In preparation, the vehicle has now been given its official name: The “Mission E” concept study, the name currently used to describe Porsche’s complete electric offering, will be known as the Taycan. The name can be roughly translated as “lively young horse”, referencing the imagery at the heart of the Porsche crest, which has featured a leaping steed since 1952. “Our new electric sports car is strong and dependable; it’s a vehicle that can consistently cover long distances and that epitomises freedom”, explains Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. The oriental name also signifies the launch of the first electric sports car with the soul of a Porsche. Porsche announced the name for its first purely electric series as part of the “70 years of sports cars” ceremony. Two permanently excited synchronous motors (PSM) with a system output of over 600 hp (440 kW) accelerate the electric sports car to 100 km/h in well under 3.5 seconds and to 200 km/h in under twelve seconds. This performance is in addition to a continuous power level that is unprecedented among electric vehicles: Multiple jump starts are possible in succession without loss of performance, and the vehicle’s maximum range is over 500 km in accordance with the NEDC. Names with real meaning At Porsche, the vehicle names generally have a concrete connection with the corresponding model and its characteristics: The name Boxster describes the combination of the boxer engine and roadster design; Cayenne denotes fieriness, the Cayman is incisive and agile, and the Panamera offers more than a standard Gran Turismo, which is what allowed it to win the Carrera Panamericana long-distance race. The name Macan is derived from the Indonesian word for tiger, with connotations of suppleness, power, fascination and dynamics. Future investment doubled Porsche plans to invest more than six billion euro in electromobility by 2022, doubling the expenditure that the company had originally planned. Of the additional three billion euro, some 500 million euro will be used for the development of Taycan variants and derivatives, around one billion euro for electrification and hybridisation of the existing product range, several hundred million for the expansion of production sites, plus around 700 million euro for new technologies, charging infrastructure and smart mobility. Extensive modifications and expansion at the Zuffenhausen headquarters At the Porsche headquarters in Zuffenhausen, a new paint shop, dedicated assembly area for the Taycan and a conveyor bridge for transporting the painted bodies and drive units to the final assembly area are currently being constructed. The existing engine plant is being expanded to manufacture electric drives and the body shop will also be developed. Investment is also planned for the Weissach Development Centre. Production of the Taycan is creating around 1,200 new jobs in Zuffenhausen alone. 70 years of the Porsche sports car The sports car manufacturer is celebrating its anniversary with numerous activities throughout 2018. For the weekend of June 16–17, Porsche will host employees, local residents and prospective customers at a celebration in and around the plant in Stuttgart. The event will include activities for visitors both young and old, plant tours, music, food trucks, live coverage of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the broadcast of the World Cup game between Germany and Mexico. In a recent Twitter post, music producer Anton Zaslavski has a shared a
story about how the ‘Autopilot’ semi-autonomous driver assist system of his
Tesla electric vehicle had ‘probably’ saved his life.
Anton Zaslavski, who is popularly known by his stage name Zedd, has 8
million followers on Twitter. In his new post on the social microblogging
platform, he has mentioned how the Autopilot system of his Tesla electric
vehicle helped him out of a potential danger.
Sharing his story about the Tesla Autopilot system, Zedd said in the Twitter
post that he once dozed off while driving home late at night on the highway,
with the Autopilot of his Tesla car left on.
Zedd further said that he “got woken up” by the Autopilot system which kept
“beeping + turning off music to wake me up;” and added: “Would have prob
been dead without it.”
With the Autopilot system being held responsible for some of the recent
crashes involving Tesla’s electric vehicles, Zedd has shared his story about
the system because he feels that it “shows the other side” of the Autopilot
system.
Zedd’s story has drawn attention to the fact that the Autopilot system in
Tesla vehicles sends periodic alerts to drivers to ensure that they keep
their hands on the wheel. The system prompts the drivers to remain alert all
the time, so that they can take control of their vehicles when required.

