Nothing really in any of the logs that sheds light on what may be wrong
After further investigation I found the Apache php7_module seems to have has 
disappeared during the upgrade . I fixed the issue on this one server by 
following the instructions from here 
https://www.vultr.com/docs/how-to-install-and-configure-php-70-or-php-71-on-ubuntu-16-04
 which fixed the issue

I just upgraded another server, and and have found a similar issue. This
time the php7_module is there (although the version of php is now 7.2) ,
but the website is down with now indication as to what is wrong

  * Merge with Debian unstable (LP: #1751286). Remaining changes:
- Add additional dep8 tests.
- Use snakeoil certificates.
- Add an example refresh pattern for debs.

- Enable autoreconf. This is no longer required for the security updates,
  but is needed for the seddery of test-suite/Makefile.am in

- Drop Conflicts/Replaces of squid against squid3. In Ubuntu, the migration

- Drop wrong short-circuiting of various invocations; we always want to

  + d/rules: don't error when hitting the "deprecated" and
   "format-truncation" gcc7 warnings. Upstream 3.5.27 has fixes for these,
   but one in Format.cc that affects 32bit builds was deemed too intrusive
   for the 3.5 stable series and is only in squid 4.x

- debian/VERSION.patch: Update vendor string to "Ubuntu".
- debian/smb.conf;
  + Add "(Samba, Ubuntu)" to server string.
  + Comment out the default [homes] share, and add a comment about
"valid users = %s" to show users how to restrict access to
\\server\username to only username.
- debian/samba-common.config:
  + Do not change priority to high if dhclient3 is installed.
- Add apport hook:
  + Created debian/source_samba.py.
  + debian/rules, debian/samba-common-bin.install: install hook.
- Add extra DEP8 tests to samba (LP #1696823):
  + d/t/control, d/t/cifs-share-access: access a file in a share using cifs
  + d/t/control, d/t/smbclient-anonymous-share-list: list available shares
anonymously
  + d/t/control, d/t/smbclient-authenticated-share-list: list available
shares using an authenticated connection
  + d/t/control, d/t/smbclient-share-access: create a share and download a
file from it
- d/samba-common.dhcp: If systemctl is available, use it to query the
  status of the smbd service before trying to reload it. Otherwise,
  keep the same check as before and reload the service based on the
  existence of the initscript. (LP #1579597)
- d/control, d/rules: Disable glusterfs support because it's not in main.

This bug affects Samba 4.3.11 as provided in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

Smbstatus does not display correct information for users connected to my
server.

This information is known to Samba as it is indeed correctly logged in
samba audit module, which I have enabled and the log does show the
correct username, group and host.

Here is an example of wrong smbstatus output:

If I read the issue correctly, this has already been patched and fixed
upstream in in Samba 4.4.0 and higher

Ubuntu 17.10 appears to aggressively trigger Samba bug 10541 (
https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10541 ). Previous versions of
Ubuntu worked fine, but 17.10 appears to request quota information on
every write, resulting in a complete inability to write to files.

Remote Samba share is mounted as cifs as read-write, and has been
working for years and many software releases. Unable to write/create
files from bash, from GUI file browser, or even from a Windows VM with
access to the mounted location. I haven't seen any scenario where Ubuntu
17.10 can write to the share.

Server is running Samba 4.7.3 with a long-running good configuration.

Every write request from my Ubuntu desktop results in the following
server log:

[2017/12/02 16:44:25.306674,  0] ../source3/lib/sysquotas.c:461(sys_get_quota)
  sys_path_to_bdev() failed for path [.]!

There are no other log entries.

The root bug appears to be in Samba, but recent changes to Ubuntu have
triggered the bug in a way that breaks write functionality.
