[Emc-users] [OT] automatic chucks

2009-03-12 Thread Roland Jollivet
Hi All

Has anyone come up with, or seen, a novel way to make an automatic lathe
chuck?

These devices, hydraulic or pneumatic, are eye wateringly expensive. Getting
something in and out of the chuck is one of the main sticking points in a
small scale automation lathe.

While one could often get away with two fixed jaws and the third activated,
it still requires a lot of fiddling between jobs.

Collet draw-in chucks are too limited in their scope.

Possibly the easiest way is to have a motor with reduction drive mounted on
the carrige at centre height, and perpendicular to the Z. The drive shaft
is ended with a square. The chuck would rotate into position, and the drive
shaft motioned into place and the chuck opened and closed much as one would
do manually.
This way, you could;
- tighten each jaw if you wanted to
- control the clamping force
- open/close the chuck over it's full range without having to adjust jaws
between jobs
- still allow manual operation

Any ideas?

Regards
Roland

PS, the load/unload robot is a seperate issue;)

 Hello, all,

I will be demo-ing EMC2 at the NAMES show in April. I wanted
to have some contouring program to show the fast EMC2 block
 processing rate.
Does anyone have anything interesting that I could maybe cut
out of wax that has a lot of short vectors? The machine will
be a 150 Lb minimill, so it has a 4 limit in the Y axis.

I could probably code up something that writes G-code to
carve a hemisphere or something like that, but if somebody
has a more interesting surface that might be good. I need to
re-scale the penguin and try that, too.

Re: [Emc-users] How can I get emc toautomatically run g-code without an operator?

2009-03-12 Thread Michael Dubno
I finally got it working! Thanks Eric.

Emcrsh is really quite neat. A couple of observations though -
1. I checked the source code for emcrsh and it hard codes the relative
path ../../nc_files. I think this doesn't make sense since it
precludes absolute paths and creates confusion by implementing relative
paths and hardcoded directories. I would either leave the path off or
allow it to be a parameter to emcrsh. Also the path is different from
the path specified in the .hal file.
2. When a file is finally opened the telnet session gets an ACK but the
Axis screen doesn't refresh. The filename on the title bar changes but
the code and the image in the path window doesn't update. This certainly
doesn't give you the warm fuzzy feeling that the right thing is going to
happen when you hit run!
3. Perhaps it is because my print out of the help text split
task_plan_init onto two pages but I wouldn't have guessed that I needed
to set task_plan_init before opening a file. I think this may have been
the reason that my previous attempts at moving nc_files around and
trying to open my test didn't work. Since I'm not sure how you can open
a file without calling task_plan_init maybe open should call it
automatically.
4. Occasionally when emc initializes it doesn't allow connections
through port 5007. I'm not sure how to reproduce this but it happens
about 1 in 5 times.

Thanks again for everything - Mike

Michael,

Sorry, I was responding from memory and gave you the wrong path. It is
relative to the nc_files folder ($HOME/emc2/nc_files by default). At any
rate do the following:

In your hal file add the line:
loadusr emcrsh
IOW, with no parameters. To get it going we will use all of the
defaults.

For testing purposes you can use the sim tkemc configuration. Just add
the
above to core_sim.hal in the configs/sim folder.

Then telnet in and issue the following commands:

hello EMC client 1.0
set echo off
set verbose on
set enable EMCTOO
set task_plan_init
set mode auto
set open examples/3D_Chips.ngc

This should load the 3D_Chips.ngc example program.

I turned verbose on so that you get more informative error messages. The
remainder is the sequence I use when loading a new program.

Regards,
Eric

Eric,
Thanks for the response but I still can't convince the set open
test.ngc
command to work. I've moved the nc_files directory all over the machine
to
no avail. The relative directory error message, of course, is less than
helpful. I think the trick will be to get the -ini method working. If I
could explicitly specify the path then debugging would be easier. Has
anyone gotten the set open method working on Ubuntu? If so, please
shed
some light.

Rafael,
I think your points are valid but they don't simply apply to linux
novices.
Relative paths without a well documented root are difficult to work with
and
confusing even to folks like me with 30 years of software experience!

That is to be expected. emcrsh and Axis are independent applications and
know nothing about each other. The only common factor is that they are
both talking to the same realtime code. If you load a file in Axis then
load a different one in emcrsh then press run in Axis, the last file
loaded will be the one that runs, though Axis will display the original
file.

