[EVDL] Motor Temp
Does anyone know the max safe operating temp of the Azure AC24L Motor. The manual say Maximum Operation Temperature 55c but I assume this is ambient air temp and not the motor. I have put a temp relay on the case and have a fan turn on to help cool but do not know at what temp this should come on. [EVDL] EVLN: 'When I drive my EV, I'm only using domestic energy' r:70mi
Driving a Smart Fortwo electric car is fun r:70mi http://www.gainesville.com/article/20140907/COLUMNISTS/140909763?tc=ar Getting a charge from electric cars By Nathan Crabbe September 7, 2014 Driving a Smart Fortwo electric car is fun, but somewhat stressful when you're barrelling down U.S. 441 in a vehicle that is less than nine feet long. It's also a little nerve-racking given that the car's owner, Doug Jones, was nice enough to let me drive. I didn't want to repay the favor by swerving onto Paynes Prairie. Jones, an Archer city commissioner, can hardly contain his enthusiasm about electric cars. He can recite a long list of benefits to owning an electric vehicle (EV), from cutting emissions to surprisingly competitive economics. But he admits that one of his favorite benefits is the car's subconscious Jetsons fun factor, meaning that it is a joy for him and others to drive. They may be skittish about the size of my vehicle, but everybody is curious about driving an electric car, he said. The big downside of the Smart Fortwo is its 70-mile range on a full charge, similar to other EVs. Jones works from home in health-care IT, so the car is well suited for the occasional trip into Gainesville. But the lack of local charging stations can be irksome. There are about a half-dozen public charging stations in Gainesville, in addition to those located at dealerships. If Gainesville wants to encourage the use of EVs, expanding the number of charging stations though new incentives or requirements on developers is essential. On a state and federal level, tax incentives have boosted the number of electric-car owners. The federal government provides an income-tax credit of up to $7,500. For Jones, that improved the economics of buying a two-seat car for about $27,200. He took the option of renting the battery, which knocked another $5,000 off the list price. He's leasing the car for $175 a month, pays about $25 a month for electricity to charge it, and doesn't face expenses such as oil changes. Some states have created additional incentives. Georgia provides an up to $5,000 tax credit, which has helped propel Atlanta into being a leader in EV ownership. But some conservative lawmakers have tried to kill the credit. It's reasonable to object to subsidizing the purchase of higher-end EVs such as the Tesla Model S, which has a list price of $70,000 or more. But EVs provide societal benefits by improving air quality and cutting the emissions that contribute to climate change. A study by the Union of Concerned Scientists found that even when electricity is produced mostly from coal, EVs result in lower emissions than the average compact gasoline-powered vehicle. Those benefits only increase as coal-fired plants are shuttered and alternative energy sources embraced. As an electric-care advocate recently said on National Public Radio, It's the only car that you can buy that gets cleaner as it gets older. It's food for thought in a town that has placed a big bet on a biomass plant. Perhaps Gainesville Regional Utilities might provide lower rates to EV owners, especially if it could be shown to encourage greater local energy use and benefit all ratepayers. There certainly is something appealing about using local sources to power both our homes and cars. As Jones proudly says, When I drive, I'm only using domestic energy. [EVDL] EVLN: Yamaha's leaning electric trike
http://www.autoblog.com/2014/09/07/yamaha-electric-leaning-trike-patent/ Yamaha considering electric leaning trike? By Chris Bruce Sep 7th 2014 [images / The US Patent and Trademark Office http://o.aolcdn.com/dims-shared/dims3/GLOB/crop/796x549+0+13/resize/628x433!/format/jpg/quality/85/http://o.aolcdn.com/hss/storage/midas/7771cdbd068b57889d5f9f4a633aec88/200693446/Yamaha-Three-Wheel-Trike-Patent-001.jpg http://www.autoblog.com/photos/yamaha-three-wheel-trike-patent-images/ ] Recent patent filings appear to indicate that Yamaha might be thinking about bringing a leaning, three-wheeled electric scooter to the US. While the idea of a trike cycle is hardly new – after all Yamaha already has its own Tricity – this one would have its dual wheels in the back with each one powered by its own electric motor. According to Visor Down, the Japanese company submitted for an application on the same vehicle in Europe, as well. The US patent application describes this vehicle as a two-rear-wheel electric vehicle configured to lean a vehicle body frame thereof when turning. It's not clear exactly how much power its electric motors would produce, but the design appears to be quite similar to the Yamaha EC-03 electric scooter that's already available in Europe, according to Visor Down. That little cycle uses an electric motor with 1.88 horsepower and 7.08 pound-feet of torque to power its single, rear wheel, but it weighs just 123.5 pounds. According to the document