Well technically Solar Impulse hasn't crossed the channel yet. It
started in Abu Dhabi heading eastward and is now in Hawaii. Certainly
crossing half of the Pacific beats the hell out of crossing the Channel,
though.

Ironically, the Daily Mail actually has better coverage and photos:

Sorry about the overly long link but another has beaten them
both.Unfortunately, the report skips over the aircraft that beat them. That one
looks the most interesting.

Ather Energy to roll out quick-recharge, high-power e-scooter

A pair of IIT-ian entrepreneurs is set to roll out an electric scooter that
they promise will be as powerful as conventional, petrol-based two-wheelers.
And it gets recharged in just about an hour.

Electric scooters existing in the Indian market require about eight hours to
get completely recharged and clock top speeds of about 25kmph on average.

Graduates of IIT-Madras Tarun Mehta and Swapnil Jain, founders of Ather
Energy, have developed the e-scooter S340 which takes less time than a
mobile phone to get fully recharged.

Currently, the product is being developed further with the backing of
institutional investors and entrepreneurs, including Flipkart founders
Sachin and Binny Bansal.

According to an article published by Quartz, the S340 reaches top speed of
75 kmph powered by its patented, lighter, long-lasting battery pack.

“Our batteries go on for 50,000 kilometres, and can easily last for five to
six years,” Mehta has told Quartz. Other batteries last for only about six
months.

Besides the usual set of gadgetry, such as speed dials and charge
indicators, the S340 is being equipped with a built-in navigation system and
a touchscreen interface.

The model is also able to synchronize with Android phones to provide ride
data. The model is expected to be launched sometime next year, the report
adds.

Although the S340 will be priced much above regular two-wheelers,
manufacturing and technology costs justify the price tag, Mehta says.

At present, electric two-wheelers do not form a significant portion of the
total number of two-wheelers (14 million sold last year) in the Indian
market.

Sales has dipped from 1 lakh units two years ago to 21,000 units last year
after the government removed the Rs22,000 ($346) subsidy on lithium battery
packs in 2012.

Also, the company should face tough competition from big players in the
market such as Mahindra and Hero.

[EVDL] EVLN: Monterey-CA's wireless-charged electric trolley

Monterey >> Everything about Monterey’s wirelessly-powered trolley requires
imagination.

The ring of its bell is just a recording, most of its antique features
inside are plastic made to resemble gold or metal and, even though it looks
like a San Francisco cable car, it is pretty much a bus.

Yet the first trolley powered by wireless electricity in an American city is
already posting impressive numbers.

Since its debut on Memorial Day, it has attracted more than 8,000
passengers, and by not using a gas-powered trolley, saved 400 gallons of
diesel fuel and prevented 10,000 pounds of carbon dioxide from going into
the air.

“We’re know we’re not burning diesel fuel, and we know we don’t have the
pollution that goes along with it,” Monterey-Salinas Transit chief executive
officer Carl Sedoryk said.

The free Monterey trolley system runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day and
includes two gas-powered trolleys.

Sedoryk said the electric trolley will live on past the usual trolley time.
Starting in September, it will traverse the Line 2 route that serves Pacific
Grove and Carmel.

Based on MST’s testing, the charge from Monterey is plenty to make it to
Carmel and back.

On Sunday, trolley driver Jose Degracia pulled over a circular, beige
charging station planted in the cement behind Old Monterey Cafe on Tyler
Street.

He waits for a few seconds to see if it needs a charge but a tablet computer
attached to his dashboard says it still has plenty of juice. So, he simply
drives off on the four-mile route that includes stops near Cannery Row,
Monterey Bay Aquarium, Monterey Conference Center and Fisherman’s Wharf.

If needed, the circle conductor would beam electricity to receiver coils
mounted on the bottom of the trolley.

MST said there have been plenty of people going downtown to specifically
catch the electric trolley, waving off its gas-guzzling comrades, but that
was not the case with most riders Sunday.

Gabe Gallagher from Santa Barbara sat in the back of the bus on wooden seats
with his 1-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter. He didn’t know it was
electric when he got on, but noticed a difference.

“Most of our bus riding experience has been in New York City, so this is a
lot nicer than that,” he said.

Aside from the typical sound of air pressure released from brakes, the
trolley never seems to get louder than a golf cart. A pre-recorded female
voice plays over speakers alerting passengers to tourist sites.

Trolley enthusiast Eion O’Neill, 3, was enjoying the ride but didn’t have
much to say about how it was powered.

“He wouldn’t care if it ran on coal,” joked his grandfather, Milton Younkin
of Monterey.

Sedoryk said MST is still calculating how much money, if any, they are
saving in terms of electricity over gas, as well as maintenance costs.

“Electric vehicles have hundreds of moving parts vs. thousands of moving
parts in a conventional vehicle,” he said. “So, there’s less to maintain.
We’re anticipating significantly lower costs.”