Do you actually need Axis? Emcrsh will run quite happily on it's own.

I've had this occasionally, especially if I have managed to kill emcrsh

project is on hold for the time being. Too many other things to do :-(

Re: [Emc-users] How can I get emc toautomatically run g-code without an operator?

2009-03-12 Thread Michael Dubno
Leslie, all good points.

The issue with number 2 is that it partially works. The title bar
changes the name of the script but nothing else refreshes. This seems to
me to be more of a bug since Axis knows the script changed and, in fact,
knows the name of the new script.

I won't need Axis once the machine is fully boxed up and stuck in a
coffee table and runs headless. For debugging and moving things around
Axis has been fantastic.

In terms of connection problems I'm hoping this doesn't become a problem
when the machine goes headless.

Too many things to do is a blessing (until I need help getting the
program working!)

Also, I've been writing quite a bit of python code to do all sorts of
fun things -
Control the table using a web interface
Command line arguments for truetype-tracer (with special sorting
for non-z-axis machines)
Chain class that works with chains of points (polylines) that
converts to g-code
Pattern classes - spiral, sun, maze, text, lissajous,
spirograph, fractals all optimized for non-z-axis machines

Thanks - Mike

Re: [Emc-users] How can I get emc to automatically run g-code without an operator?

2009-03-12 Thread Eric H. Johnson
Michael,

A quick preface before addressing your individual points. Emcrsh basically
just ported the functionality of emcsh to a telnet type interface. IOW, the
tk/tcl interface was replaced by a socket interface. So in most cases the
reason it does what it does and separates the commands out the way that it
does is because that was the way it was done in emcsh.

I finally got it working! Thanks Eric.
Emcrsh is really quite neat.

Great, that interface had two primary objectives.
1 Make the simplest possible network interface
2 Use a standard protocol independent of the particular version of EMC
running.

A couple of observations though - 1. I checked the source code for emcrsh
and it hard codes the relative path ../../nc_files. I think this doesn't
make sense since it precludes absolute paths and creates confusion by
implementing relative paths and hardcoded directories. I would either leave
the path off or allow it to be a parameter to emcrsh. Also the path is
different from the path specified in the .hal file.

I don't remember if I added that, or if that was how it was done in emcsh at
the time I ported the code. I can add a command line parameter to allow
specifying the path to use for the g-code files.

 2. When a file is finally opened the telnet session gets an ACK but the
Axis screen doesn't refresh. The filename on the title bar changes but the
code and the image in the path window doesn't update. This certainly doesn't
give you the warm fuzzy feeling that the right thing is going to happen when
you hit run!

As Les already pointed out, they are separate entities and can at times
compete with each other. Another thing you will find is that operator and
error messages will get snagged by the first one in and missed by the other
application. Usually Axis will get it first because it typically has a
faster update rate.

That was among the reasons I suggested using TkEMC to get it going. TkEMC
and emcrsh use fundamentally the same interface, and in fact share some
common code (shcom.cc), so they get along much better.

 3. Perhaps it is because my print out of the help text split
task_plan_init onto two pages but I wouldn't have guessed that I needed to

I had completely forgotten about that until I dumped a log file to see the

not mean that we can't change it.

 4. Occasionally when emc initializes it doesn't allow connections through

I have seen that too, but have not been ablt to isolate the cause. Whether
it is in the shutdown code of emcrsh or something about how EMC shuts down
in general.

Re: [Emc-users] How can I get emc to automatically run g-codewithout an operator?

2009-03-12 Thread Michael Dubno
The history of the code is quite helpful and explains a lot. Just to be
clear, I'm not complaining! Because of all of the fine work on emc I now
have a fully functional machine and it took very little effort to get
there. I was the CTO at a very large corporation for many years so I
have a nasty habit of trying to make any software (and hardware) I touch
better if possible.

A command line argument to emcrsh would be very helpful and so would
finding the port shutdown/initialization bug. The directory issue is
easy to work around by using symbolic links. The port issue may prove
much harder.

The other issues are relatively minor and now that I understand them
they don't interfere at all. They may eventually affect other people
though and should be kept in mind.

I'm very thankful for all of your help and I really think this is one of
the coolest examples of open source out there.

