I usually ask my customer what the specific standards are, and, if I never heard of documents, can they give me a copy. It gets really strange when my customer has to admit that they don't know either, and will get back to me after they ask THEIR customer. I like to think that it helps to build a better relationship with my customer if I admit right away that I don't know what the heck he's asking for.
