Re: [e-users] e18 on Radeon? WAS: Terminology 0.4.0 is out!

2013-12-11 Thread John C
Raster,

If you read the post instead of getting your hackles up whenever you
hear the name AMD/ATI you'd have noticed he was using the OSS driver.
In your opinion, is the OSS radeon driver itself so bad?

You've got a definite problem with people disagreeing with your opinion,
and in some cases there are people who don't have a choice about what
laptop they receive from the boss! Be realistic, and if you don't want
to support AMD GPUs AT ALL, then state so openly in the enlightenment
documentation! Don't say it's officially supported but then come down
hard on anyone who calls you on it, that's not just being childish, it's
being downright dishonest. And you're baiting flamewars by not coming
out on the position officially.

So, yeah, FGLRX sucks, we all agree, and nobody who asks your help uses
it anymore. Done. Write it up that E will never be supported on FGLRX,
that way complaints about it stop. Easy as that.

Now as for the OSS driver, if, in fact, there is a bug in the radeon
code, THAT IS WORTH INVESTIGATING! Whether the bug is on your side, or
radeon's side! By jumping down people's throats whenever they ask for
help using the OSS driver, you're not just discouraging people from
using E, you're also potentially throwing away a good opportunity for
the radeon guys to find bugs in their code if it's not in yours!

Yes, you're a genius writing E, and we all appreciate the work you've
done on it, but your attitude with people coming to the user's mailing
list asking for help with a legitimate complaint about a bug with all
OSS software and drivers is dowright hostile! If you want to be mean to
people, join a boxing or martial arts club, you'll get all that hatred
out of your system there and maybe, just maybe, you'll find the internet
has one less enraged project leader.

I'm not saying people yelling at you is fun and should be tolerated, but
reading through this particular topic I've not seen any particularly
hostile attacks on you or your code beyond the fact that there's a bug
when using the OSS radeon driver. If you can't accept that even 'O great
master raster' occasionally has bugs in his code, or that other projects
do and that E doesn't handle them as gracefully as KDE or Gnome, well,
that's another problem, but not one I expect to be realistic since
you've had a rather civilized and efficient team helping you with E for
a long time.

*rant against hate in my inbox over*

p.s. i never said the gpu's were bad. you really should read better. i said
it's a bad idea to have an ati gpu. the gpu begets the drivers which beget a

that, even given personal experience to the tune of having wasted my own
personal $3000 (not company money) on a machine not that far back, and the
 fact
that i have actively practiced my solution to the problem (avoided ati gpus)
 for
years, and it's worked wonders for me.

p.p.s. a radeon 7850 is a desktop model gpu. read the original mail. the 7850m
is the mobile version for laptops (normally). sure - he could have been loose

 the
gpu was not easily replaceable and the information given indicates it could

Try going to your ~/.local/share/applications folder and see if the
programs with missing icons have entries there. If yes, delete them.

That or edit the .desktop files to point to an existing icon on the

ok, I can't tell you what's in DR17, but I don't think it'll be epplets.
That's what the ELF are for, to replace it all. Next, I don't think
anyone can even begin to make a guesstimate of when DR17 will be
released. As of now, I don't know of any development happening on e17,
most of the coders' time goes into the various libs. When work does

Personally I like it, but then again I've been a RH user since at least

been the removal of things like E and mp3 playback. At least the latter
is taken care of by several of the 3rd party apt/yum repositories. The
former unfortunately hasn't been resolved and I don't have the bandwidth
to provide a small repository with packages that don't make it into the
other reps.

-Andy-

To create a repository with packages other reps don't have, get a free
website hosting... I dunno if your ISP gives you a webstorage space, but
you can get some for free, at least on a french website like
multimania.com. it's affiliated to lycos, and you get 50 Megs free, the
only thing is you have popups added to your html pages... the trick is
not to put any html up... and you get a webdirectory which makes
everybody happy, including apt, unless I misunderstand how apt works.
Still, you might consider that, and I'd be happy to help you set up the
website if you can make the files for the repository.