The trolley was paid for by a $1.7 million grant from the Federal Transit
Administration and $400,000 in California Transportation Development Toll
Credits.

Its technology was developed by Utah State University’s Energy Dynamics
Laboratory and further developed and marketed by a spinoff company called
Wireless Advanced Vehicle Electrification, or WAVE.

Volvo Buses has unveiled a concept electric bus as part of the public
transport system in Gothenburg, Sweden, with the Swedish manufacturer
revealing the vehicles may be rolled out in the Middle East if the test run
proves successful.

The concept bus is silent and emission-free and runs on electricity
generated by renewable energy. The batteries are quickly recharged with
renewable electricity at the terminal stops. The Gothenburg buses are also
equipped with on-board Wi-Fi and phone charging facilities.

“The Volvo Group aims to be the world leader in sustainable transport
solutions and already offers a range of advanced models designed to minimise
their environmental impact,” says Steve Hedouin, vice president Volvo Bus
Corporation Middle East and Africa.

“When it comes to infrastructure development, the countries of the Middle
East are among the most forward-thinking and proactive. They are leaders
when it comes to introducing the latest, state-of-the-art public transport
systems, so we are actively looking at opportunities to bring models such as
this electric bus to the region in the future.”

While Volvo Buses already markets a range of electrified buses, ... this
first completely electrically driven bus is currently a concept vehicle.

Measuring 10.7 metres long, it can carry up to 86 passengers, while its
energy consumption is about 80 percent lower than that of corresponding
diesel buses.

[EVDL] EVLN: Rich Tesla-craving Russians get the cold shoulder

Rich Russians craving Teslas get cold shoulder from carmaker

Tesla cars have made inroads in China, but the firm has no plans to sell
them in neighboring Russia. Photo: Bloomberg
]

Almost 100,000 Russians follow Elon Musk’s unofficial social media page, yet
the Tesla founder seems to be promoting his electric car everywhere but in
Russia.

As a result, enthusiasts like Andrey Vratskiy must go to great lengths — and
expense — to own one, Bloomberg reported.

Vratskiy, 33, a software executive, wanted to swap his BMW X6 for a
US$75,000 Tesla S so badly that he agreed to pay almost double for it.

As Tesla has no sales network in Russia, he had to buy the car in the United
States and spend US$12,000 to fly it to Moscow, where it cost US$50,000 to
clear customs.

When he first started driving his ocean blue Tesla two years ago, Vratskiy
said he felt like an endangered species in the wild.

Now he’s roaming with dozens of other members of the fan club he started and
has spotted about 250 more.

“I love gadgets, and this thing is pure gadget, like an iPhone on wheels,”
the report quoted Ivan Streshinskiy, who manages most of Alisher Usmanov’s
US$14 billion fortune as head of USM Advisors, as saying.

Streshinskiy bought a white Model S last summer and is shopping for a red
one.

Other Russian owners include billionaire Roman Abramovich and bankers Herman
Gref and Andrei Akimov, who head OAO Sberbank and OAO Gazprombank, Russia’s
largest and third-largest lenders, respectively.

For Gref, who served as economy minister during President Vladimir Putin’s
first two terms, not even the US-led sanctions that cut off his bank from
the global financial system can curb his appreciation of the American car.

“It doesn’t pollute nature and it’s super cheap and easy to use,” Gref was
quoted as saying.

With such prominent customers already happy and a moneyed class famed for
bouts of conspicuous consumption, Tesla could easily sell 2,000 Model S
sedans and 2,000 of its upcoming Model X sport utility vehicles a year in
Russia if it paid as much attention to this country as it does to China,
Vratskiy said.

Tesla Motors Inc. had global revenue of US$1.1 billion in the first quarter,
the same amount Russians spent on luxury cars from January to May, market
research firm Avtostat said.

The Palo Alto, California-based carmaker said last week it delivered 11,507
Model S sedans in the second quarter. It aims to deliver 55,000 vehicles
worldwide this year.

Vratskiy said he and other members of the Tesla fan club have written to the
company several times to urge it to expand into Russia, but the answer is
always the same — the country just isn’t a priority.

Tesla said it doesn’t sell its vehicles in Russia, so it doesn’t “provide
warranty, charging solutions, service, or assistance with the necessary
steps to legally import” its cars.

It had no comment about when it might enter the market.

With no entry in sight, Tesla enthusiasts in Russia like Vratskiy will have
to continue paying a premium to the private traders that are stepping in to
meet demand.

Two dozen Model S cars are currently being advertised on Avto.ru, the
country’s largest online marketplace for vehicles, for as much as 11 million
rubles (US$195,000) each.

But Tesla buyers in Moscow, take note: The nearest service center is in
Finland, about 900 kilometers away.
