RE: Do not dial 9, 0, #, then hang up when requested.

2001-03-19 Thread Veit, Andy

It does look like the 9, 0, # threat it true, depending on what phone system
you have. Probably not worth getting into a row over, though.
Urban Legends can be easy to spot with a little sleuthing on good reference
sites:
http://urbanlegends.about.com/science/urbanlegends/library/weekly/aa021898.h
tm?rnk=r1&terms=AT%2526T+scam+hoax
http://netsquirrel.com/combatkit/phone.html

But even phone company sites list this one:
http://www.att.com/features/0398/90pound.html
http://www.worldcom.com/about_the_company/consumers_corner/90scam.phtml

For any computer-related virus, scam, or hoax info I always turn to
Symantec's site. It's their business to know:

Re: Do not dial 9, 0, #, then hang up when requested.

2001-03-19 Thread Ted . Eckert

This warning is basically a hoax. 90# has no affect on home telephones and
it only affects some older PBX systems. Full information can be found at:

http://hoaxbusters.ciac.org/HBInconsequential.shtml#90phone

If you receive E-mail that has some type of warning in it, check the
Hoaxbusters page before forwarding it to anybody. CIAC is part of the
Department of Energy and they provide on-call technical assistance to the
DOE and its associated agencies and labs. The CIAC is part of the Computer
Security Technology Center supporting Lawrence Livermore National
Laboratory.

There are too many hoaxes and urban legends out there already and there is
no need to clog up E-mail systems further.

It may sound like an Urban Legend, but it has a basis in fact. It only

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING WARNING FROM IRV LEVINSON:
I received a telephone call last evening from an individual
identifying himself as an 'AT&T Service Technician' who was conducting a
test on telephone lines. He stated that to complete the test I should
"touch nine(9), zero (0), pound (#), and then hang up." Luckily, I was
suspicious and refused.
Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by
pushing 90#, you give the requesting individual full access to your
telephone
line, which enables them to place long distance calls billed to your home
phone number.
I was further informed that this scam has been originating from
many local jails/prisons.
I have also verified this information with UCB Telecom, Pacific
Bell, MCI, Bell Atlantic and GTE. Please beware.
DO NOT press 9 0 # for ANYONE.
The GTE Security Department requested that I share this
information with EVERYONE I KNOW.
PLEASE pass this on to everyone YOU know. If you have
mailing lists and/or newsletters from organizations you are connected
with,
I encourage you to pass on this information to them, too.
After checking with Verizon, they said it was true so do not dial
nine (9), zero (0), pound (#) and hang up for anyone!
