Greetings;

The function generator arrived today, so I have the potential PSU, one 
2M542 driver, and an A.T. KL23H266-20-8B motor setup to test how is the 
best way to run it.

The first thing I notice is that its maximum current draw, when the driver 
is set for a hair under 2 amps, is actually at about 350 rpm.  I think my 
Greenlee digital amprobe fades below that frequency, and I have no clue 
what its response when the excitation frequency is well above 60hz.

Anyway, with 46 volts available, with this 8 wire  motor wired for series 
as a 4 wire, nominally 1.81 amps of drive according the the dip switch 
chart on the driver, and the rpm divisor set at 6400/rev, I can drive it 
to somewhat above 300Khz giving a hair over 2812 rpm.  But the inductance 
sure seems to be crippling it as it is only drawing about .43 amps at that 
speed. So I may go back out and see how it runs wired in parallel.

I also note that the opto's in the driver are about done at 750Khz when 
its set for a 25600 per rev divisor.  The motor stops and doesn't even 
squeek when its sitting there stalled.  Its just locked up as if the drive 
failed.

But I haven't tried it as a paralleled coil drive yet.

But I'd sure like to find an AT chart showing this motors nominal 
performance.  I struck out at www.automationtechnology.com, getting the 
impression I was not even on the right companies site.

Has anyone a better URL?

I did find that, but this one is marked as a 266, not 286.  And my drivers 
can do 4.2 amps, however that would equal fried motor in short order at 
the lower rpms used for working speeds.  I tried it once at 3.3, and took 
a room temp motor to way too hot to touch without a potholder in about 5 
minutes.

You are of course right, while I can get 3500+ revs out of it, that 2.3 
amps, or 2.8 amps, is in no danger of overheating the motor as its only 
showing around .7 amps at that speed, wa too much inductance.  IOW 
turning up the current only works at speeds where the current regulation 
in the driver works, and its fading away already below 500 rpm.  To really 
use it at insane speeds would take a driver rated at 300+ volts. But I 
have an investment in the 2M542's by the 8 pack, so they will have to do.  
Leadshine has others, but I think they quit at 80 volts  under 10 amps.  
And their site is broken tonight, main page is ok, but clicking on 
anything stepper gets a page not found.

Looks like Wantai has an 80 volter at 5.6 amps CCS for about a $70 bill.  
On fleabay of course.  No experience with it.  For me, the 2m542 has been 
bulletproof.  The limits I found yesterday are more related to the speed 
of the opto's in it than anything else, they simply aren't up to it when 
the PRR gets above 350 kilohertz.  And thats 2x faster than the specs...

 I have one of these - they are the biggest
 motor the 3.0A and under drivers can push but the 6.8mH is a real
 downside on performance. Running serial drives that number into the
 insane range at about 27mH, so parallel is definitely the way to go
 when you have a driver that can run at 2.8A without overheating.

[Emc-users] Possibly dumb question - 7i76 encoder for spindle speed feedback

Hi all;

I'm back working on my mill with spindle tachometer, to utilize Andy Pugh's
automatic spindle speed selector example code.

I have, from the spindle sensor, input going to a 6N138 optoisolator's
input. Ground and voltage source tied to machine. It sources enough current
to drive the input quite well. (originally sent to the input of an Amtel
processor in the LED spindle speed display)

Output of 6N138, with +5v, ground, to the 7i76 ENCA+ and surrounding
connectors on the 7i76.

Looking with Halscope gives me a pretty good signal on
hm2_5i25.0.encoder.00.input-a. Running at 1,000 rpm gives me 14 square
teeth, running at 500 rpm gives me 7, and running at 300rpm gives me 4.
(not that the counts mean much, except that the reading tracks spindle
speed linearly)

The 7i76 jumper is set for TTL input. ONLY the ENCA+ input pin has anything
connected, the IDX, ENCB+/- and ENCA- are all left floating.

The issue I have is that the velocity never seems to do much other than
just futz around between 6 and 40, no matter what the spindle speed.

Here's my ini code:

If the inputs are jumpered for TTL levels you must leave the -inputs 
unconnected. The + inputs have 2K pullups to 5V so will be in a high state if 
left open. I forget the 7I76 encoder polarity but you may need to ground the
ENCB+ input to get the count direction correct (ENCB is the direction input in
count = COUNT/DIR mode )