from the US Patent and Trademark Office, Yamaha seems to have been working on this concept for a little while. The application says that it first filed for patents on this idea years ago. However, the US only received the documents recently, and they were published in late August. That might indicate that the company is serious about bringing this electric trike to market here. If you really want all of the details about Yamaha's patent, it can be viewed as a PDF, here. [© autoblog.com] http://www.visordown.com/motorcycle-news-new-bikes/yamaha-files-patents-for-leaning-electric-trike/25463.html Yamaha files patents for leaning electric trike 1 September 2014 Patent diagrams closely resemble EC-03 currently on sale in Europe YAMAHA has filed patents with the European and U.S. Patent Office for a leaning electric three-wheeler. Scooters like the Piaggio MP3 and Yamaha’s Tricity have two wheels at the front and a third wheel at the rear - this scooter will get a conventional single front wheel and two rear wheels, each powered by an electric hub motor. The patents focus on the electric motor controller and decreasing the weight of the battery and extra wheel. The diagrams show a scooter that closely resembles the Yamaha EC-03 electric scooter, currently on sale in Europe for £1,199. It looks to share the same front end, frame, seat and battery location as the EC-03, but uses an extra wheel and swingarm, and a design allowing it to lean. The two-wheeled EC-03 makes 1.4kW of power at 2,550rpm and produces its maximum 7.1ftlb of torque at only 280rpm. Its minimal design and lightweight 50V/15Ah Lithium-ion battery means it weighs only 56kg ready-to-ride. Re: [EVDL] Vacuum Switch
A larger tank may help but the pump will run longer to fill the tank with vacuum pressure once it reaches down to the switch's cut in point. I did not see the type of vacuum switch on your EValbum page photo but appears the tank is in the motor compartment under the hood. If it the standard Square D pressure switch, there is some adjustability in the cut in and out pressures but I personally would rather it cut in more often to maintain the system pressure than to where the vacuum tank/system would be near empty in case of needing another deep brake depression during cycling. If the issue is the noise bothering you when it comes on, you may want to relocate the pump motor or the motor/ tank combination to the trunk or maybe even under the rear of the car. The pump noise will be behind you and the noise will travel rearward as you drive. The extra length of vacuum hose to the power brake booster on the firewall will also act as additional tank capacity of your existing tank and you will still have the same amount of hose connections in case you worry about leakage points. I did this on my Ranger Truck EV along with putting it in an insulated box with ventilation and reduced the noise to where you had to actually strain to hear it. For piece of mind, I installed a LED light indicator on my dash wired off the pump motor run wiring to indicate when the pump was operating. Re: [EVDL] Vacuum Switch
Just remembered...to add to my original reply post. One important thing to mention is that the master cylinder vacuum boosters that were installed originally for ICE applications. Your (20 year old booster) would still operate successfully because you had full time vacuum when the engine was operating even if there were minor leaks in the booster or ICE vacuum system. I found my original brake booster had some leakage at the hose/grommet point (grommet deformed and brittle with possibly some internal leakage). Because I could not find a grommet to fit and the vehicle should last another 15-20 years, I replaced the whole master cylinder/brake booster combination. I found when I changed the parts out, I had less vacuum motor run time between brake depressions and a firmer brake peddle. Food for thought for any old ICE-EV conversion. [EVDL] Ride an EV, Skip the Exercise?
My wife has been wearing a Fit Bit device, which tracks both the number of steps she takes and the number of floors she climbs daily. An odd thing is happening though: when I drive her home from work in my EV, a 1500-ft (450 m) ascent, the device falsely gives her credit for about 7 floors climbed. Yet when we make the trip in one of our ICE cars, it registers no such floor-climbing credit. My first thought is that maybe the stiffer suspension on the EV is causing more vibration and fooling the device into thinking that she's walking--does that sound plausible? Or are there other possibilities anyone could think of? We've already tried removing the device from her belt and putting it in her purse for the duration of the ride, but it still gives her the credit. I mean, I know that my EV is great, but I don't think she's getting healthier just by riding in it. :) Bill ___ UNSUBSCRIBE: http://www.evdl.org/help/index.html#usub http://lists.evdl.org/listinfo.cgi/ev-evdl.org For EV drag racing discussion, please use NEDRA (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NEDRA)

Why wouldn't you run the fan all the time the motor is being used, just in case? It doesn't use that much energy compared to the traction circuit. One less thing to go wrong too.