Hi all,
I was just wondering if anybody had the same problem...
After every menu regeneration completes, E seems to have a problem with
the menus... and even if the apps menu opens properly, the settings and
enlightenment menu open with a blurry background and the items are
scrambled...
Plus the applications I want to start through the apps menu don't launch
at all, nor any action, I have to use the keyboard shortcuts to log out
and then back in for E to work right... If someone has an explanation
and/or a patch to fix this, I'll gladly update. I'm running E 16.6
release 1 on a laptop with RH9 and a custom compiled kernel. I have to
use the VESA driver due to an incompatibility of X and my graphics
chipset, but I have no other problems aside from that. Thanks for the
feedback,
John C.

I don't have such problems. First we'd like to better understand your
system. So I'd like you to answer the following:
(1) Your version of E is enlightenment-0.16.6-1.rh9, right? just to
  confirm!

I confirm, I got it off sourceforge.net

(2) What graphics chipset do you have?

it's an ATI IGP 320M, aka radeon mobility u1, for the moment it only
works with the VGA or VESA driver. I use the VESA in 1024x768 in 24 bits
with XFree 4.3.0-2 from redhat, until the 4.4 is released, but it
shouldn't have that much of an impact on E I think...

(3) Why did you compile your default kernel? What feature(s) did you add
  to it?

I compiled it to include the agp support of the damn chipset into it as
well as the acpi functionality. Otherwise it's the default redhat config
file I found in /boot/
Do you want a copy of it? I'm using an HP Pavilion ZE4400 customised...

Maybe the answers could help find a solution.

the menus... and even if the apps menu opens properly, the settings and

scrambled...

With kind regards,

Didier.

Re: [e-users] Loading of special fonts for new 16.6 themes?

2003-11-16 Thread John C
question, is there any specific configuration file to edit to have
access to the fonts I just extracted from the tarball?
Thanks for posting the themes and fonts, but I'm not quite sure I know
how to have access to the fonts, although I know E will find the themes
right away...
Thanks, John C.

Re: [e-users] Sound and sound events in Enlightenment

2003-11-11 Thread John C
Well, to be honest, I would like to have sounds in E, but the thing is
the sounds in the current themes are a little annoying to me, but I like
the idea of having sounds. Maybe making it an extra package with a
configuration window independent from the theme would be a good idea.
If I could define my own sounds, you can be sure I'd have'em on.
So, if this makes the download smaller, maybe you want to think about
it. Some sort of separate sound theming option or program? Like the e
menu and key editors maybe, that would be the best shot, I'd say.
Thanks for asking and improving E all the time!
John C.

How many people have sound events enabled in Enlightenment ?? If you

for people who *want* sound events or have purposely enabled them.

There's a discussion going on in regards to reducing the size of E's
download and this feature is one thing that's been brought up...

Hall

[e-users] E-Slides not staying on desktop and crashes E

2003-10-05 Thread John C
Hi everybody
I really love enlightenment, I used it in 1998, I still use it now...
However, since I reinstalled linux recently on m new machine, I have a
little problem...
When E-Slides is open on all of my 8 desktops, and I scroll back up to
the first one, I can be sure e will crash when I reach the first one. If
I close all E-Slides, this doesn't happen.
And if I don't close E-Slides, when logging in after E crashed, the
E-Slides epplets are all on top of each other on the first desktop...
I searched the archives and found a notice that recommends downloading
the latest version of some library from CVS, unfortunately I don't know
how to use CVS.
Does anyone know where I could find a tarball correcting the problem, or
if there is some configuration file to be modified?
I run E from the rh9 rpm from sourceforge, the 0.16.6-pre7. I downloaded
and installed the epplet-base 0.5 from sourceforge as well.
I hope anyone can come up with another solution than CVS, as I don't
have much time to spend on learning how to use it...

Cheers, and thanks for any replies...