[Emc-users] EMC at NAMES, Apr 18-19

2009-03-12 Thread Dale Grover
Booth 15 at NAMES will be ours for
demonstrating/promoting/distributing EMC. This is in the back, with
Jon Elson and Steve Stallings in nearby booths to the sides.

For better or worse, the person I spoke to at NAMES felt vender
status was appropriate (due to distribution of software, even if
given out free); it sounds like something to work on changing for
next year (Ron Ginger's connections would be valuable). For this
year, consider it my donation to one of the coolest examples of open
source out there (as a recent post put it).

Please let me know if you would like to take a shift or two in the
booth; create a handout, banner, or sign; demo a system with EMC; or
have other thoughts about how to promote EMC.

Of course, many other exhibitors and venders will be running EMC
systems elsewhere. This is a chance to place the emphasis on EMC
itself.

Right now there will be at least an Emco F1 mill, and hopefully at
least one other PC running Axis for off-line demos. Steve Stallings
will loan one or two PMDX-112 boards for illustrating configuration.
There will be room for more machines, and more knowledgeable people
(in both senses).

It seems like distributing actual Live CDs would be a Good Thing--any
idea how many we could give away? Would burn-on-demand meet the
demand? Would any purpose be served making fancy CDs with printing?
Seems like folks would be fine with a CD with no printing (just
envelope printed or stamped).

NAMES is April 18-19, Toledo, OH.

--Dale

Would anyone have an objection to there being a table at NAMES to
demo/publicize EMC? (Not necessarily an official EMC thing, but
just folks who are interested in sharing.) There are at least two
vender tables left as of this morning.

--Dale
(Yes, I'm volunteering to help coordinate such a thing, if there are
no objections.)

Dale Grover wrote:

such as a table?

Steve Stallings of PMDX said he'd be there, and I'm also planning on
going. Tha's not very official, but may be as good as it is going to get.

I am happy to see EMC will be represented, but it seems very unfair you
should pay as an exhibitor. I have exhibited my CNC stuff, and given a
seminar there for many years. I was asked by one of the committee guys
to do everything I could to encourage more CNC demos. I put notes here
and on other lists to do that.

It has always been clear that Vendors that sell products should pay for
tables, this is appropriate and necessary for NAMES to operate. But guys
that demo their hobby stuff are exhibitors. They do have to pay the $10
to get in as does everyone, but they are not vendors.

I have written to my contact and suggested this was not the way to build
CNC demo interest. I will see what the response is.

NAMES is run by a committee, and that has all the usual implications of
a committee. Im sure many recall a few years ago when the committee was
most uncooperative to our CNC demos. I have been assured that they all
now realize that was a big mistake and they really want to encourage
more CNC demos.

In the end, NAMES is a great show, I would never miss it. I enjoy
showing off my work and seeing what everyone else is doing. Ill be
there, with a new router Im building (if I get it done :-) and hope to
see lots of other CNC stuff. And we can debate the merits of our
favorite software all weekend!

I have really enjoyed the CNC talks and demos that Ron and others
have given at NAMES. They add tremendously to the show. (I always
take notes at Ron's talks.) And anything NAMES can do to increase
the CNC content would make me even happier.

Please bear in mind that when booking this booth, I didn't press the
issue about vender/exhibitor--at this point it matters more to me
that EMC has a nice space and location, both true of this booth, I
believe. I'm not offended, and could see the point of view that EMC
does seem like a product, even if nothing is being sold. And I do
see the booth as more than a demo--I think it really does want to be
venderish in appearance and purpose. (One of many bad ideas I've
had already--a sign with SHOW SPECIAL--70% OFF!! for the booth.)

But I do think that, if in the future there is sufficient interest to
have another EMC-specific booth/table/area, it is worth going to the
NAMES committee much earlier in the year and exploring other
arrangements, because EMC is a special kind of product (plus
community). This kind of exhibit should (I hope!) add to the show,
isn't making anyone any money, and builds the kind of community that
NAMES benefits from. Definitely worth giving space to, gratis.
Let's see what we can actually make happen this year.

Looking forward to the show!

I remember seeing somewhere on the web that the best way to create a true bas
relief
from a grayscale to g-code program is to paint the object in question white and
then submerge the object into water that is slightly dyed.
You then photograph the item from above.

With a little tweaking in your favorite photo program, the resulting image will
then give
you a better correspondence of height to greyscale.

I have not yet tried this but I am anxious to give it a go.
