Re: [Emc-users] Linux Workstation.

2023-05-09 Thread John Dammeyer
I have Debian running on a very old MacBook where it uses the Raspberry Pi user
interface. Looks like a Pi. Don't really like the MacBook touchpad.

I've downloaded the .iso file. Sad thing is it's just a tad larger than the
DVD R/W disks I have here. That means I'll have to look at a USB stick to
boot from.

The 1TB SSD I have can connect onto a USB 3.0 adaptor. I wonder, if I used
that as the target, if it would boot and install onto itself...

Debian is also what Open Media Vault is built to run on. I have it on a 2011
Mac Mini running a DLNA server for playing videos on a Samsung TV. OMV 6 makes
the Mac Mini obey the user when it comes to power settings and not going to
deep sleep where it falls off the LAN. OMV 5 required a terminal hack to stop
all power management in Debian.

I got a dual hard drive kit and installed a 500 gig and a 2 TB drive in the
Mac. Plenty of room, for now.

My $.02, debian is where its at. And, unless some huge, show stopper bug

I'm surprised you have to ask that John, its like you've been stuck in
2006 for the last decade and change.

Caldera was virtually gone when I built my first linux box in 1998, and
hasn't been heard of since, ditto Corel.
RedHat went commercial around 2003 and the last time I looked, a seat at
the RedHat table was $695 per machine a year, but the level of support
is great. When they did that, they also made Fedora for free but support
was at their convenience so there was always something important busted.
I jumped out of that frying pan, always playing lab rat for redhat about
3 years later, jumping to ubuntu and mandrake, but ubuntu turned into
windows & mandrake into mandriva and vanished.

Re: [Emc-users] Linux Workstation.

2023-05-09 Thread Gregg Eshelman via Emc-users
You can install Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 (WSL2) on Windows 10 and run GUI
Linux apps in Windows. Microsoft initially was only going to support WSL1 on
Windows 10 but at some point they decided to support WSL2.

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/install After installing WSL, use
the set default version command to set it to 2.

With WSL installed, you have bash in Powershell. Open a Powershell prompt
(preferably Run as Admin, especially if you're going to be using sudo for Admin
tasks in Linux) and type bash then enter to go to the bash shell.

You'll need a multi core CPU with virtualization support and virtualization
enabled in UEFI or BIOS. WSL2 works very well on a Ryzen 5 3600 6 core CPU with
32 gig DDR4. So far I've only installed GIMP and a few other things. Still have
to figure out how to allow Linux apps access to USB devices so I can have my
Canon LIDE scanner working with GIMP.

My current preference is Linux Mint (Ubuntu based distro) with the MATE
desktop. Second choice is Ubuntu 22 with Gnome classic desktop.

Desktop environment depends a lot on personal preference. I'm old fashioned,
liking drop down menus.
