356, Derek Walton wrote: HI All, I've watched may people speculate about PED's and what they MAY do, so I decided to go in the lab and make some measurements on my new iPad. Obviously conducted is not an option, there's no power cord. For radiated emissions to 1 GHz, the device is as quiet as a mouse. It was only a quick look see, so I set it up as if I were reading a book: I have no movies loaded yet. Clearly there are other options, so if any one would like to chip in as to the way it should be running when tested let me know and I'll run when I get a second and post results. I'm thinking either playing a game with lots of video or a High resolution movie. Passive headset inserted also, cord unbundled. Anything else? Cheers, Derek. Re: [PSES] SpecAns with internal storage
I've been very happy in all respects with the X-series analyzer we got this summer from Agilent. It's a PC/Instrument combo, so there's plenty of space on the hard drive and we have access to network storage through the Ethernet port. http://www.home.agilent.com/agilent/product.jspx?nid=-33932.0.00lc=engcc=USpselect=SR.Looking Chris From: emc-p...@ieee.org [mailto:emc-p...@ieee.org] On Behalf Of Grasso, Charles Sent: Tuesday, November 22, 2011 12:10 PM To: emc-p...@ieee.org Subject: SpecAns with internal storage Does anyone know of a Spec An that has copious amounts of internal memory for capturing data? Anechoic Chamber: Pass-through vs. Bulkhead
EMC Gurus, We have a Space Saver chamber that we bought used and installed ourselves. When we installed it, we ran our antenna (signal) cabling through a pass-through along with our fiber optics. Today, someone mentioned that we ought to have at least our antenna cable connected through a bulkhead so that the cable shielding was terminated on the chamber. When we went to disassemble the chamber when we bought it, there were no bulkheads for anything. Are the bulkheads necessary? Does anyone else use a pass-through for the antenna cable? It doesn't seem to have had an effect on measurements, but I still have a lot to learn so hopefully someone can share some wisdom. DIY Equipment and Calibration
I'm aware of some people making their own CDN's and LISN's among other things and I have few questions about that. 1) Has anyone tried to build their own EM Injection clamp? If so, were you able to find a ferrite supplier that sold half-ring cores? 2) Is it acceptable to calibrate your own equipment? If so, how do accrediting bodies view this, and what documentation will they want to see? If not, does anyone have suggestions about where in the US I can send such homemade equipment for calibration (preferably Western US to save on shipping)?
