I had one which ran on two AA batteries 50 years ago, but, Marton I
suspect your speaking of a somewhat larger one? That won't fit on a

Interior of the 2014 BMW i3
]

2014 BMW i3

Price: $44,950 after Ontario rebate $36,450
Engine: Electric traction motor
Power: 170 hp /torque:184 lb.-ft.
Competition: Ford Focus Electric, Nissan Leaf, Chevy Volt [pih]
What’s best: bold design, roomy cabin, sustainable materials, perky drive

What’s worst: No impulsive road trips allowed
What’s interesting: i3 designed to attract people who have never considered
BMW before

Bold car travels up to 160 km under pure electric power

A botanist, Brian Gluckstein and Dr. Oz — I see room for all of them on a
new BMW think-tank. At the recent meet and greet for BMW’s fresh electric
car, the i3, plants, interior design and new-age living all loomed large.

We heard about the eucalyptus-clad dash, the evocative loft design and the
holistic approach to production of the i3. It’s as if the car was born on
the pages of Dwell magazine.

Enthusiasts hold BMW and its lineage of thrilling cars sacred. Sacred is one
thing, paralyzed is another, and BMW has no intention of being trapped by
the past. Look what happened to Kodak when it missed the digital revolution.

“We are prepared for a changing world,” was the mantra floating through the
situation room where journalists were briefed on all things i3.

And what a briefing it was: flip charts, spread sheets, apps, video,
testimonials. All very in depth and intense. If you’re pressed for time,
here’s my Twitter version:

Electric. Eclectic. Edgy i3. Goes fast. But not far.

And perhaps it doesn’t have to. BMW dove deep into “range anxiety” as it
developed the i3. They studied and scrutinized driving habits. Their
findings? The average commute of urbanists is 47 kilometres, well within the
range of the i3, which BMW says will go 130 to 160 kilometres under pure
electric power. Opt for the two-cylinder gas-powered range extender for
$4,000 and double the fun to about 300 kilometres.

The i3 starts at $44,950, but qualifies for an $8,500 rebate under the
provincial Electric Vehicle Incentive Program. Then get ready to customize.
Choose from one of three interior design versions: loft, lodge or suite.
Then pick finishes like you would for a condo, only try to get translations
first. Solaric leather, Cassia upholstery, Andesite silver metallic paint,
it’s a new electric lexicon.

That’s the thing about the i3, there are no tepid strokes. Inside and out,
it’s injected with flavour. The interior is an intriguing collision of
high-tech and organic surfaces.

From the driver’s seat the vibe reads airy spa. Eucalyptus wood curves over
the top of the dash. It’s splashed with so much light it’s like a raised bed
waiting to be planted with salad greens. Seats, doors, carpets and the roof
catalogue BMW’s commitment to using recycled and renewable raw materials.
Even the leather is treated humanely, tanned naturally with extract from
olive trees.

Our meet and greet included a short test drive on highways and country
roads. Enveloped in the passenger cabin — or life module as BMW calls it —
the comfort of the seats, the clear visibility and the roominess is
impressive. BMW says the i3 has the space of a 3 Series on a 1 Series
footprint.

Once underway, there’s nothing geeky about the way it drives. Power cranks
out earnestly from the 170 horsepower electric motor. The i3, relying on
carbon fibre-based plastic and aluminum for weight reduction, goes 0-100
km/h in 7.2 seconds, and the more important passing range of 80 to 120 km/h
in 4.9 seconds.

Lift your foot off the accelerator and the i3 slows down like it’s getting
hugged by a bear. That squeeze play is recharging the battery. Given more
hours behind the wheel, it’s likely you would develop some finesse in this
area.

