Yikes! OTOH, if he was on the chute side, I expect his legs probably got a
bit of a message from the rapidly exiting material. Hopefully much the same
stinging verbiage was heard from Daddy? As a learning aid?

I had taken my chipper up the hill 2 houses and was helping a friend take
care of some brush he had cut to make room for a privacy fence, and made the
mistake of walking past the outlet chute a couple of times when it was doing
its thing. That will get your attention. He hadn't wanted to attach the
catch sack, so it was just shooting across the yard, and when were all done
he fired up the rider and mulched and spread it till it was largely gone.

Yeah, I'm still running a 1968 Bolens. It has a mini-PTO shaft, and a
bevel gearbox on the mower deck that changes speed and does the
right-angle change in shaft direction. I got the tiller for it too, and
a snow blade. I had a chance to get the 2-stage snow blower, but the
seller wanted a lot of money and I couldn't figure out how it worked.
Eventually I figured out it goes on the BACK of the tractor, which
sounds like a crazy way to use a snowblower. It has a single-cyl 12 Hp
Tecumseh engine. I put a motorcycle carb on it to replace the totally
worn out, and just "bad idea" side-draft carb with an updraft manifold.
This works a lot better, but needs a fuel pump to raise the gas.

On-topic part : I made a number of these mods with my EMC-controlled
Bridgeport mill. A carb adaptor on the engine block, a bell crank to
change the governor linkage to the throttle plate, and the fuel pump. I
used a floppy drive motor with an eccentric shaft to pump a neoprene
bellows.

This tractor and accessories cost me $1100, I think, about 20 years
ago. I've REALLY gotten my money's worth out of the thing, though.

Going back to the original comment from Gene, above, I ran over my
youngest kid's foot about 2 weeks ago with it. He has this nasty habit
of following me around and trying to "help" like holding tree branches
out of my way. I got REALLY close to chopping his foot off with the
thing, just inches I think, and was really upset that my reaction time
was WA too slow. Just by sheer luck his foot missed the blades
because he was on the outlet chute side where the housing extends
another 4" or so beyond the blades. I HOPE we both learned a good
lesson that time!

Anyway, since Roland has shut down his shop, there might be an
opportunity to pick up that John Deere wear plate business, although
Deere has probably found another supplier. Not sure you'd want that big

One of the bennies of growing up in farm country were big, wide open
fields that farmers let go fallow for a year or so, and what we used to
call "field cars." Dad would get us an old clunker, drop it off in the

Yup, gimme a 2 stroke, and if its built good, I'll give you something in the
2hp/ci for giddyup. I figure my last go cart, with its 13.5 cid deflector
head water cooled engine, was making a good 25hp, cuz 100 mph was not a dream
if the sprocket was right. The tracks I ran it on were slower than that, so
the 15/78 I was running made about 90, but it could do 80 from 25 in 75 feet.

I firmly believe that anyone applying for a drivers license must first goto
the local cart track, and spend a few days trying to break the track record,
and will only qualify for a road test in daddy's Lexus if they came within

Then, and only then, will they have an inkling of how to handle a dicey

doing a spinout or whatever, all without mussing up the form and paint on

We could cut the traffic deaths by 90% or more with just that change.

Yeah, I think the real cure is to jack it up on its nose and cut 3/4" off the
rear apron, which is separate from the circular blade surround. This is
where the SP mechanism is but it should be plenty strong even after 3/4" was
trimmed and the mower then capable of being tipped up in front and pulled
back a hell of a lot easier. Either that, or figure out how to make a
reverse gear. Its this rear length overhang that is behind the actual axle
that tips down that 3/4" and digs into the dirt. I have a 4.5" grinder that
should handle that nicely. After doing the gross cut with a sabre saw & a
hacksaw blade in it.

Now where did I put that round tuit?

Ah.. the safety cops...

The last mower I bought was a 2 cycle Lawn Boy now banned since it
is 2 cycle. It is great since you can cut on steep slopes without fear
of the oil not making it to the bearings.

