[Enigmail] Disabling header encryption in built-in OpenPGP mode

2020-11-09 Thread pp foundation
Dear folks

I'm testing the built-in OpenPGP mode for TB 78 and was wondering how
the header protection (activated by default when using encryption) can
be deactivated.

Thanks!

--hernani

PS:
In the config editor, I could just find a suitable enigmail.* variable,
but not one for the built-in mode as of TB 78.

Small correction here: you get for any account an own key pair or an
available key pair is used, if key size is sufficient (e.g.,
>=RSA-2048). This is to avoid easy correlation by public key; so every
account is considered a new identity, so e.g.:

anonym...@hacktivism.ch would be an identity as well as
hernani@pep.foundation is one.

They would get distinct key pairs generated by default.

As for how KeySync looks, see this:

https://www.pep.security/docs/general_information.html#sync

And yes, p≡p for Thunderbird has KeySync working: you can sync your
devices with other TB instances, with Android, iOS and Outlook devices,
if you use them with a common email address.

This add-on is for automatic email encryption, creating a key pair for
each account you configure and/or importing secret and public keys from
your Enigmail settings, be that for "Junior" or "classic" Enigmail users.

As a special feature, it also to easily synchronize your secret keys
among your devices, if they're using p≡p and a common email address.

pEp is not against PGP, it's just PGP-supporting as much as it makes
sense for interop reasons and goes beyond email already today; and it's
designed from the very beginning on to support other crypto as well

By default, if you're using Enigmail in Enigmial/pEp mode, key pairs are
generated per-account.

The approach of pEp here is to automatically engage in end-to-end
encryption whenever possible and to generate keys if not available for
that (privacy-by-default approach) -- that is assuming most people don't
even have a notion of the term "key" (like with messengers).

There's not yet a fine-grained setting to define that per-account and
there's also no remote lookups being done to key servers by default;
also no keys are uploaded to key servers automatically.

For now, to do the kind of controls you want, you would need to disable
pEp, which is done in the privacy settings of Thunderbird.

If you interested in some background, just check the blog entry (which
was updated three times now):

https://pep.foundation/blog/enigmailpep-current-release-for-windows-is-faulty-solution-in-progress/index.html

We're still working on a solution for Windows, which can be shipped to
Windows users (especially to the the few existing ones which got
equipped with 1.0.23 and have not yet reacted): the effective number
(MAX) of such users can be provided by Patrick anytime soon.

In any case, I think we need a much more general approach to this, and
thus I opened a bug (#909):

https://sourceforge.net/p/enigmail/bugs/909/

It should not be possible that such things happen, not in Enigmail/p≡p
and in no other mode Enigmail supports. Sending $whatever over SMTP
which doesn't match what was indicated to the user shouldn't be possible.

(If you read the updates on the blog entry: Indeed,
it could also have been that a temporary occur produced an
OUT_OF_MEMORY error from libetpan ... like it was now produced
constantly (?) in p≡p distribution 1.0.23 for Windows as libiconv was
 not linked in.)

An update on this:

New Enigmail users on Windows now again get version 1.0.8 of the p≡p
distribution since like 5pm CET (thanks, Patrick!), which is the initial
version of March 2018. It also works with recent software like TB60 and
gpg4win 3.1.3. Version 1.0.8 is far from optimal (has some bugs), but it
can be used. That got also confirmed by c't.

For notable differences between 1.0.8 and 1.0.23, check:

https://pep.foundation/blog/enigmailpep-version-1023-of-pep-distribution-for-enigmail-208-and-higher-is-live/index.html

You can check the fact that you have 1.0.8 by comparing the version
number in the version.json file here (example path):

C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\468zy2v.default\pepmda\

The files in the pepmda\ directory should be from March and match those:

https://software.pep.foundation/enigmail/1-LATEST/previous/1.0.8/

If you want to force a downgrade from 1.0.23 (faulty Windows release,
available from September 26 until today) to 1.0.8, you can do the following:

* * *

1. Close Thunderbird.

2. Kill p≡p JSON Server Adapter, the p≡p service that interacts with
   Enigmail:

   killtask /f /im pep-json-server.exe

3. Delete the pepmda\ of your profile (see above).

4. Restart Thunderbird.

* * *

Additionally, a version 1.0.25 -- specifically for Windows -- is being
tested to replace the buggy 1.0.23 release.

