Re: [Emc-users] 3rd axis for plasma table really needed?
Gregg You will forever regret building a plasma machine without a proper Z axis and Torch Height Control (THC). That was the action of the torch touching and then retreat to cut that you saw. Without the Z axis you will cut some hobby stuff, maybe. To do a proper job of it, the Z axis and THC is needed. I service cnc machines that other folk have build for themsleves as part of my business and I get to see all kind of problems related to plasma machines. I also build my own machines for customers and for all the trouble that comes with a plasma machine, I would not do without the Z and THC. There are many other factors as well when it comes to making a good cut. Search a bit on constant velocity and plasma's. You will be surprised to see the amount of effort that is required do do a proper cut. Also the Z axis and THC does not cost that much more. Finally, in my opinion, a plasma without a Z axis is like a fishing without a hook. It can be done, but it take much more effort. The one that didn't had a simple hand crank to set the height. Other than not having close enough support slats to keep the cutouts from tipping so the torch hit them, it worked as well as the rest, some of which also had the tipping problem. -- Regards / Groete Marius D. Re: [Emc-users] 3rd axis for plasma table really needed?
Will it work... well you saw the video and yes it works. Is it productive and will it produce clean cuts NO! Can you get started that way if your on a budget Yep. Can you cut thin material that way Nope. Can you cut smaller parts after carefully aligning up the torch head and material Yep. When I built my plasma I included a Z axis but didn't have a THC system installed. They were all to expensive and complicated to use with EMC. But Peter from Mesa came to my rescue and designed the THCAD card. If your going to the trouble to build a plasma table the THCAD card is a very cost effective solution to the THC problem. The second most important addition to my plasma cutter was a floating torch head with a micro switch to touch off on the material. I jog to my start point and hit go, the torch moves down till the micro switch trips then moves up to the pierce height, the torch starts, after the pierce delay it moves down to the cut height then takes off cutting under the control of the thc component which gets feedback from the THCAD card indicating the tip voltage. If you are cutting thinner metal it will warp and the THC is needed for that.. Dave On 3/28/2013 6:40 PM, Gregg Eshelman wrote: Watched a lot of plasma table action on Youtube last night.
