There is something to be said for using tools that are familiar.
is the table already motorised? Does is have an existing drive? What
control signals does that drive expect?

This doesn't really sound like a job for a full blown Linuxcnc install, a
simple servo control and DRO should be all that's required.

Correct Todd..One is a Milacron 850SX and the Okuma has a Numatix control

I think maybe some of the machines he wants to use it on might not be running

Why not add a 4th axis configuration to each machine that might use it? Then
you can properly integrate the motion control?

You can actually do it with a single config. I have a jumper in one of the
connectors that the rotary connects through. If the system doesn?t see the link
(via an IO pin) it doesn?t enable the axis.

Mine actually f-errors if you try to move the axis, but that would be easy to
fix.

Perhaps I misread the original request but are the associated mills controlled
by LinuxCNC? If so then Andy's comments seem perfect. If not, there are
numerous online plans for Arduino controlled indexers.

I do essentially the same thing w/o the detection jumper. If its
unplugged it still has a missimg/undefined home_sequence so its marked
as homed whereever it is. Like this in the ini file:
[JOINT_3]
TYPE= ANGULAR
HOME= 0.0
HOME_SEQUENCE   = 0
HOME_SEARCH_VEL = 0
HOME_LATCH_VEL  = 0
HOME_FINAL_VEL  = 0

It, if used, generally gets touched_off someplace just to establish a
reference.

Just never unplug or plug it in with power applied.

To make that easier but its not done yet, I have just obtained some more
40 amp SSR's, and will add an activator link in my .hal file so that all
motor power is off and the machine unhomed when E-stop is false. I
already soft-start the spindle supply with 2 more relays, driven by
motion-enable, one to soft-start that supply thru a 100 ohm 200 watt
resistor and another one to bypass the resistor 3 seconds later so I can
service its 17 amp max load with a 20 amp breaker, else its unrush will
reliably clear a 30 amp breaker. And a 30 is not code on a 10 ga circuit
here...

[Emc-users] Rotary Head

2020-02-20 Thread Jeff Johnson
Hello,

Owner and user of some big iron using Linux CNC. I am not a noob but close,
I started down this path 5-6 years ago and have hung Linux on three turning
centers and 1 Three axis mill.

With that being said I went through a steep learning curve on the first
machine and at the time had a very good maintenance man employed here that
took off and ran with most of the heavy

lifting of using Linuxcnc . For the most part we just run what we have and
never update so my limited Linux skills have become very rusty (they were
never that great).

Now I have a project that I would like the experts to guide me on if you
guys see fit. I have a rotary axis that I want a stand-alone control on. One
axis display, Touchy maybe? Punch in the degrees of rotary

and execute as needed during a pause in the machining program on the machine
control. I would be able to move this head to two different mills for
indexing operations, one being an old Okuma Bridge mill

with 10 feet of travel.

Any thoughts or ideas on the best way to pull this off? PC? RPi4? Which
operator interface will work the best? I have a very nice 20" head sitting
here with a RotoKing control by J&P Control Systems out of

Connecticut that would work if I could find an operation manual for it,
Google has turned up nothing for me.

Any thoughts on this project?

Jeff Johnson
