I owned waterjet cutting machine for 6 years and did a complete retrofit of CNC controls (yes, of course, LinuxCNC is running that machine at the moment). Feel free to drop an email with any questions you have, I will try to answer as good as I can. IMHO that kinematics system of rotating the nozzle around TCP is very nice and the main reason it is so widely used is because it is very compact in dimensions. I have been trying to come up with something as compact like that to be used in the 5 axis plasma machine I intend to build for myself, but I have not come up with anything useful. I have no idea, how is it called, I just know that timing belt is used to drive that tilted rotary joint. See that ring down near the surface of material, help in such a long arm? That is used to probe material surface before piercing and during cutting and also to prevent colliding nozzle somewhere. IMHO fixed TCP is mandatory for anything like this. I do not see, how you could do something like that with this kind of 5 axis head: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NceH2zGzLyc Yes, there is a ring for THC, but it does not provide correct height as the nozzle is tilted.
