Isn't the 403 a microAmp device? Or is it microVolt? Seems like most A/D
would need an external preamp.

They are a German company...
https://www.ichaus.de/product/iC-MN

They used to have a Sin/Cos development board available for about £80,
I know at least one person who is using one on his lathe.
However I can't see the sin-cos interpolator evaluation board on the
list any more:

They used to build these with fancy analog circuits -
today you can get cheap uP with 14bit A/D and the rest
would 'just' be a 'little' software - Easier than
SDR(Software Defined Radio) - but I wonder if they just
use the older chips?

Hmm, rather nice chip! but, you have to program a serial
EPROM, and it looks like you have to do a calibration
procedure on every chip and then program a value into the
EPROM to get proper operation. That sounds like a but of
complication for production. Maybe I misunderstood.

AMS makes some of these as well - the main chip was $18- but I would find something that all you need to do is build a
cable.

Could the 7i49 (with completely different firmware) do it. That is sin/cos

Look for a sin/cos to incremental converter or build one. They pop up
from time to time on ebay for ~$100ea.
