Re: [Emc-users] G43 and G54 Lathe

2011-10-20 Thread John Thornton
What I did with 2.4.x is
1 G55 to select a coordinate system with no offsets
2 In the MDI window T1 M6 G43 to load my tool
3 using a dowel I move the tool to the spindle nose and slowly move away
till the dowel just passes under then checking that the Z axis is
selected I touch off the tool table and leave it at 0.0

... repeat 2 and 3 for all tools

G54 to select coordinate system 1
using the same dowel method I set one of the tools (usually T1 a
turning/facing tool) to the work piece face and touch off G54 and enter
0.375 (the diameter of my favorite dowel that I keep handy by the lathe)

now all my tools Z0 are the same... for a parting tool when I touch off
you have to enter -the width of the cutter, for threading tool shapes
just do the math to figure out where the center of the point is when you
touch off the tool table.

My lathe has a turrent so I made 8 pyvcp buttons one for each tool and
now I just press the button to load a tool...

If you have not looked at ngcgui you need to... it is on the forum in
the subroutines section. I use it for 99% of the ops I do on the lathe
as it is so fast and predictable. I can set up an op to face set Z0 to
the new face, turn od, drill, bore id, and part off in a minute or
less... do that by hand.

Did I mention that I love using ngcgui?

I am confused on how G43 works with G54 for a lathe. I set all my tools on
the Z axis to the spindle nose (G54 Z is set at machine 0 or variable 5223
is 0) Then I take tool 1 and place it at the end of the part and touch off
the Z axis G54 at 0. This sets my variable 5223 to lets say 1. From what I
though, That 1 would then be added to all my tool offsets to give me that
actual zero. So far everything is working and I make a part.

Then I add another tool and touch of the end of the tool to the spindle nose
and my Z for that tool is incorrect? It is located very similiar to the
other tools in location of Z, however the number in the tool offset is very
different and it does not go to the correct location

If there is something for G54 in the Z axis, does this effect the tool
offset G43 when setting it? Am I wrong in thinking that G43 should be from
 machine 0?

The sequence I take when setting the tool is:
 in MDI I type
 T7 M6
 G43
 Then set the tool

Should I not do the G43 when setting the tool to the end of the spindle
 nose?

 Thanks
 Brian

I am confused on G43 and G54 for a lathe.

Me too, but mainly because I keep touching-off into T rather than
G54 and vice-versa by mistake.

From what I

Yes, that is right so far.

Then I add another tool and touch of the end of the tool to the spindle nose
and my Z for that tool is incorrect?  It is located very similiar to the
other tools in location of Z, however the number in the tool offset is very
different and it does not go to the correct location

The spindle nose is no longer 0 in G54, you moved it to the end of the
work when you touched-off the Z in G54 above.
If you are adding a new tool then you need to touch it off using T
to make it agree with all the other tools.

When you touch off the new tool into G54 (with, initially, 0 in the
tool offsets) to the spindle nose you are saying the spindle nose is
now zero in G54, for all zero-length tools. This then makes all tools
differ from the new tool in their G54 zero position by how much that
new tool isn't actually zero length. (this will basically mess up your
G54 until you put in an accurately measured tool, and G54 touch-off
again)
If you touch off the new tool into the tool table (with T) to the
spindle nose, but with G54 still set to the end of the workpiece, you
are saying this tool is so anti-long that with the saddle in the
current position, the tool tip is at the end of that workpiece over
there and you will end up with a bad tool length offset.

If you want to always touch-off new tools to the spindle, you can
designate one of your other coordinate systems to always be the
spindle nose, (G59.3 for example), and select that before touching-off
new tools. (always using T)

[Emc-users] CAM program

2011-10-20 Thread Chris Reynolds
I've been looking at making a complete switch to linux and I wanted to get some
input from the group. I've been using EMC to run my milling machine for a
couple of years now and I'd like to also start doing all of my cad design as
well as generating my machine code. Currently on my windows machine I use
Rhino3d for my 3d design work and AutoCAD and Rhino3d for my 2d, then for 2d
code creation and manipulation I've been using NCPlot, for 3d code creation I'm
using MeshCAM. I'm curious what packages would be recommended for these
different applications. I've downloaded and installed QCad and FreeCAD to try
out for the design side of things, but it's a program for creating the machine
code that I'm needing. Could really use some suggestions from other users.

OK, I know this one, as I have run into it myself!  What is happening is the
T1 M6 is requesting a tool change.  If you had an ATC, it would execute some
procedure to change the tool and then inform EMC that the change was
completed.
There is a hal pin commanding the change that needs to be linked to a
hal pin
signaling
the change is complete, if you have no ATC mechanism.

