My guess is that it's a joint issue on the power side. Thermal cycling
causes the solder joints on power devices to eventually break contact. Once
the board warms up, contact is made again. (or vice versa)

As a start. I would open the drive and re-solder all the power devices, and
power connectors. I've done this often in the past that's saved a device.
(be careful to let the HV caps discharge over a few hours before opening.
There is normally a bleed resistor)

If there was a fault in the signal side, it wouldn't 'recover' as it did.

2022-05-09 Thread andrew beck
The China option costs 200 bucks and just works too. Though yaskawa is
great!

Actually for anyone that's interested I get all my servo motors and vfds
from a company in China yuhai. (Yaskawa copy)

I have been dealing with Bill their sales man for 5 years and must have
bought about 30 servo motor sets now. Plus sent lots of people his way.

They have never let me don't yet.

I trust him enough now to just let him go for it and he gets me anything I
want. Powersupplies cable etc.

23 bit absolute encoders cost a extra 24usd lol. You can output
incremental pulses to Linuxcnc and send like 10ppr which makes for a
very tight servo loop.

And like you can get inductive encoders that can handle 24000rpm to.

Anyway with all the China lockdowns atm I'm thinking that option may run
out soon so time to stock up.

 Todd,
Yaskawa drives just don't brake. If I remember correctly, the V1000 has been
around for quite some time.

[Emc-users] Linuxcnc development machine

2022-05-09 Thread Alan Condit
I just rebuilt my late 2012 MacMini to be a Debian Bullseye machine. I setup a
development environment on it. I loaded it with the source for Preempt-RT
5.15.41 and built a 64 bit kernel for my RaspberryPi 4.

The only problem that I am having is that if I am not using it for a few
minutes it shuts down. Several other Bullseye users have reported similar
behavior. So, I’m wondering if I should go back to Buster?

Thanks,

[Emc-users] Fwd: A bit OT: Looking for pinout for a Chinese Scale reader head

2022-05-09 Thread andy pugh
In the application you describe I would rather expect the USB to act
as a battery replacement. Though USB is 5V and the reader heads use a
1.5V battery, so this might be a dangerous assumption.

The scales can be powered through the data cable. This would be
useful in many fixed installations.

However, they do not like 5V. I experimented and things went wrong (no
smoke, but all LCD elements turned on) at 2.1V.

So, don't plug the USB into a USB socket without doing some careful
tests with a current-limited variable power supply first.

This probably isn't relevant to this query, but there are 3D-printable
connector designs: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2477494 as an
example.

In a bit of a coincidence, CTC just spammed me with an email informing
me that they have 50% off digital scales, code DS2022

Thanks Dave.  Somehow I missed that page on the shumatech web site.
That helps a lot.

I've got a DRO 550 that needs an enclosure and an overlay.  But the DRO
350 itself is working just fine, all I need are scales that work too and
are compatible with the DRO.

It may be time to dig out the scope or to upgrade to newer scales and

The chinese scales I got were good but not nearly as good as the

I've not been able to make the chinese scales play nicely with an

So I did the whole shebang in chinese as a manual readout X, Y, Z for
my mill. Before I removed the X accu-rite scale I checked it at 1 inch
intervals against the handwheel for the ballscrew.
This is a 1963 Cinci tracer converted to cnc and at this point back to
manual. The handwheel checked to 0.001" re the  digital display.

Clearly YMMV.  Best wishes.

Hi All,

I've got an elderly Shumatech DRO-350 and was using it this past week
and the read head on the X axis of my mini mill decided it was time
to give up the ghost. I ordered what looked to be a drop in
replacement but when it arrived, I noticed it had a mini USB
connector as it's data port. The old chinese scales used a plug that
had four sprung strips that lay against four strips in the reader
head. I'd been using a cable I got from Little Machine shop years ago
that had that plug on the scale end, and a 4 pin mini DIN connector
on the other that plugged into the DRO-350. Attached is a picture of
the connection lines. Wondering if anyone knows what the pinout for
the mini USB connector on the scale would be and if it would match up
to the lines pictured below on the mini DIN. If so I can cobble
together a cable that has the mini DIN on one and a mini USB on the
other.

Thanks,
Mark

Re: [Emc-users] A bit OT: Looking for pinout for a Chinese Scale reader head

2022-05-09 Thread Mark
Thanks Scott.  Unforch the DRO uses neither of those connectors.  I've
got the pinout for the mini Din, was just looking for the scale's mini
USB pinout.

Indeed, it is an interesting approach.

It may be time to dig out the scope or to upgrade to newer scales and
readout.
If the glass scale is very good then it is probably worth the fuss ...
else
The chinese scales I got were good but not nearly as good as the
accu-rite 150.
I've not been able to make the chinese scales play nicely with an
accu-rite readout.
So I did the whole shebang in chinese as a manual readout X, Y, Z for my
mill. Before I removed the X accu-rite scale I checked it at 1 inch
intervals against the handwheel for the ballscrew.
