[EPEL-devel] Re: Recoll for EPEL ?

2017-04-28 Thread Karel Volný

Hi,

...

No problem for helping with testing and solving issues, ...

ok, so now let's move from talk to action :-)

Paolo prepared the package already and it'd be nice if Recoll users could
test it and add karma:

https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-EPEL-2017-ede90eda56

also, you might become EPEL packager yourself :-)

Yes, but really, developpers and package maintainers have different sets of
competences, and I know that I have a very hard time switching between the
roles. Memory not good enough. It's one thing to whip up a set of working
packages, another to make sure that they are correct and in accordance with
the distribution standards.

sure, different people have different approaches, and I absolutely
understand the argument about switching contexts, that's my weak spot too
(and of course lack of time)

- but it never hurts to remind that the possibility is here (for anyone,
not just the project programmer but any skilful user)

I initially packaged recoll for EPEL6 as a favor to a colleague of mine
that was using RHEL6 at the time. I have never upgraded the package to
RHEL7, but I can do that if there is request. I've now requested
creation of the EPEL7 branch.

Thanks,

Paolo

In this case, what we need is someone to build a set of packages that
have already been set up for distribution standards. After that it
needs to have the package bugs fed to the developer so they can either
mitigate, fix or can them. Normally this can be the hardest part
because the developer is unaware of what the users are wanting to do.

I will attempt to work with the EPEL maintainer to fire off builds
from the Fedora branch. This will allow them to get into the various
EPEL-testing trees so that it can be seen what next steps are needed.

I understand the buried issue.

I wrote to the Fedora maintainer first of course, and he does not wish to
do EPEL packaging, hence my email to the list.

No problem for helping with testing and solving issues, and I always make
sure that distribution-specific patches (usually small build
compiler-related issues) get into the main code as soon as possible.
