Re: [Emc-users] Linux CAM.
I have recently been using rest machining to speed up some parts. One part I was working on, the first article came off at just over 5 hours run time. It had a lot of corers with 0.03" radius, so very small cutters were needed. Moving to larger cutters in the beginning for bulk material removal, then using progressively smaller cutters with "rest" to get the details done. I had to create some additional sketches to constrain the "rest" paths to certain areas of the part. Otherwise the path chosen by the Fusion tool would spend time cutting air. The part also had a bunch of drilled & tapped M2 holes. The LinuxCNC rigid tapping cycle worked wonderfully! I was in fear that when Autodesk picked up HSMWorks, shat they would not keep the Solidworks plugin available, but am glad they did. The high school Robotics team I still work with is still using Solidworks. --J. Re: [Emc-users] Linux CAM.
Andy, Are you confusing Inventor with Solidworks? Inventor is Autodesk's flagship CAD system and does use HSMworks for CAM. Then later the older version of HSM is moved over to Fusion 360. Inventor is Autodesk's competitor to DS Solidworks. They both seem to have two CAD products high and low AutoDesk's low is "Fusion 360" and their higher-end is "Inventor" DS low is "Solidworks and their high-end is "CATIA". Inventor and Solidworks seem to be roughly aligned. The problem with all the lower end CAM's is that they don't support Rest machining, which makes them fairly useless if you're machining steel. DeskProto didn't either as far as I remember. Now it does, but don't know how good it is. They have a "hobby" deal (something like the old Fusion hobby licence) that claims to be identical to their commercial version for 0 to ?248 for the multi-axis version. ___ Emc-users mailing list Emc-users@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/emc-users
Re: [Emc-users] Linux CAM.
HSMWorks started out as an add-on to Solidworks and Autodesk Inventor. Autodesk purchased the company and integrated it into their Fusion 360, while at the same time continued to sell it as a Solidworks add-on. Solidworks CAM is their (Dassault Group) own product. > On Sep 22, 2020, at 11:29 AM, andy pugh wrote: > > On Tue, 22 Sep 2020 at 17:23, Chris Albertson > wrote: > >> I found this some years ago when I was looking around. Re: [Emc-users] Linux CAM.
THey offer several versions starting with a free version and going up to a multi-axis version that can fo 5-axis indexed milling. They price different from hobby and commercial use. The top-end hobby price is $250. But you get the most bast version free. The big limitation with this is they all accept STL files as input. But even so, the high-end version does things like pockets and drilling. I found this some years ago when I was looking around. Then found Fusion360. It was obviously better. Now it appears Solidworks is going to take its place.
