In addition to all those, a splash of black and white is something
that might be needed. Any more ideas on that?

 Hi all,
Now, I know raster is working on a new theme, and I know a lot of
people already love it, but its so far a lot of the same in terms of
whats already out there. (Please dont debate that on this thread!) And
I applaud him for keeping to the norm and keeping it simple, but EFL
is far more powerful than whats already in there. Im thinking about a
theme that does still keep a semi-traditional edge, but really pushes
the boundaries of UI, 'beautiful'-ness and originality.

 Here are some simple rules.
 1. Dont copy Mac. -Apple already done it.
 2. Dont copy Vista. -It sucks. :)
 3. Dont copy KDE4. -KDE already done it.
 4. (Should I even mention gnome?) -Sarcasm.
 5. Make sure its entirely usable by people. Half-wits dont generally
wander too far from gnome. :)
 6. Make the user say Oh my. Thats something E17 can do? Im in love.
 7. K. I. S. S. (Keep It Simple, Stupid!)

Youre probably wondering, thats all good and fine, but this means
 nothing without screenshots.
So, Im asking you all for some input. Just some simple ideas, be it
for a check box, a window button, a slider, a background... whatever.
If you have any screenshots, or like the way some other theme already
does something, throw that in there too. But remember, Originality
is going to be key to this design experiment. I also would like to see
this come as a separate theme thats installed as default to show some
contrast in E design between rasters new one and this other that
 hopefully we all make.

Lets make E kick ass all over the place!

When you're writing open source code you are writing it for the people, for

Consistency in the project's core code base is a must. Face it. If it's not,
what kind of project it is? This is ridiculous, and you know it.

If it's someone or else's dictated views, and that does not address the

becoming a very small project indeed, or simply remaining the elitist niche

Stop talking about dictators and dictating. Adolf Hitler was a dictator and
 we have no Hitlers around.
The project itself and its community/user base are growing and I can see it.
But, if you keep fooling around with these license shit that is doing
nothing but frustrating people others may leave, yes. In my opinion, Eina is
a good thing, but you guys should either keep it's license consistent with
the licensing of the other core libraries or take it somewhere else and stop

Sort of ancillary to this discussion but as point of fact:

GPL was designed to keep software free, away from people who would
close it and then sell it. The Changing the license is hard with
the GPL is very intentional and not entirely a negative point. It
prevents someone from changing it 3 years later and making it
not-free.

If you read any of Richard Stallman the above comes through loud and
clear everytime he talks, and like everybody else here, IANAL but
that's common Stallman rhetoric.

My personal views are this is what we need to see differently. Feel free to
chime in and add to what you'd like to see on the new site

*1. Create links to all the software ( wiki, bug tracker, forums,
 source browser etc)*

*2. Make the website more user oriented. A lot of the content can be
moved to the wiki. We need the website to be a lot more static. *

*3. Separate developer sections from user.*

*4. Create a feature list page in order to make E more of a product
that we're trying to talk about*

 *5. weekly or biweekly articles*

*a. We will have a submission article system in which we will stack up
articles and release one a week regarding E. *

*b. This will allow users who aren't good at coding or able to help in
that way to keep track of what's happening and write articles regarding the
 progress.*

*c. This will also help people who are writing applications be able to
follow development and get inspiration from other application developers.*

*d. Or just content such as user guides for different things*

 *6.Translations*

*a. Allow people to have the website content translated into multiple
 languages.*

*7. One login to rule them all*

*a. Having 10 different logins for all the different software isn't
working it would be really nice to see a lot of them consolidated into a
login api such as openid or google accounts.*
All in all the website needs to me more of a pamphlet than a handbook for
 everything under the sun.

*Note* Please do not start on any designs That will come later and we
have plans for making prizes for it. Stay tuned.

issue only Enlightenment has and a lot people asks why does this happen,
even in our OpenGEU FOrums. Even creting EWL, ETK, etc. themes is really
something bad a user has to do. Once you create an E17 theme, it should
 be
one for everything, you cannot have to create a theme for every library
used. No other DE / VM has such a behaviour. For example, in Gnome you
customize everything by creating a GTK theme, same in KDE. A user cannot
 be
left with no choice than creating a single E17 theme and let the others
applications look weird and different from the Others. This is rally
 really
bad for any user and it also gives the users a really bad impression of
 the
entire Enlightenment. I think we should find a way to unify everything
 in a
single basic theme that has to be created, Sthithaprajna's way may be one
but tehre may be other ways too.

Just please do not understimate this problem, because it is a problem
 and it
a very huge one too.

This is fine for GTK and KDE as they don't have 3 separate toolkits
behind them. Enlightenment has the E17 widgets which theme the window
manager, Ewl and Etk as toolkits. All three of these work in a differing
fashion and don't depend on each other.

So, are we going to suddenly require that you have Ewl or Etk installed
to use E17 or have E17 installed to use Ewl? That doesn't make much
   sense as they're independent.

Until the window manager moves over to a specific widget toolkit we're
going to have duplication in our theming.

as will you as long as u have 2 widget sets.

fact: 1 gtk theme does NOt cover metacity - same with qt - does not cover
 kwin.
they are different. fact is that e doesnt know about ewl or etk. it doesn't
 try
and do anything. nothing technically stops a single .edj theme shipping
everything, but your gtk and qt apps will still look different too - so are
 we
now to also somehow try and theme gtk and qt from the same sources? we aren't
even trying to solve this problem.

