RE: certification mark identification

2002-01-22 Thread Massey, Doug C.

Gary,
This is the symbol of compliance to the EX Directive, and applies to
products for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. On the same label you
will find an Ex rating, that goes something like this: EEx ia IIb T4. The
rating tells one what type of hazardous location the product is safe to use
in. A good place to start looking for info on the web is the IECEX home
page, at http://www.iecex.com/home.htm . The Safety Link also has some good
references to hazardous locations requirements.

The Ex symbol may also declare compliance to the newer ATEX Directive, which
will supercede the Ex Directive June 2003.

The 'EX' in both directives stands for 'explosive'.

I believe that the Ex mark is the "Epsilon X" Mark signifying compliance to
the new ATEX (from the French phrase "atmospheres explosible") Directive,
94/9/EC. It is used on products designed for use in explosive atmospheres.

It is associated with electrical equipment for explosive atmospheres in
Europe.

It is called for in both the old approach (76/117/EEC) and new approach
(94/9/EC) directives.

The Ex inside a hexagon refers to hazardous area equipment ( explosive
atmospheres).

The following website (no connection) may a good starting point.

RE: certification mark identification

2002-01-17 Thread Allen, John

Gary

That sounds like a certification mark for Hazardous/Flammable atmospherem
equipment - now covered by the ATEX Directive in Europe and similar
legislation and standards elsewhere (e.g in the US NEC).

It is always qualified by additional characters denoting the type of
protection incorporated, the surface temperatures etc., etc.

I would be very careful about helping someone to select a replacement if the
application is in a hazardous atmospheres location. Take advice from someone
who knows the requirements in the country/location where the equipment is to
be used.

If the location is not hazardous atmospheres, then the problem will probably
go away as the EX mark is irrelevant. So then apply the appropriate normal
engineering safety/certification criteria for selection of the replacement.