There is a better way to do this, but it involves adding another hal
component
to your configs files.
See http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?Tool_Changes

OK, I know this one, as I have run into it myself!  What is happening is the
T1 M6 is requesting a tool change.  If you had an ATC, it would execute some
procedure to change the tool and then inform EMC that the change was
completed.
There is a hal pin commanding the change that needs to be linked to a
hal pin
signaling
the change is complete, if you have no ATC mechanism.

There is a better way to do this, but it involves adding another hal
component
to your configs files.
See http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?Tool_Changes
for some more info on this.

[Emc-users] need help with external control of cnc machine

2011-10-20 Thread Lapoe Lynn
hi,

i'm new to cnc, and i'm hoping to get some help from the experts here on a
project i am working on.

i am interested in using a simple benchtop cnc-type milling machine for some
automated testing. one key criterion for me is the ability to control the
cnc machine from a 3rd party software (matlab) running on a windows PC. (i'm
grafting this into an existing set of tests)
i don't need very sophisticated control - mostly simple x-y-z position
commands. however, i _must_ be able to issue the commands from software
_outside_ of the GUI that most of these machines seem to come with. (eg.
command line or dll calls for example). after checking a bunch of PC based
solutions, i haven't really found anything that works.

someone from the cnczone message boards suggested using emcrsh to control a
linux box running emc2 to control a cheap cnc router (eg. CNC-6040 or
similar).

can anyone tell me if this setup would work, and if so, how difficult would
it be to set up?

would it potentially be as simple as a set of g-code files (one for each
test), and use telnet on the windows PC to issue an emcrsh to call emc2
instructing it to run each file in turn? can emcrsh be used to simply run
emc2 with a specified filename?

really appreciate any help y'all can provide -- i'm completely new to cnc,
so there is a big learning curve, and i'm under a lot of time pressure to
get this up and running asap!

thanks in advance for your help!

Yes, emcrsh will do what you need. It's not file-based, it's line-based (with
some setup), but otherwise you're right on.

 Subject: [Emc-users] CAM program

I've been looking at making a complete switch to linux and I wanted to get
some input from the group. I've been using EMC to run my milling machine for
a couple of years now and I'd like to also start doing all of my cad design
as well as generating my machine code. Currently on my windows machine I use
Rhino3d for my 3d design work and AutoCAD and Rhino3d for my 2d, then for 2d
code creation and manipulation I've been using NCPlot, for 3d code creation
I'm using MeshCAM. I'm curious what packages would be recommended for these
different applications. I've downloaded and installed QCad and FreeCAD to try
out for the design side of things, but it's a program for creating the
machine code that I'm needing. Could really use some suggestions from other
 users.

i'm new to cnc, and i'm hoping to get some help from the experts here on a
 project i am working on.

i am interested in using a simple benchtop cnc-type milling machine for some
automated testing. one key criterion for me is the ability to control the
cnc machine from a 3rd party software (matlab) running on a windows PC. (i'm
grafting this into an existing set of tests)
i don't need very sophisticated control - mostly simple x-y-z position
commands. however, i _must_ be able to issue the commands from software

(without the r) won't work.

I'm pretty sure that this has been done before...

Here it is:

You might want to send an email to FlyingElectron and see what he ended

Yes, emcrsh will do what you need. It's not file-based, it's line-based

Re: [Emc-users] plea for help tuning a servo system in Ann Arbor area

2011-10-20 Thread Jim Coleman
At my employer, cutting with a 200A plasma torch running liquid oxygen, we
don't cut faster than 160 IPM or so. This is cutting mild steel from .060
to 1. I'm usually the shear / brake press guy, but I've ran the burn table
a number of times. I've wondered if our cutting rates are ideal, but
they've been using them for years now. Not sure if this'll be useful or
not, these are the people who run the bandsaw at arount 330 IPM surface
speed and run the drill press at it's highest speed(900 RPM) for every size
drill they use. And I don't know what I'm talkin about when I suggest
different. Guess this turned into a bit of a vent. Sorry about that.

We are mainly going to be using a plasma torch so may be cutting at
200-1000 ipm (will be based on material and I haven't researched actual
rates - but should obviously). We would like rapids to be as fast as
reasonable, and this was part of the reason for selecting servos at all and
those motors specifically. With the current setup we will probably have
 rapids at 2500 ipm.

I don't run the very latest EMC on my production machine, and there has

have anything to do with my servo interface.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I was hoping to stay in the open source
realm, rather than go the commercial route. I guess I could try something like
wine to run the windows app in linux and see if that will work, but in my past
experience it didn't usually work very well.