The i3 is almost inseparable from your smartphone. BMW ConnectedDrive and
the i Remote app working with navigation allows for route planning to the
micro level of detail. If the destination is out of battery range, solutions
are suggested, like altering the route, the driving method,

[EVDL] EVLN: C$33.8k Leaf EV, modern but not too space-shippy

The Nissan Leaf EV may seem futuristic, but it looks, handles and is
starting to sell like a regular small car
By Mike Goetz August 12, 2014

]

2015 Nissan Leaf

• Type: Five-door, front-wheel-drive compact hatchback
• Engine: 80 kW AC electric motor with 24 kW Lithium-ion battery (equivalent
to 107 hp)

• Transmission: Automatic (single-speed gear reducer)
• Base price: $33,788

A lot of folks, on both sides of the consumer/automaker fence, don’t think
this electric-vehicle thing has legs.

Many automakers are sending mixed messages. Toyota has even announced that
it’s done selling pure EVs.

But you know what? New models keep showing up. The number of people buying
and considering them is rising (slowly, yes, but definitely rising). And EVs
remain one of the few surefire ways for automakers to achieve the very
strict fuel-efficiency regulations coming down the pike in the U.S.

Net result: EVs have put down serious roots. So it’s time to think of them
as less of a novelty and more as just another alternative that may or may
not fit your lifestyle.

In the compact or midsize categories, the EV that should be at the top of
your consideration list is the Nissan Leaf, first introduced in 2011.

With the Leaf, Nissan went out of its way to make non-believers comfortable,
with a modern (but not too space-shippy) exterior, and ride and handling
characteristics similar to what compact car drivers are used to.

Along the way, the company added a new, lower-priced base model and reduced
prices across the board by $3,000. It also gave the Leaf a faster charger,
which reduced 220-volt charge time to five hours from seven.

It took awhile to gain traction, but Nissan has now sold more than 125,000
Leafs around the world and is on pace to sell about 100 a month in Canada,
where Quebec is the best market by far. Alberta? Not so much.

While recently testing a 2015 model, I was again reminded how normal this
car feels. The only thing that separates it from similar gas-powered
hatchbacks is its silent running and above-average acceleration. The
electric motor offers the equivalent of 107 horsepower, but the instant and
full torque of electric propulsion translates into good jump whenever you
hammer the go-pedal.

EVs are pioneers in telematics, and the Leaf is no exception. Drivers can
use the Internet or a smartphone to control air conditioning, set charging
functions, and access data like the charge status of their rides.

Like the Leaf itself, it’s the future.

Market position

Designed to be an EV for both early adopters and mainstream compact car
buyers. Unlike its competitors, the Leaf was designed from the ground up as
an EV. It is now the global leader in EV sales, with a 45-per-cent market
share.

Points

• Maximum range of 135 km on a full charge
• Eight-year/160,000-km battery warranty
• Some provincial subsidies available for EV purchase
• Charge time (zero to full) takes 20 hours at 110 volts, 4 hours at 220
volts

• Drives and feels like a conventional compact

Safety features

Six airbags, ABS, traction and stability control, tire-pressure monitoring
system, anti-theft engine immobilizer, rear-view monitor, available
360-degree monitor.

Re: [EVDL] CALB bolt terminals getting hot -

2014-08-15 Thread Danpatgal via EV
I have on my to-do list to clean up the connections. With the BMS modules on
there it's just a pain and I have to be very careful (I know - if I had done
it at the beginning ...).

I noticed the temperature first while driving from the BMS (Lithimate Lite)
telling me one cell was getting over 40C. What was odd was I still got it
on a cooler day (in the 70s), so it made me suspect the connections. So I
checked a few of the bolt heads with my fingers for comparisons and noticed
a few much warmer than others (none hot to the touch, just very warm
instead of just warm or cool). I used the laser temperature gun just for
some idea on the number ... and my fingers didn't lie ;). Those few were
4-5 C (10-12 F) warmer than the rest.

I don't want to make a mountain out of a molehill, just wondered if there
might be others having similar issues with CALBs that I should be aware of
(bolts, straps, terminals ...) other than just a layer of corrosion on the
terminals.

Thanks for the comments - Dan
