Re: [EVDL] BMS/PCM for upto 24 cells
What do you consider active balancing? MiniBMS has shunts that bleed off energy on the cells that reach a set voltage limit first. They aren't active as in moving charge from high cells to low cells, though. At least the older ones I've got don't have any adjustment capability. They do alarm on any cell under voltage or over voltage, though. The high and low setpoints are fixed. So is the voltage that the shunts are enabled. [EVDL] EV vote
MOG is on a quest for the ‘totally solar electric boat’ with free build licenses for not-for-profit humanitarian use. We have entered a contest and anyone sharing our interests can join in the voting. With 7 category headings of unique inventions, there is no lack of neat stuff upon which to vote. Our blog about the totally solar electric boat, leads into the NASA Tech Pubs competition called 'Create The Future’. Getting a good ranking in the contest would bring the solar EV boat quest to light. In short, if one registers to vote (actually registering for the CR4 site/forum), once registered, they can log back in, vote and follow the contest to conclusion. CR4 is a high tech site for all. The full size solar boat, other prototypes, systems, programs and ideas are all up for recognition by vote. The solar boat is just one entry under the Sustainable Technologies heading. Re: [EVDL] EVs Here, There and Everywhere
The EV era started with a large portion of (conversion) EVs being pickups, including several factory conversions (US Electricar, Solectria, Chevy S10-EV, Ford Ranger to name a few) but today all factory EVs are family sedans. I am not saying that is a bad thing - it would be good if the USA lets go of their love affair with the (cheap on tax) pickup as commute/family vehicle and instead use it for what it is designed for - haul/farm vehicle. But the current lack of EV pickups is remarkable and maybe an EV maker should start fill the niche of pickup EVs (and I don't mean the type like the 3-wheel ZAP or golfcart with dump mechanism - I mean a Freeway capable, 4-wheel light truck - which is one of the popular conversion vehicles for its space and utility. I always get questions when I tell that my pickup is an EV, because these days most people expect an EV to look like a Nissan Leaf. I mean really upon us. As in, for sale at actual dealerships for customers to buy, drive home, plug in, and use on a daily basis. Following on from Nissan’s battery-powered Leaf, which has kept a rather inconspicuous profile on South African roads since its launch in 2013, comes this: the very conspicuous BMW i3. Similar in principle, vastly different in execution. Both, however, along with any future electric cars, have the same mountain to climb in our market, and that is to convince the public of real-world viability. The reason these cars exist is because giants like BMW have a huge environmental burden on their shoulders. Burning fuel creates greenhouse gases, which contribute to global warming. I can’t speak for European and American markets where electric vehicles (EVs) have been well accepted, but here in SA it’s less about what can my car do for the Earth, and more about what can my car do for me. I mean no disrespect to the handful of eco-conscious folks out there who care for the wellbeing of penguins and base their purchasing decisions around this, but most will want to know how much an EV like the i3 will cost to run compared to a normal petrol or diesel powered car... and now we have some numbers. SO HOW CHEAP TO RUN? Firstly, the i3 comes in two flavours. One is fully electric, and the other comes with a tiny petrol-powered generator, or range extender (REX) in BMW-speak, which will keep the hatch moving after batteries have run flat. On test here is the REX. Depending on where you live and how much you pay for electricity, the i3 in either spec will cost around R20 to fully charge from flat, and this will give a range of about 110km. Maybe a little more if you drive very slowly. The range extender model here, comes with a nine-litre petrol tank to fuel the 650cc, 2-cylinder generator at the back, and will increase range by a further 120km if driven responsibly. Unlike hybrid cars like Toyota’s Prius, this engine is in no way connected to the wheels. It only provides electricity to the 125kW/250Nm electric motor driving the rear wheels. Although it almost doubles the distance an i3 can cover from a full charge, it’s best to think of it as emergency bail-out system. Yes, at R602 500 (R532 500 without REX) the i3 is expensive. But remember, you’ll be saving huge at the pumps. In monetary value the i3 equates to around 1.5 litres per 100km, and that’s if you charge it at home. If you charge on someone else’s tab (like work) or at specific BMW quick-charge stations at certain dealerships, your travels will cost nothing. BMW and Nissan SA have also recently agreed to work together setting up inter-brand compatible quick-charge stations at shopping centres and busy streets nationwide. COULD YOU BE CONVERTED? Using a normal [L2-3kW] wall socket, a full top-up will take a minimum of ten hours (maybe a little longer), while a [L3] quick-charge station will take around 30 minutes. For an extra R25 000, BMW will install an iWallbox quick-charging system in your home. I understand the sceptics out there, but I also believe that most can be converted, or at least enlightened, with a single test drive. The i3 is surprisingly fun to drive. It’s remarkably nimble, the steering is effortless, and it’s also impressively quick. We attached our Vbox testing equipment and recorded a best 0-100km/h sprint of 7.9 seconds and the quarter-mile in 16.1 – putting the i3 in the realm of Renault Clio RS and Toyota 86 in terms of acceleration. And, from 0-60km/h, it’s actually much quicker than those cars. From

