Engineers are analysing traction control systems for the brand's first
electric SUV, due on sale with a 310-mile range

Audi's engineers will move testing for the E-tron onto the public streets of
Geneva this coming week to build anticipation ahead of the all-electric
SUV's arrival.

A fleet of vehicles will be driven around the city's central areas, passing
hotspots including its university and art history museum along the way.
They'll be dressed in an eye-catching wrap, which has been previewed in a
single image (below).

The Geneva cars will have come from Audi's 250 E-tron-strong development
fleet that has been used over the past year to rapidly build mileage and
finalise the setup of the brand's upcoming EV. The E-tron is due to follow
the Jaguar I-Pace onto roads later this year.

Recent sightings have shown what the car will look like. The car's design
looks to have been toned down compared with the E-tron quattro concept (see
gallery) it is based on, with a slightly less butch front and less raked
rear window. But the concept's lighting designs, which include a strip to
connect the tail-lights, look to have been retained.

The E-tron, predicted to have a range of at least 500km (311 miles), is
built on a development of the electrified platform Porsche is using for its
Mission E electric saloon. It is powered by three electric motors, two of
which drive the rear wheels while one powers the fronts.

This set-up was seen in the E-tron quattro concept of 2015, which offered
maximum combined outputs of 496bhp and 590lb ft. It enabled a 0-62mph time
of 4.5sec and a restricted top speed of 131mph – a preview of what’s to come
with the production model.

This set-up will also be used in a second all-electric SUV model, which
itself was previewed by the E-tron Sportback concept shown at this year’s
Shanghai motor show. It features a more swept-back design and will make it
to market one year after its sibling.

Audi has previously said that the E-tron SUV will “cost about the same as a
well-specced Audi A6”, suggesting it will have a price point of at least
£60,000. The second SUV may top that figure.

2018 launch

Audi sales and marketing boss Dietmar Voggenreiter said that Audi has chosen
to launch the E-tron now because battery technology is mature enough to
offer a range of more than 500km (311 miles). This figure is “crucial”, he
said, because consumers won’t accept less.

Charging infrastructure should is also rapidly growing — another key reason
for choosing a 2018 launch date. “A 400km to 500km range must be possible
and we must have a fast charging infrastructure,” said Voggenreiter. “Both
things are coming in 2018. The battery energy density is there and there is
a lot of charging infrastructure in Europe, the US and Asia.”

Voggenreiter said Audi was involved through the Volkswagen Group with rival
firms such as Ford, BMW and Daimler in ensuring there’s a fast-charging
network for longer-range electric vehicles to use.

“It’s not our job to invest in charging points,” he said. “We are pushing
and organising this, though, and working with partners on it.”

Voggenreiter referred to the ‘chicken and egg’ situation of limited charging
infrastructure to date: there has been no need for third parties to install
chargers because there are not enough cars to use them, and vice versa. “No
cars, no infrastructure, but in the next two years there are lots of
investments,” he added.

E-tron name

Audi has opted not to launch its electric cars under a sub-brand, like BMW
with its i models and Mercedes-Benz’s future EQ range. Instead, it is using
E-tron, which has been a suffix on electrified Audis, as a model name in its
own right. It is intended as a stand-alone, milestone launch model to
introduce the technology in a similar strategy used by Audi with ‘quattro’
in the 1980s.

Speaking last year about the E-tron name, Audi boss Rupert Stadler said: “It
is comparable to the first Audi Quattro, which was known simply as the

At first glance, this seems like a terrible idea, but I’ve come around to
the prospect of a 1988 Fiero GT serving as a daily driven battery electric
vehicle. The seller, an avid Fiero enthusiast, built this car as his own
zero emissions commuter in late 2011, and has racked up 63,000 electric
miles since, proving that it is not only a great platform, but perhaps more
reliable than the Fiero would otherwise have been. Now it’s on eBay [
https://www.ebay.com/itm/1988-Pontiac-Fiero-GT/282867445855
] for you to live out your electric sports car dreams.

In stock form, this Fiero GT would have produced 140 horsepower and 170
ft-lb of torque from a 2.8-liter V6. 1988 has always been considered the
best year of Fiero production, as updates to the suspension and bodywork
made it the most attractive and best handling model, just before production
ended. While this Electrero GT has about half that horsepower number, quoted
at 76 horsepower and 120 ft-lb.

The motor is an HPEVS AC-50 unit, powered by a thirty-four-cell stack of
Thundersky LiFePO4 cells connected in series for about 114 volts. Both the
controller and the motor are aircooled, meaning there are no liquids to
worry about. The conversion added a total of about 400 pounds to the car’s
weight, but it’s been distributed more evenly than the Fiero was from the
factory. The builder even went so far as to install stiffer front springs to
compensate for the bulk.

All of that EV stuff means this Fiero has an alleged maximum range of about
103 miles, which would have been absolutely revolutionary in 2011 when this
was built. Today, it’s a little underwhelming, but still more than enough to
get the average American back and forth to work every day. Unlike Porsche’s
Mission E or Tesla’s new Roadster, this E-Fiero is available for purchase
today, and won’t cost you tens of thousands of dollars. If you’re looking
for a small, lightweight, two-seat EV sports car, this is really your only
option.

The seller has, somewhat tellingly, replaced this battery-powered beast with
a brand new Chevy Bolt EV. They will be purchasing their seventh Fiero in
order to have the long-range needed to go on spirited drives with the local
Fiero Club. [That’s a thing?] There is a potential for a really good deal
here, as the auction’s starting price is just $6,995, which seems an
absolute steal for a mile-proven BEV converted GM sports car from 1988. A
gasoline-powered Fiero GT would cost you more than that these days.