Also the later 2 strokes made serious power when turned up a bit. It is
almost impossible to kill even in high grass.

When I bought that mower I spent some time taking out baffles that
prevented the grass (and stones) from exiting the mower deck quickly.
( Grinder and die grinder with cutting wheel required. ) Prior to my
modifications the deck constantly plugged
when cutting heavy grass. My wife thought I was nuts to start cutting
up the mower deck, but it didn't work as it was!

Yup, a nearly $400 Cub Cadet. But OSHA or somebody has gotten into the lawn
mower design business in the name of safety, and mandated that the skirt
around the blade be made deep enough to protect the errant toe that may get
under it. Unforch, this also lowers the skirt so damned cloise to the ground
that a 1" bump in the dirt catches on it, and the backup process is often
done only with brute force jerks of a hundred pounds or so to unstick it from
the 1" high hill its hung on. In the end, the self propelled is not that
much of a labor saver. They have also changed the drive flange to blade fit,
so that one cannot fit a stack of fender washers to lower the blade, which to
get the same height, would let one raise the deck, which it has quite nice

There is a motenc config example in the 2.4 software, but the motenc hal
component is not in the 2.4 software. I think they decided to remove
device specific files for devices such as the
Mesa boards and the Vital systems boards. But they did have the device
specific hal components in the 2.3 software.

Are you working from the motenc example file in version 2.3?Vital
systems should be able to supply you with a sample config that works
with 2.3 for a servo system, or you should be able to use the config
from version 2.4 with
a few changes.

I'm not familiar with that board set or the motenc driver. Sorry.

Re: [Emc-users] Howto files for EMC.

2010-05-24 Thread EKCo Inc Don Stanley
Hi Dave;
I am trying to configure a servo lathe using the
Motenc light interface, loaded with the EMC 2.3 Live Disk.
With features CSS, Threading, and Home at the index after
Limit/Home Switch positioning.

My information so far has been the Integrator Manual
and examples files. This is a difficult task with no examples
of this equipment configuration: and a very important
"motenc.0.enc-0x-index-enable" pin missing from the
Integrator Manual.

I am now informed that there is indeed a
"motenc.0.enc-0x-index-enable" pin in the hal_motenc.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Don

Hi Gean;
The link you sent is very helpful.
Thanks.
You sent me two emails Saturday. They both had the
same link. Was that what you intended?

Re: [Emc-users] Howto files for EMC.

2010-05-22 Thread Dave
Don,

Can you give an examples of what you are talking about?

Are you looking for a HOWTO on a Mill conversion or a lathe
Conversion... a plasma cutter, a router...??

You could write a book on how to do that... In fact I think there are a
few that have already been written!

EMC2 is used for many things.

Dave

Re: [Emc-users] Howto files for EMC.

2010-05-22 Thread Frank Tkalcevic
This is really something that new users like yourself should consider
contributing to the wiki. Experienced users will generally think all those
"how to add X to .ini or .hal" as basic things everyone should know - given
the type of questions on the mailing list, this is obviously not true.

The wiki is available for everyone to edit. It's simple to add a new HowTo
list page. And then add the how to topic pages.

Re: [Emc-users] Howto files for EMC.

2010-05-22 Thread EKCo Inc Don Stanley
Thanks Alex; Seriously.
That is a list of WHAT is available, or what to do.
I was hoping for list of HOWTO and WHY to pick
from the WHAT list for a given feature or function.

Most of the traffic on this mailing list is people trying to
discover what to put into the .ini and .hal files to make their
machine do what EMC is capable of doing.
It appears many people may be accepting less performance
because they can not afford the time to discover the better
way (by experimenting).
And that is a shame when EMC is such a powerful tool.

This is not a rebuttal Alex, but a plea.
Seriously
Thanks
Don

For Linux, those type files really makes incredible detailed and
complicated setup operations a cook book process.
Even if they do not address your exact problem they show all the
things that need to be addressed.

Here is hoping.