The electric championship’s newly-unveiled BMW i8 [pih] is equipped with the world's first 7.2kW wireless charger, the Qualcomm Halo, and arrives with the objective that the technology will appear on production car option lists by 2017. Graeme Davison, Qualcomm's Vice President of technology, told evo that the system is essentially production-ready, and that the company is working with several manufacturers to introduce the technology into their model line-ups. Fellow Formula E partner BMW refused to confirm whether it'd be the first carmaker to feature Halo, but Qualcomm did suggest it was at the front of three carmakers vying for first dibs on the wireless tech. While we can't confirm who the trio are, we do know Daimler and Tesla are two other major Qualcomm partners. So how does Halo work? Drivers simply drive their vehicle over the charging pad – they don’t even have to be perfectly in line as the system has around 30cm of allowance. Induction coils in the charging pad and coils in the car form an electrical transformer when in close proximity – and the resulting energy can be used to top up the batteries. It’s the use of the latest system’s 'double-D' coiling that’s enabled Qualcomm to more than double its efficiency, enabling it to charge the i8 Safety Car's 10kWh battery to 80 per cent in around 1-hour. There's even scope for a more powerful 22kW charger to be fitted to the next Formula E safety car - Qualcomm says a 22kW charger could fill an i8's empty battery in as little 15 minutes, and perhaps more impressively, it could even fill the much larger battery of the all-electric i3 in less than an hour. Confirming that this tech actually works in practice is the all-electric Drayson Lola B12/69 EV prototype, which is already using a 20kW Qualcomm charger. There’s even talk of charging on the move – wireless platforms that could be integrated into Formula E street track surfaces that charge the car as it travels along at high speed. Qualcomm is reportedly experimenting with this technology, but unsurprisingly, it’s still some way off being able to charge cars at full race pace. Nevertheless, it previews a future of wireless charging technology that could work on the road. Formula E has provided Qualcomm with the perfect opportunity to promote its potentially groundbreaking technology on a global platform. When its tech makes it to production cars, it could transform the world of hybrid- and fully-electric motoring. And with battery development expected to improve rapidly once teams are given free rein (which could be as soon as next year), electric motor power and efficiency should drastically increase. Whether you like electric racing or not, there’s no denying the potential Formula E has to send electric vehicle technology rocketing forward. And with evo-worthy cars like the BMW i8 as beneficiaries, surely that’s a good thing for all of us… [© evo.co.uk] For EVLN posts use: http://evdl.org/evln/ http://gas2.org/2015/08/24/graphene-converts-heat-electricity/ Graphene Converts pih Heat Into Electricity August 24th, 2015 by Steve Hanley http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20150824005974/en/PGE-Donates-Electric-Safety-Vehicle-City-Napa PG&E Donates Emergency Response pih truck to Napa-CA http://gas2.org/2015/08/18/portland-airport-amasses-record-ev-charging-stations/ Portland-OR International Airport> Largest (42-PDX L1) U.S. Airport EVSE Installation http://www.bizjournals.com/portland/blog/sbo/2015/08/portlands-airport-now-sets-standard-for-ev.html + EVLN: R602,500 i3-rex pih is an eye-opener {brucedp.150m.com} -- View this message in context: http://electric-vehicle-discussion-list.413529.n4.nabble.com/EVLN-Qualcomm-EVSE-charges-10kWh-BMW-i8-pih-pack-c-1hr-6kW-15min-22kW-tp4677351.html Sent from the Electric Vehicle Discussion List mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ UNSUBSCRIBE: http://www.evdl.org/help/index.html#usub http://lists.evdl.org/listinfo.cgi/ev-evdl.org For EV drag racing discussion, please use NEDRA (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NEDRA)

Trials will take place later this year to develop a left-hand lane for drivers to swoop over and wirelessly top up their batteries while on the move. The artist's impression of the bright green "re-charge" lane is an almost exact replica of the energy-giving lanes in Super Nintendo game, F-Zero, from 1990. And the game seems to have unwittingly predicted the future, as experts say nearly every car will be electric or ultra-low emission by 2050 - meaning developments need to get under way. At the moment the 2015 Nissan Leaf can travel 84 miles on a single charge, while the Tesla Model Scan do 230 miles with a 70 kWh battery. Charging stations are few and far between in the UK, making it even more difficult to drive completely "green" - but if the motorway lanes are rolled out it will soon be easier to top up an electric car than a petrol or diesel one. "The potential to recharge low emission vehicles on the move offers exciting possibilities," he said . "The government is already committing £500 million over the next five years to keep Britain at the forefront of this technology." The idea is that power converters and stations will be connected to power transfer loops built into the left lane. And if all goes according to plan, vehicles fitted with wireless charging technology will then be able to stay charged as they drive in the powered lane. Trials for the technology are expected to start later this year, the government announced this month, and will replicate motorway conditions before being tried out on the road. Since its UK launch in January this year the Soul EV has received a positive response from media and customers for its performance and ability to cope well on both urban and country roads. Wireless charging technology has the potential to significantly enhance the convenience of electric vehicles – and so increase the appeal and acceptance among consumers – while possibly enabling smaller battery pack sizes and reduced vehicle weight. The system is being developed by Hyundai-Kia America Technical Center Inc (HATCI) and Mojo Motability Inc – a wireless power technology company, after being awarded a funding grant from the U.S Department of Energy (DOE). “HATCI is honoured to be selected as a partner with the DOE,” said Dr. Sung Hwan Cho, President, HATCI. “Innovative technologies such as this align well with one of our core goals, which is to create a vehicle experience that is intuitive and easy for the consumer.” Having already gone through several stages of development, this final phase will use five Soul EV’s to test how wireless technology works in real-world performance, including durability, safety, and performance. KMA and Mojo Mobility have not yet announced when the system will be available for purchase.