[Enigmail] Enigmail/p≡p: Current Release for Windows Is Faulty — Solution in Progress

2018-10-02 Thread pp foundation
Dear folks

Please take note.

URL:
https://pep.foundation/blog/enigmailpep-current-release-for-windows-is-faulty-solution-in-progress/index.html

The German magazine for computer technology ("Magazin für
Computertechnik", c't magazine) has drawn our attention to the obviously
faulty update 1.0.23 of the p≡p distribution for Enigmail under Windows.
As a result, users of the p≡p distribution published a few days ago can
only reliably encrypt and decrypt e-mails in the classic Enigmail mode.
A solution for the Enigmail/p≡p mode will follow as soon as possible.

Only Enigmail/p≡p on Windows Is Affected

The update of the p≡p distribution in version 1.0.23 for Enigmail/p≡p,
available since September 26, causes such problems only under Windows
systems. On Linux and macOS systems the Enigmail/p≡p mode works as
expected. Also not affected are the products of p≡p security: p≡p für
Android, iOS und Outlook (see also pep.software).

Known Symptoms

The following symptoms of the faulty update for Windows are known:

* Attached keys of other PGP and p≡p users are not imported.
* Messages to oneself or to existing contacts, where a key is actually
available, are not always encrypted, especially not to oneself —
despite correct color coding / Privacy Status.
* Existing encrypted messages are not decrypted.

Workaround

Until a new update for Enigmail/p≡p is available under Windows, the
classic Enigmail mode can be used to encrypt and decrypt messages. For
that, you have to change Thunderbird's Privacy settings to the mode
"S/MIME and Enigmail".

Solution in Progress

We are working hard on a new release of the p≡p distribution, which will
make Enigmail/p≡p usable again under Windows. We apologize for the
problems and we will make sure that this does not happen again in the
future. We would like to thank the c't magazine for the timely reports —
and the patience!

I can remember similar situations just under following circumstances:

- Enigmail (supposedly) running in Enigmail/pEp mode with an
*unsupported* GnuPG version (below 2.1.17 and not 2.0.30).
- The pEp JSON Server effectively not running anymore.

For the Privacy Status: usually it's only unknown as long as no

> Windows 10 64-bit, TB60, Enigmail 2.0.8, gnupg 2.2.9

... from that it shouldn't be any GnuPG version issue. 2.2.9 is supported.

Can you, first of all, pls check if there's the pEp JSON Server running
at all?

Either by looking at the Task Manager or using cmd's tasklist command:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/administration/windows-commands/tasklist

If it's running, there's both a binary pep-json-server running with a
REST service reachable under port at least 4223 -- try e.g.,
http://localhost:4223/

I discussed that already once with Patrick: to be done; thanks for
reminding.

Basically it's a mode - the Enigmail/p≡p mode - where all things keys,
crypto etc. are hidden and messages get automatically signed and
encrypted, with public keys attached. Furtherly, symbols are introduced
(per-message and per-contact) if messages / contacts are secured
(=yellow) or even authenticated (=green); authentication is done by
comparing Trustwords, i.e., fingerprint-word mappings in different
langauges.

There will also be ways to synchronize secret keys, addesses and
contacts between different devices - via IMAP.

It would be indeed be more honest if they would say to unintall mail
clients and install Signal instead. It's hilarious.

Can you send us the message as you receive it and decrypted -- to see if
anything structurally can be seen?

For the pubkey, even if attached it cannot be imported by Enigmail/pEp
if there's no decrypt.

Do you see a pubkey attached when decrypted on the console?

It would be interesting to know what was not working, assuming you were
already using Enigmail.

If there are bugs for this major release (which start to appear, of
course) it would be nice to have them closed for an Enigmail 2.0.1
bugfix release.

For current Ubuntu(-based) versions it's still an issue, because of a
too old GnuPG version.

You need GnuPG 2.0.30 or >= 2.1.17 for it to be able to run, which is
possible as of Bionic (18.04), cf. also:

https://twitter.com/pEpFoundation/status/978430454914314241
https://packages.ubuntu.com/bionic/allpackages

That is, unless you manage to upgrade to a newer GnuPG version, it
doesn't run.

A further suggestion, like used in pEp:

  Enable unprotected (message) subjects

=> The framing is similar to dkg's -- "leak it!"