  Hello,

I'm not sure if there's a bug in the E17 fullscreen policy or in
Blender, so I'll ask here before filing a bug.

   blender --help
  ...
  Window options:
-wForce opening with borders (default)
-WForce opening without borders
-p sx sy w h Open with lower left corner at sx, sy
and width and height w, h

Both options work well with other window managers (e.g. Metacity). But
they both doesn't work as I expect with E17.

If I use option -w it opens in a maximized window, but the window in
as big as the complete screen and stays below my lower shelf. To get
the desired result I need to resize the window to a small size and then
maximize the window again with the maximize button.

I can confirm this behavior.

The option -W is also not working really good. The window is
maximized without border, but does still stay below the bar.

Again, same results here.

I know there're much possible configuration settings that influence
this. But I'm very confused to finding out the correct ones.

BTW: See my next mail about that topic.

  regards
  Andreas

 it doesn't help that much.

Many people on IRC was pro to this change, with some against. So I'd
like to ask those that are against, what reasons, do you see any

 Reasons to move to GIT:
  - it's fast, very fast. diff, log, commit are impressively fast.
  - offline operations. this helps a lot when you're on a plane... I
often write code in these situations, probably raster will do a lot
 now.
  - distributed environment:
- allows you to revert your commits (no more commits: fix typo, missing
 file)
- per-user branches, very fast and also very easy to do merges

those are my main points, you can google for git versus cvs or so to
 get comparisons.

[E-devel] Patch for todo item

2007-10-28 Thread Zachary Goldberg
Completing a todo item:

-* nice to have a menu item for a window for add keyboard shortcut to run this
- app would be nice usability

Going to attach the patch, but seeing as that hasn't worked in the
past, its also available at:

http://www.bluesata.com/ekbd.patch

I'm not entirely sure what the text of the button should be to make
its purpose blatent. At the moment its Add Keyboard Shortcut; which
isn't entirely obvious. Suggestions welcome.

Cheers,

Time to get back to basics for a second.

I've just migrated about 10 desktops back to Gnome ( and Compiz ) from
E17, and the most common comment is NOT about the flashy effects and
such, but about very simple window management that E17 does very poorly.

Basically, E17 is sloppy with regards to window size positioning.
Every single f*g desktop I'd walk past had the same problems:

  - Some new windows open with the correct dimensions, but cover shelves
because of bad placement. For example if we have a shelf at the bottom,
we'll invariably get windows appear that hit the very bottom of the
screen. When the window is dragged up a bit, it fits perfectly, ie
doesn't cover the shelf. But why does it need to be dragged into
  position?

  - Some windows ( usually ones that were previously maximized before
being closed, examples are firefox, evolution, nautilus, openoffice )
open covering the entire screen. These need to be resized back down so
we can see the shelf. If the window is resized to perfectly match the
screen / shelf, and then closed WITHOUT hitting maximize, it will
re-open next time with the correct size. But if it's resized down, and
then maximized to cover the screen ( minus shelf ), the next time it's
opened, it resizes back up to cover the entire screen.

This is all compounded by the fact that most of the users here aren't
aware of the ability to resize or move windows once they're opened. Sad
but very true. Trust me, I've tried to teach them, but now I give up.

Before posting this, I have updated to the latest cvs from today,
deleted my .e folder, and tested thoroughly. I have tried all the
different maximize policies. I have only used the default theme and not
enabled any extra modules ( I've disabled some modules in fact ).

I realise that some might be tempted to suggest that I use the
'remember' settings to lock these windows into position / size. I reject
that. This suggestion ( in this context at least ) is a workaround for a
set of long-standing bugs. I'm not saying that the remember settings
aren't good or don't have their place, but that place is not to cover
the above lack of window management finesse. New windows should NOT
  cover shelves. Full stop.

So please. Window sizing and placement needs some attention.

[E-devel] possible problem with ecore_events

2007-02-07 Thread Zachary Goldberg
I just recently got evdev to work (yay) and have assigned some newly
usable mouse buttons to some defined commands using E's mouse
bindings. I noticed that sometimes the commands would be called
twice. After some digging I found the issue:

When the mouse is inside a window, its called once (its in the border
context).

When the mouse is on a desktop its in TWO contexts, zone and
container. I confirmed this with GDB, the mouse event handler is
being called twice with the two different contexts.

I'm not sure how to go about fixing this, so im posting it here. Also
curious if anybody else is witnessing this behavior.

Thanks,
ZGold

Minor addition to that -- now it works even after E restarts :)
(Attatched diff is a replacement -- it is NOT a patch ontop of the
previous patch)

[E-devel] Slideshow patch

2007-01-16 Thread Zachary Goldberg

This further increases Xinerama support with slideshow. Prior to this
patch occasionally the two zones (Monitors) would be come in sync,
and would have the same background. I believe the cause of this was
that they slideshows were initialized at the same time, and had the
same rand seeds. This patch simply adjusts the seed by the GCC ID.
Its one of the only things I could think of that would cause the two
to have different seeds. If this is too hackish feel free to let me
know if theres any superior way of doing it.

A wandering we go through the learning of the EFL =P. Today's lesson?
Gadcon != Gadcon Class.

The patch attatched fixes a minor functionality issue in the previous
patch. TODO: Fix how all of slideshow does randomization, and insure
that when they startup they get different randoms.
