It's just that an acquaintance of mine sent an email here and it never

 For the non lazy:
For a while now I've been maintaining github mirrors for the efl,
elementary and enlightenment, and Boris has been maintaining a mirror of
terminology. The e* mirrors are updated once an hour, and the
terminology mirror is updated by Boris on every push he makes.

I know some people prefer using the github interface over the cgit/phab
one, and I know some people don't have commit access to the
enlightenment git and enjoy hosting their work on github before
submitting upstream. This move is meant to make all of this easier.
Also, if you'd like your work to show in your github contributions map,
all you need to do is star or fork the repo (only then does github
 update the contribution list).

This is not an official mirror. We are not migrating to github. Don't
report bugs there. Don't create pull requests. Phab is still king.

Why not disable Issues for the repos?

Oh hey. I have the list issue you mentioned too... Only I'm on git.

I don't know if it'll be any help, but have you tried mpv?

Got it.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried triple buffering and it does create
bad
  artifacts.

quite possible. but did you look at the difference in cpu usage?
switching to
pager plain instead of pager as a module will reduce the render area IF
you had
 partial rendering...

So I understand the theory you just explained, but practise disagrees.

New snapshot pager:
e19 idles around 8% CPU
mplayer with e19 in opengl rendering: 16% CPU
mplayer with e19 in software rendering: 12% CPU

Old non snapshotting pager:
e19 idles around 1% CPU
mplayer with e19 in opengl rendering: 10% CPU
mplayer with e19 in software rendering: 5% CPU

So whatever OpenGL e19 is doing, it's taking a lot more CPU to use my GPU
than software rendering.
Does that make sense?

Also, disabling the snapshotting pager made a huge difference, especially
for e19 at idle.

Just for reference, mplayer was using 3% CPU to play my video, so I was a
bit upset when e19 was using 10-15%, i.e. 3 to 5x more CPU than mplayer,
to display it.

One other things I was thinking about. I have 3 virtual screens. With the
snapshotting pager, it has to render my 2 other screens to put them in the
pager. Without it, it doesn't have to render the 2 non visible screens,
correct?
If so, that would explain the big savings I'm seeing.

Engine: OpenGL (I may try software rendering again, it somehow looked
faster
  on my quadcore CPU)
  Tear-free: disabled
  Texture from pixmap: enabled
  Swapping method: autho

you really want tear-free. really. disabling this is just doing yourself a
 disservice. :)

Thanks, I turned tear free back on.

X-messages: send flush and send dump enabled

Hopefully these are decent options for reduced CPU/GPU load.
It would be awesome if you had a preset like the old E where you could
say
low power system and it would dial down anything known expensive, but
in
the meantime, I very much appreciate your direct help :)

you have a quad core system... not a low power thing. :)

If you make my laptop warm, spin up its fans, and half its battery life,
we're not going to be friends though ;)

Anyway, looks like using software rendering and disabling the snapshotting
pager made things much better.
Thanks for your help.

Now, I still have a bug I haven't pinned down yet:
On occasion, e19 will unminimize a window (take it from the list of
minimized windows and display it in full) when I close an e dialog or
minimize another window. Quite strange.

yes - that is a chrome tooltip window and chrome internally deadlocks. that
window is an override-redirect window (bypasses wm management) and thus
 the wm
isn't involved in that tooltip window at all beyond compositing it
 (displaying
the pixels), which e does properly. rendering is up to chrome and chrome
 simply
internally deadlocks itself. wm isn't invovled. i can only assume chromes

 something
different here and using an untested codepath and locking itself. there is
nothing we can do as the wm isn't being involved in this deadlock -
 chromium
isn't asking something of the wm then stopping and waiting for a reply
 (that we
don't give). it's doing this inside of itself. you really need to file bug
reports with the chrome devs here.

[e-users] Battery Monitor Gadget

2014-10-29 Thread Yomi Ogunwumi
Yesterday, I decided it would be a better idea to have my laptop suspend
when it reached 10% battery power; rather than have it shutoff without too
much warning. Once the battery reached 10% it suspended, but then I
couldn't figure how to wake it up again, even after plugging in the charger
or closing and opening the lid.

Usually when I manually suspend, I just open the lid and I'm greeted with
E's lock screen.

So, how do I wake up my laptop when I have E suspend it once the battery
reaches a certain percentage?

