[EVDL] EVLN: Public shaming used as a tool to stop icing of EV spots

If you are parked illegally or taking up two spaces instead of one your handiwork just might end up on Facebook. Two Ottawa men have launched Bad Parking Ottawa – a place where people can post pictures of bad parking. “It’s like, hey, listen. We saw you. You’ve been spotted. You’re on social media now,” says Ben Martel. “A lot of people will see you and hopefully you won’t be doing it again.” Martel set up Bad Parking Ottawa with his friend Glen Caswell. One of their concerns was the relatively recent habit of people with gas-powered vehicles parking in spaces reserved for electric cars. But bad parking is nothing new. If the threat of parking tickets or even being towed hasn’t curbed it, perhaps a little public shaming might. Similar sites are used in other cities. And this latest Facebook page joins the Twitter account Fail Park Ottawa @failpark_yow which began in 2010. With its bulbous, van-like body, the Nimbus E-Car concept looks like the modern successor to the old VW. According to Gas 2, the E-Car was created by Brazilian artist Eduardo Galvani, and was designed to be constructed out of lightweight carbon fiber, aluminum, and titanium. Power comes from a 130-kilowatt (180 horsepower) electric motor, and the E-Car features on-demand four-wheel drive. There’s also an onboard microgenerator for backup battery-pack charging. Unlike the spartan Volkswagen Microbus, the E-Car features plenty of modern technology, including a tablet-controlled infotainment system and plenty of outlets and USB ports for other devices. Brazil was the VW’s last stand; it went out of production there last year. Could the E-Car rise from its ashes and become the country’s new utility vehicle of choice, or will it remain an intriguing concept? The Nimbus E-Car concept is designed to be constructed out of lightweight carbon fiber, aluminum, and titanium for greater efficiency. Further, the concept sports panoramic windows all around for optimal photography on the go, while offering on-demand 4 wheel drive, roof-top solar panels, and regenerative braking to keep the batteries charged up, no matter where your adventures take you. Speaking of batteries, the E-Car’s power comes from a 130 kW (180 hp) electric motor to keep things moving forward briskly – and there’s also an on board micro-generator to make sure you get home from Machu Pichu in time for the next World Cup match. If you don’t make it home in time, however, that won’t be a problem, sine the Nimbus has plenty of conveniences for today’s tech-savvy drivers, including an on board wifi hub, lots of USB ports, and power outlets feeding the tablet mounted in the center console. In addition to being an entertainment system, the Nimbus’ tablet controls the car’s audio system, lighting, temp control and navigational information. It also contains a digital inclinometer, altimeter and weather station. My old Irish grandmother would say that this car has a face only a mother could love, but I think it is. Just. Too. Cute. I want one! Excellent points. All renewable installations have to have this sort of accounting. Building for peak use is often unreasonable. The smart EV driver who understands the real value-promise of EV's where they do best (overnight charging and daily use) actually looks for the smallest battery that meets their routine needs, not the biggest. For example, is it worth an extra $26,000 to be able to go an extra 57 miles between charges on the highway? Example, A weekly trip from Washington DC to say New York city (226 mi) in a 85kw car (265 mi range) will not need to charge along the way in good weather, but will need to charge immediately on arrival. The driver of a 60 kW battery (208 mi) would have to charge once along the way for say 20 minutes but then not have to stress over finding a charger immediately on arrival. His cost? An extra 30 minutes. At 52 trips a year, (52 hours of charging along the way) works out to be a cost of $500 per hour. Of course this goes down the longer one owns the car, but paying an extra $1000 per charge to save 30 minutes once a week is not economical to many people. Sure, to those that can afford it, the price is insignificant , but they are not the ones who will be the primary purchasers of mass EV's. I can agree with this statement: The smart EV driver who understands the real value-promise of EV's where they do best (overnight charging and daily use) actually looks for the smallest battery that meets their routine needs, not the biggest but the rest of your argument is pretty fanciful. The smart EV driver would buy a leaf for $32,000 or a Smart ED for $25,700 and spend $40 a week to rent an ICE car for their Washington to NY trip instead of spending $40,000 extra for the Model S and having to cool their heels at some truck stop (in both directions) waiting for their car to charge. Or even better, take the train and get a lot of work or rest done on the trip. Washington to NYC is one of the worst drives in this country. --Rick On 07/08/2014 11:05 AM, Robert Bruninga via EV wrote: I don't know if your metric is the right one to use, but for the Tesla, I think that using the 85 kWh battery as a more robust solution is what I would use. On Tue, 8 Jul 2014, Rick Beebe via EV wrote: The smart EV driver would buy a leaf for $32,000 or a Smart ED for $25,700 and spend $40 a week to rent an ICE car for their Washington to NY trip instead of spending $40,000 extra for the Model S and having to cool their heels at some truck stop (in both directions) waiting for their car to charge. Or even better, take the train and get a lot of work or rest done on the trip. Washington to NYC is one of the worst drives in this country. This is exactly what I do. When I got my Leaf three years ago, I got rid of my old ICE vehicle. I don't have to pay to register, insure, or maintain a second vehicle. Budget rent-a-car has a deal that allows me to register and pay for a car over the internet and pick it up at the San Jose, CA airport. The weekend rate is $20 per day. I also pay $11 per day to park at an off-site parking lot with a shuttle. There is another advantage to this. If something happens to the car while I'm far from home, I can call Budget. They will give me another car to complete my trip and I presume will take care of getting the original one fixed. If I did this in my own car, I would have to arrange to get it fixed, and arrange for another car while it was being fixed. I would also need to alter my trip plans to return the other car and get my car back. This convenience is definitely worth $31 per day to me. Even if my Leaf had 200 mile range, I wouldn't use it for such trips. To: ev@lists.evdl.org Date: Monday, July 7, 2014, 10:53 AM With a little help from my friends, I am corrected: according to http://www.nissanusa.com/electric-cars/leaf/charging-range/range/ The Nissan LEAF® can get you 84 miles on a single charge. [*] Speed, topography, load, and accessory use can significantly affect the estimated range. So, recalculating the list using 84 miles @ $3200 for the Leaf EV: Leaf: ~381 (=32000/84) i3: ~511 (=43000/81) Tesla-S: ~337 (=7/208) The Tesla Model-S is still the overall better deal using my funny-numbers above, and the Leaf is still the better lower-purchase-cost deal. I hope everyone realizes that range figures are a moving target (everyone's range will vary). The mynissanleaf.com forum had a chart that showed some speed to range ratios that some might find interesting: http://www.smidgeindustriesltd.com/leafrangewithtesla.gif But I stuck with using the EPA numbers for each EV, not because I believe the EPA range is fact, but to compare apples with apples. {brucedp.150m.com} On Mon, Jul 7, 2014, at 09:21 AM, Jamie K via EV wrote: Note that the LEAF is currently rated at 84 mile EPA range, not 75.