[EVDL] 150W DC/DC isolated converters to 5 or 15V

2018-03-07 Thread Cor van de Water via EV
Cleaning garage:

Anybody interested in several 150W isolated DC/DC conversion modules?

Input 36 - 72V, output either 5V 30A or 15V 10A.

The output voltage can be tweaked up/down with resistors.

They come as pair, mounted on a long narrow circuit board: one 5V and
one 15v module.

Give me a few bucks plus shipping (several fit in a Large Flat rate box)
and I will send them.

Lucent/Tyco JW150A1 and JW150C1

or compatible: RO sv48-5-150-1 and sv48-15-150-1

They are used and need cooling with a fan to maintain full output, a
heatsink is mounted on each module.

I can supply the fans that were used for this purpose.

Re: [EVDL] Sending an electric bakkie into space is Tesla's marketing ...

2018-03-07 Thread Cor van de Water via EV
FYI, "bakkie" comes from the Dutch word "bak" since the South Afrikaner
language stems from the settlers from The Netherlands, hundreds of years ago.
"Bak" means container (or bin, tub, vessel, manger, trough, vat, holder) but
can be use used (often derogatory) as a slang word for car.
It has many other (slang) uses, such as a jail/prison, a racket or joke and can
also refer to a cup of coffee in the form "bakkie".
That has nothing to do with the title of the article though, it is simply the
slang version of the official "bakje" which is a small "bak".
Dutch places "je" after a noun to make it a small person/item/place or to make
it cute.
So, "bakkie" in the title is slang for a small or cute car.

Sending a car to space, electric bakkie... is Tesla's marketing as effective in

San Francisco - Elon Musk is the undisputed champion of communication. Day
after day announcements keep coming to reassure investors and the financial
markets. In Tesla’s 2016 annual report, Musk stated that the company would
produce 500 000 vehicles in 2018. In November 2017, he unveiled the Semi Tesla,
a fully electric semitrailer that generated significant interest and orders.
And on February 6, 2018, he sent a car into space.

Behind Musk’s magic tricks, what is the reality? Is the marketing genius as
effective in production? And where are the fundamentals of the Tesla group?

Far-reaching communication

The president and founder of Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk completed a master
stroke by using the February launch of SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy to put a red Tesla
Roadster in space. It even had a driver, a mannequin called “Starman”.
It was a beautifully orchestrated operation, and the video shows images of the
Earth below, with David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” playing in the background.

The stunt made headlines around the world, and was one of the most far-reaching
advertising messages ever – and was enough to distract investors from the fact
that Tesla’s financial situation is far from idyllic.

An undisputed champion of marketing and a mythical character, Elon Musk is
making people believe their dreams can become true. Not only does he make the
company’s current and potential customers dream, but he also makes the
financial markets dream. By taking the analysts and investors with him, Musk
has been able to propel Tesla’s share price to great heights. Introduced to the
stock market in June 2010 at $17, Tesla’s shares reached $352.05 on February
23, 2018, an increase of 1 970%.

Tesla’s capitalisation exceeds that of Ford and GM

With a price of around $299 per share at the beginning of April 2017, Tesla
Motors’ market capitalisation reached $48.2 billion and was ahead of Ford Motor
Company on April 3, 2017. In early May 2017, Tesla’s market capitalisation
reached $52.6 billion, surpassing General Motors’ by $1 billion.

Since then, the stock price (judged at the highest point) has continued to
rise, reaching a market capitalisation of $59.4 billion on February 23, 2018,
more than double that of Renault-Nissan (25.4 billion euros, and the world’s
largest automaker by sales volume and more than General Motors
($57.4 billion) and Ford Motor Company ($41.7 billion) as of February 23, 2018.

Yet Tesla has so far sold far fewer cars than Ford, General Motors and
Renault-Nissan, and has accumulated losses since its inception. So what
elements justify such enthusiasm on the part of investors? While the company’s
tremendous growth prospects and position as the sole builder of 100% electric
vehicles in the world undoubtedly contribute to the appetite of investors,
emotional factors seems to be the key drivers. It’s Elon Musk who leads the
dance – charismatic, iconoclastic, innovative and driven by his wildest dreams.

A new concept of transport

The California-based automaker Tesla was founded in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and
Marc Tarpenning, and has been successful in attracting customers to the concept
of a high-performance, fully electric car with that’s simple to use despite
being extremely complex. The company initially focused on luxury models with
the Model S and Model X, costing nearly $100,000 each. Since then Elon Musk has

around a new concept: driving differently, being eco-responsible and
participating in the fight against pollution. Despite the hype, however,
Teslas may not be as green as you might think. The question of the vehicles’
limited range also remains to be solved.

Beyond dreams, myths, what about reality?

Production difficulties

Despite Musk’s announcements and the promises of record numbers, Tesla is
facing serious production problems that are causing delivery delays and
pushing up inventories. In a June 3, 2017 article titled “Elon Musk: Tesla
factory injuries ‘break my heart’ ”, Business Insider revealed that the
workplace accident rate at Tesla’s Fremont production site were higher than
the industry average in 2014 and 2015. In a January 4, 2018, article in the

Bloomberg’s Liam Denning laid out how Tesla has not kept its promises in
terms of production.

Production figures are constantly being revised downward