[e-users] Learning about E, EFL, etc.

2014-09-21 Thread Yomi Ogunwumi
Hello. As some of you might know, I usually handle triaging some of the
issues opened on our phabricator instance.

Lately I've just about stopped for two reasons,
1. I'm a bit busier.
2. I read the issues and I have no idea where to put them.

It's occurred to me that I sometimes don't know enough about Enlightenment
or EFL to know where to accurately place the issues.

At other times, it the issue sounds like it might be a major problem, but
is only affecting one particular user at the time.

For example, T1573 → https://phab.enlightenment.org/T1537

I thought it must have been a feature request, not knowing that
Enlightenment is EWHM compliant. (or was until now)

So, I'd like to get to know more about the project, so then I can triage a
little more effectively.

defaults.

I have no idea which font E is using right now...but it looks good in some

Anybody have a few fonts that work well for most applications?

I was also thinking Why don't applications default to use certain fonts,
if they're allowed to (setting Fonts Settings to Enable Custom Font Classes
→ Applications), but not selecting a font.

Although, that seems to revert back to normal after closing the dialogue.

I figure it would be better to have the application decide which font to
use, at least for me.

I've asked in #e a few times, but I figured I might as well have an

After switching to E awhile ago, one of things I missed was having a

IIRC, raster mentioned something about code being in place for that or
something to that effect, but I don't remember what he said exactly.

I know getting this merged into enlightenment would take awhile, so maybe I
could use something like feh to mimic it?

Wednesday, June 4th — 9.57am

I think Finding memory problems with valgrind in Debugging needs to be
rewritten.

Yesterday I was using it to attempt to provide useful information for T1315
and T1277. I followed it, but when it gets to launching another X Server
and starting enlightenment, everything started to fall apart. The X Server
starts, but trying to run E on it failed for me, all I got was a black
screen and a cursor.

* You don't need to run valgrind separately.
* It never covers the options of `enlightenment` or `enlightenment_start`.
* Assumes that the reader/user is looking for memory problems by default.

I'd make the (limited) changes myself, but I want to know if anyone else
had anything to say. I don't know what else I'd add, as I'm not really well
versed with debugging.

Also, does anyone know how to kill an X Server started with sudo X -ac :1 ?
htop doesn't seem to help.

[e-users] The need for Entrance

2014-06-15 Thread Yomi Ogunwumi
I think it's been brought up twice before but, I've been thinking about it
for awhile now...Why do we have Entrance?

It's an EFL based Display Manager and allows you to log into your system,
etc...but was it really necessary to create it?

LightDM exists and AFAICT, it's meant to work cross-desktop...
I'm no developer, but feel free to tell me if it would/should be easier or
why it might not work.

Aside : Lots of things are duplicated. Gnome and KDE both have their own
display managers. Gnome has gEdit and KDE has Kate.

First a disclaimer: I Love Enlightenment and use it as my main
workstation OS. While I only started using it full-time last year, I
have been following it's development since 1997. As things stand, I
would not want to use another system.

The ugly and awful truth from my perspective: yes, Enlightenment is
ugly. However, ugly is misinterpreted as awful. Compounding the problem
is that Enlightenment is extraordinarily complex. I would venture to
guess that easily 99% of people who try Enlightenment give up on it
after less than two-hours. As all distros\WMs\DEs have a strong tendency
to troll one another to different degrees, users in all groups
universally troll against Enlightenment. I see it almost everyday.

What is the difference with me? I could not possibly care less about the
aesthetics of a user interface. It is what I can do with it that counts
 - how I can arrange my workflow. In that respect, Enlightenment is the
most powerful environment available. My most favorite features is the
ability to tell one of my displays to be a tiling WM. It is not merely
the ability but the incredibly well thought out way it is designed. Of
course, if you are a new user, you may never know the functionality
exists since one must (comparatively) dig through a mountain of settings
to find it. There are numerous other interface features to Enlightenment
that I love, and when made to work together simply cannot be found
anywhere else - not even close. But the settings are another barrier to
entry. If you are not immediately turned off by Enlightenment's looks,
browsing through the settings will send most running. When everything is
approached at once through the settings panel, for many it is like
trying to chisel a tunnel through the moon with a hammer. Some of the
best settings are labeled in non-intuitive ways, and so are never
explored. To this day, there are settings that even I don't know what
they do. I fully appreciate why that may not be apparent to developers
 and long time users.

