#24 stranded won't be reliable with those red connectors. They are made for
#22 stranded wire. You need the white 640441 connectors for #24.

Here is the simple tool. You might find it on ebay too.

Re: [Emc-users] Punch down

2018-08-07 Thread Ralph Stirling
It doesn't crimp at all. Your "punch down" term is actually very accurate.
They are insulation displacement (IDC) connectors, so the wire is just
shoved down between the fork blades, which pierce the insulation and
make a gas-tight connection to the stranded wire. You have to use the
correct connectors for the gauge of wire you are using. I keep #22 to
#26 connectors on hand, and have sometimes pushed the wire gauge
on the red ones up to #18 or #16. #16 is a bit dicy though, as things
start getting distorted. Putting too small a wire into one of the connectors
will leave the connection open. You don't strip your wires before terminating
them with these connectors. I haven't used the strain reliefs, but they are
probably a good idea.

I think TE (Amp) does make a simple "T" shaped hand tool for these, but
it doesn't work nearly as well or as quickly as the pistol-grip tool I got.

This is what you want. Not cheap, but I got the crimp head and handle in
separate ebay listings. I use bags of the IDC connectors for hooking up step
motors and sensors in my lab. I use 0.1" long-tail headers to connect the
MTA100 IDC connectors together. Very handy for quick, temporary, reusable
setups.

I've found the punchdown is a pretty dependable connection, haveing racks
of them in broadcast facilities. Lowes/HomeDepot/Menards should have the
tool for sale in the electrical aisle. It obviously isn't intended for
high frequency's as the punch block at 500 mhz would be a very lumpy
impedance, but for audio/telephone, even control stuff up to about a
megahertz, it should be fine.

Which Amphenol connectors?
If you mean the M23 which need a 4-way crimp, then I have had very
good results with the very cheap tools, which have the advantage over
the expensive ones of being adjustable for crimp length.

(or the smaller size for smaller crimps)

The small one also works nicely on Lemo connectors.
