Re: [Emc-users] EMC Fest

2008-05-11 Thread Greg Michalski
I'd second that - I can't justify time off from real income for what is for
now a hobby, if the proceeds from a sale of DVDs (even if just unedited off
the cuff stuff) went to the developement team as donations I'd step up.
Even setting up a cam and recording each of the sessions would be invaluable
to us who can't attend. I'd also be willing to offer my time to dupe
masters for said effort.

2008-05-11 Thread Patrick Ferrick
Hi all,

Unfortunately, giving final exams trumps EMC Fest for me this year, as it will
in forseeable years unless the dates change. Bummer.

I don't know about anyone else, but I would love (read: possibly even pay for!)
a dvd of someone just following Ray, John, Jon, Steve, or any of you other EMC
heavy hitters around the Fest. OK, that might not be the best way to put it (!)
- of course what I mean is that I would find it extremely cool to see what
other people's EMC'd hardware looks like, Mazak or desktop or anywhere in
between.

I guess what I'm getting at is that it wouldn't necessarily have to be
professionally edited to be valuable- so I hope somebody with a decent
camcorder would consider deagging it along and recording parts of the Fest.

thanks,
Pat

The limit switches yes but emc provides offsets after home.

I thought limit switches needed to be at extents, because you can't
run right through them. How do they have it set up? It would work
with an optical trip - something I've kind of wanted to set up with
something like this:

Optical should work if you can keep them clean.

http://www.robotobjects.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=407

I've seen used Boeing machines with a 1" aluminum plate drilled and
tapped in a 2" or 50 mm grid.
Lots of flexibility for mounting.

I recently made a tiny one of these for my mini mill, and confirm
that they're awesome:

Neat!

http://www.flickr.com/photos/garyfixler/sets/72157604574121304/

They're pretty easy to code for with nested O-code while loops, and
either a drilling, or helical boring routine. I used the latter,
with my own helical sub, which I later learned is nearly identical
to the one included in EMC's examples files :)

For 90% of what I do I use UL of my vise as G59.3 and clamp fixtures
in the vise. I simply draw my parts with a 0,0 UL corner.

I like this idea, especially as it's easy to square the mill back
up with my table. How do you account for the horizontal position in
the vise? Do your fixtures butt up against one side of it for
repeatability across the jaws? I think I'm going to steal this
concept.

I use a straight edge to align the jig with the left side of the
vise. My shortest tool is H1 and touch off the top
of the workpiece for Z zero. All other tool lengths are referenced to
H1.

I keep thinking about making a tool length gage mounted on the table
with a piston and a prox switch. It should be a very fast and
accurate way of setting length. So far the round-to-it has eluded me.

I think this doesn't even have to be mounted. It could simply be a
little device you place on the table whenever needed, though it
wouldn't be quite as fast as a prox switch. I just found this while
poking around the net:

http://www.industrialhobbies.com/howto/production_notes/
height_gauge/height_gauge_pt1.htm

That looks simple enough. You could also rig one of those optical
switches.

I envision something where the gage is rigged as a probe and the
lengths go into a table to be transformed for

the tool table.

I've looked at the tool gages with the 2" offset but have not gotten
one.

I'll just need a parallel block, a height gauge, a little block for
the gauge tip, and some epoxy.

2008-05-11 Thread Ray Henry

Hi Gary

The limits are at the end of travel. As are the home switches. On most
commercial machines like this there are 2-3 or 4 switches on each end of
travel. What we do is home to the switches at one end and then offset
to the center of the table. This offset is set in the ini file as a
distance from the actual switch and index pulse to where the integrator
wants home to be. It is seen by everything in the control as the real
home. So even if you command a g53 x0y0z0 it will find the center of
the table rather than the switches.

Re: [Emc-users] European EMC event & users

2008-05-11 Thread jros
If it is needed, I would not mind to host such a event at the Public
University of Navarra (Spain).

http://maps.google.es/maps?f=q&hl=es&geocode=&q=Zaandam&sll=40.396764,-3.713379&sspn=10.353023,17.270508&ie=UTF8&ll=42.798439,-1.635568&spn=0.009746,0.016866&t=h&z=16

We have some labs, so we can work with real stuff. We can also play with
our own stuff if some one wants

http://www.imac.unavarra.es/parallel

To fly to Pamplona usually you have to go to Barcelona, or Madrid and
then take a flight to Pamplona. A different option is to go to Bilbao or
Biarritz or Zaragoza and take a bus or train to Pamplona.

This may be an inconvenient.

Although I'm using EMC2 I don't consider me an expert. This can be
another inconvenient :)

I thought limit switches needed to be at extents, because you can't run
right through them. How do they have it set up? It would work with an
optical trip - something I've kind of wanted to set up with something like
this:

http://www.robotobjects.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=407

I've seen used Boeing machines with a 1" aluminum plate drilled and

I recently made a tiny one of these for my mini mill, and confirm that
they're awesome:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/garyfixler/sets/72157604574121304/

They're pretty easy to code for with nested O-code while loops, and either a
drilling, or helical boring routine. I used the latter, with my own helical
sub, which I later learned is nearly identical to the one included in EMC's
examples files :)

For 90% of what I do I use UL of my vise as G59.3 and clamp fixtures
> in the vise. I simply draw my parts with a 0,0 UL corner.

I like this idea, especially as it's easy to square the mill back up with my
table. How do you account for the horizontal position in the vise? Do your
fixtures butt up against one side of it for repeatability across the jaws? I
think I'm going to steal this concept.

I keep thinking about making a tool length gage mounted on the table
> with a piston and a prox switch. It should be a very fast and

I think this doesn't even have to be mounted. It could simply be a little
device you place on the table whenever needed, though it wouldn't be quite
as fast as a prox switch. I just found this while poking around the net:

http://www.industrialhobbies.com/howto/production_notes/height_gauge/height_gauge_pt1.htm

I'll just need a parallel block, a height gauge, a little block for the
gauge tip, and some epoxy.

Ok friends, this will be a great chance to make a European EMC workshop!

I'm willing to work further with a gathering and can take the responsibility
to manage the arrangement.
If you have any ideas or want to join me, don't hesitate to send a mail!

I'll go further with this during the upcoming weeks. :)