I have long played with the thought that perhaps there should be a
secondary, not so super-scary version of Enlightenment for regular
Linux users. This would have to have a default interface with highly
refined aesthetics and functional defaults. It would also have to
utterly gut the settings panel, of... most things. Basically a stupid
version of Enlightenment. I think it could actually be popular, but I do
not feel it is my place to champion such an idea. Further, it would
double the complexity of development, and I want to make sure *MY* ugly,
super-complicated, ultra-functional version of Enlightenment continues
to exist. I LOVE it the way it is. So I suppose I am actually against
the idea. Just the other day, I was on the elementary OS (polar opposite
of Enlightenment) Google+ board where I am very active since that's the
distro I put on other peoples computers. We were discussing the upcoming
tiling windows manager plugin for elementary OS. I mentioned that I use
Bodhi and briefly discussed its tiling feature. Of course, the hate
descended. My next to the last post on the matter reads as follows and I
 think is most poignant:

This is true. However, I care absolutely nothing about aesthetics. ( I
was desensitized after working with mainframes a long time ago) So in my
case, ugliness does not interfere with my user experience as it does
with others, and I don't mind extreme configuration. If elementary OS
was extremely ugly but otherwise had the interface features I like about
it, I would still love it just as much. Although I would not recommend
it, let only install it on other peoples computers as I otherwise do.
Much the same, I never ever recommend Bodhi or Enlightenment in general
 to anyone under any circumstances.

 You asked,

 William

Re: [e-users] segfault with enlightenment-0.18.8 and spotify/chrome

2014-05-22 Thread Yomi Ogunwumi
You'll want to read some of this,
https://phab.enlightenment.org/w/debugging/#debugging-using-gdb

Read through the debugging with gdb section.

Recompile with debugging symbols and then once your able to get
enlightenment to crash, don't click recover, switch to a virtual terminal
via Ctrl + Alt + F6, login, then run the commands from the Debugging guide.

After you get the back trace, head over to phab.enlightenment.org create a
account if you don't already have one and a new task in Maniphest.

After upgrading Ubuntu to 14.04, i got impatient waiting for a
packaged E-18 and compiled enlightenment-0.18.7 myself. I did,
however, have an odd problem whenever i started the spotify client: E
would segfault. On the rare occasion E has segfaulted in the past,
pressing F1 to resume has always worked. Now, though, it continued to
segfault every time after redrawing all windows. The only option left
was to press F12 to log out.

Fast forward to this week... I compiled efl and elementary 1.9.4,
noticed there was an 0.18.8 version of enlightenment, too, so also
compiled that. Coincidentally, while logging out and back in again, I
noticed there were a large number of updates to Ubuntu packages,
including a new version of spotify. So with new enlightenment and new
spotify, i decided to try again, but had the same result: segfault,
followed by F1 not working and having to log out.

I noticed that as spotify starts up, a window is drawn and quickly
disappears before i can see its contents. Then the main window
appears, and just before all of the pictures, buttons, etc. show up, E
segfaults. After i press F1, i even have time to press the play
button to start music playing before E segfaults again.

Just before i attempted to run spotify, i also noticed a pop-up
notification from chrome (new email) was badly drawn: the bottom half
of the pop-up was black. I didn't think much of it, until after the
segfault, but it's quite possible chrome also got updated. I logged
out, and back in again, fired up chrome to write this email, and some
time after chrome started i again got a new email notification. This
time the pop-up didn't appear at all, but E threw another segfault at
the exact moment it would have (i could tell the timing because gmail
on my phone usually chimes at almost the same time the pop-up
appears). F1 didn't help again, E segfaulted almost immediately. But
in between i noticed a new, borderless window had appeared in the top,
left corner of the screen: a dark grey square with a small bell icon.
In the second or so between pressing F1 and the next segfault i was
able to click on this icon and see that it was for chrome's
 notification settings.

 tl;dr : E is segfaulting whenever chrome tries to draw a pop-up
window, or whenever i open spotify (which may involve drawing a window
i never get to see). Pressing F1 doesn't help, E will just crash again
 moments later.

The crash notification window mentions attaching gdb to the process,
or possibly recompiling E with certain compiler flags. I could do
either, or both, but i don't know what i'd be looking for. Would
anyone have some minimal instructions to track down what's causing
 these crashes?
