As explained in [1], there is an assistant to help you migrating your
keys and settings from GnuPG/Enigmail to TB 78. I wrote that piece of
software and labelled it Enigmail 2.2, such that existing users of
Enigmail can smoothly migrate to TB 78 without needing to install
something manually.

Not surprisingly, every piece of software needs some maintenance from
time to time -- that's why you got an update. As long as you don't
uninstall Enigmail, you can expect to receive updates to it from time to
time.

Well, this is also true most other places (in theory at least, in
practice it's another thing entirely!). But if she says she'll be open
"until Friday" it's more likely to mean she's open until 6 pm on Friday,
than until 6 am. ;-)

Thank you, Andrew! I agree: the American usage for "until X" is not
universally held.

As an example: if an American shopkeeper tells you her business is open
"until six", that means if you stop by at five minutes after six you'll
find the store is closed. :)

I apologize to everyone for this miscommunication.

I think this is an American-English idiom misunderstanding. Americans use
“through” quite consistently to mean “until the end of”, which then implies by
omission that “until” means “until the beginning of” - but such use of
“through” is uncommon this side of the Atlantic, so an unqualified “until” is
ambiguous. It could mean “until some time in” (unless of course it’s an
instantaneous reference like “until midnight”).

"Until", not "until and including". :)

You're saying, "from now to December 31, 2020". I'm saying, "from now
to January 1, 2021". If that one day makes a big difference, though,
I'll cheerfully accept the correction. :)

*certainly* not for more than 6 additional months.

I did the upgrade from TB68 to TB78 on two of my Windows 10 office
computers. One went flawlessly. The other had a hitch with trying to
migrate a non-existent key but that was solved and the process completed.

After trying out TB78 on my main computer, I found that two very
important add-ons that I use heavily in message composing ("External
Editor" and "Signature Switch") are not supported in TB78 and at least
one author is not sure whether he will migrate it to TB78. We all went
through this with Firefox last year.

As a result I had to reinstall TB68 on that computer. Even though I
knew the architecture of how TB is stored in Windows and had a current
file backup it took a lot of time and unfortunately some mail messages
were lost in the transition.

The upshot is that unless those extensions are migrated I will have to
keep using TB68 and Enigmail on that computer. The other computer will
keep running TB78.

Thank you for all your efforts in bringing usable encryption to the user
community.

2020-09-01 Thread rollstory
Dear enigmailsupport team,

since thunderbird 78 doesnt need any enigmail. How long are you going to
support your thunderbird add-on? The problem i am having is, that the
thunderbird 78 doesnt use your "empfängerregeln" (german word i have no
translation for), which i use extensively to encrypt mailling lists. But
if there is no support i gonna have to stop this and switch to Schleuder. Can
you give me some advise=?

kind regards
