Re: Weight Limits for Lifting
Jim, Others have already pointed you at the relevant EC Directive, but the standard you need is: prEN1005-2 1993 Human physical performance -manual handling of objects associated to machinery. It is, apparently, still at draft stage, and I don't know what the cause of the delay is. However, it's got the sort of data you are looking for and it seems to be wholly consistent with the requirements contained in the UK's Manual Handling Regulations. Regards Nick. RE: RE: Weight Limits for Lifting
Link to useful pdf file from HSE on lifting - section 9 gives some recommendations for weights. PDF was too large to post. http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg143.pdf Alternatively send me a blank message with the text indg143 in the subject line and I'll forward a copy of the pdf. You want the EU's Health and Safety directive on "Manual Handling of Loads" 90/269/EEC. I used to be able to get the full English text downloaded from http://europa.eu.int/eur-lex/en/lif/dat/1990/en_390L0269.html Keith Armstrong Partner, Cherry Clough Consultants, www.cherryclough.com Cherry Clough House, Rochdale Road, Denshaw, OL3 5UE, Great Britain phone: +44 (0)1457 871 605, fax: +44 (0)1457 820 145 E-mail: keith.armstr...@cherryclough.com - Original Message - From: "Lyons, Jim" To: Sent: Tuesday, October 17, 2000 6:47 PM Subject: Weight Limits for Lifting > > Does anyone know if there are any EU requirements or directives that place a > maximum weight limit on products or packages that a person would be expected > to lift? > > Thanks for any info. > > Jim Lyons > > James W. RE: Weight Limits for Lifting
Jim In the UK there are - as far as I know - no specified regulatory limits but there are guidelines issued by the Health & Safety Executive - see http://www.open.gov.uk/hse/hsehome.htm Additionally, very similar recommendations are given in the UK Ministry of Defence standard DEF 00-25 Part 3 - which can be downloaded from http://www.dstan.mod.uk/ In both cases, the recommendations are based on a combination of the vertical height and horizontal distance(in relation to the body) from which the weight is being lifted, and whether the person is a man or a woman. In addition, DEF 00-25 Pt 3 also give maxiumum recommended carrying weights for fit "normal" men and women.