We expect this trend to continue for a while, though eventually it will make sense to cap the number of kWh a car might have. Then, reducing the physical size and weight of the battery packs will take precedence, which will also contribute to further increases in efficiency and, therefore, range. Until we get there, we’re keeping an eye on which vehicles have the biggest batteries as that is a great indicator of range and relative price. Now, we should note that since a number of new vehicles with large battery packs are poised to arrive over the next year or so, we’ll be updating this list from time to time to keep you up to speed with this developing market. Also, since some vehicles have more than one battery size option, we are limiting their appearance to one instance, represented by its largest available pack. Keeping all that in mind, let’s take a look at the top 7 vehicles available in the U.S. today, according to the amount of energy their batteries will hold. (*Note – You’ll find battery size and much more in our Compare EVs page here). 7. 2018 Ford Focus Electric – 33.5 kWh The Ford Focus Electric has been around since December of 2011, but got a 47 percent increase to its battery for the 2017 model year. That’s enough juice to earn a 115-mile range rating from the EPA. It just edges out the BMW i3 with its 33.2 kWh pack, but with only 1,817 examples moved in all of 2017, it’s hardly a sales champ. By contrast, the i3, with only 107-mile EPA range and $44,450 base MSRP, sold 6,276 copies. The Ford Focus Electric starts at $29,120 before incentives. 6. 2017 Volkswagen e-Golf – 35.8 kWh Like the Ford Focus Electric, the Volkswagen e-Golf is built on the bones of an internal-combustion-powered model. Still, engineers have figured out how to squeeze a 35.8 kWh battery into this vehicle, despite it not being originally designed to accommodate an electric drivetrain. Starting at $30,495 before incentives, the 2017 e-Golf (there is no 2018 model), offers 125 miles of range, as rated by the EPA. cheapest BEVs 5. 2018 Nissan LEAF – 40 kWh The 2018 Nissan LEAF is a thoroughly refreshed update of the original we’ve loved since December of 2010. Besides an exterior that strongly aligns with the design language of many of its Nissan stablemates, the latest LEAF packs on an additional 10 kWh to the 30 kWh battery of the 2017 version. Though it has a variant arriving with the next year that will boast a 60 kWh pack, this first new LEAF is a pretty good value, starting at $29,990 and offering an EPA-rated 151 miles of range. 4. 2018 Chevy Bolt – 60 kWh General Motors was seen as a little late to the all-electric game, its public relations nightmare EV1 experiment aside, preferring to pursue the plug-in market with its unique Chevy Volt. It made up for lost time by surpassing the almost every all electric out there with the Chevy Bolt and its 60 kWh battery selling 23,297 examples — more than double the sales of the Nissan LEAF — in 2017. The electric hatch wears an MSRP of $36,620 and boasts an EPA range rating of 238 miles. Tesla Model 3 3. 2018 Tesla Model 3 Long Range – 80.5 kWh The latest offering from California electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla is the Model 3 Long Range, which it began delivering last July. Now, this sedan may be known as the “affordable Tesla,” with a starting price of $35,000, but that’s actually the price point for the Model 3 Standard Battery version. To get 80.5 kWh and the EPA-rated 310 miles of range that comes with it will cost an extra $9,000, putting its starting price $44,000 before incentives. 2. 2018 Tesla Model X 100D – 100 kWh Technically speaking, this electric SUV has the same size battery as our number one spot position holder, but

A bumper car at a Charlotte amusement park caught fire as children waiting
to get on the electric vehicles looked on - and it was captured on film.
Scott Spainhour recorded the incident on his cell phone on Monday.
The fire erupted at the Carowinds, a theme park located near the border
between North and South Carolina.
Spainhour’s video showed children watching the fire from behind a gate.
A bumper car at a Charlotte amusement park caught fire as children waiting
to get on the electric vehicles looked on - and it was captured ...
As the fire was extinguished by a park employee, clouds of smoke overran
that area.
The blanket of smoke covered the children as they waited feet away from
where the bumper car caught fire.
Luckily, the driver of the bumper car that caught fire got out of the
vehicle before the accident, according to the Charlotte Observer.
Park employees conducted an inspection of the Dog’ems ride and determined
that it was safe to resume.

The first large-scale delivery of Tesla’s much-anticipated Model 3 sedan has
arrived in Canada, ending months of waiting for anxious owners who based
their purchase on nothing more than online specs and photos.
Tesla enthusiast website Teslarati reported that roughly 300 examples of the
Model 3 were spotted in a Toronto parking [

] lot on Wednesday.
John Elliot from Waterloo, Ont., said he has been waiting for more than two
years to get behind the wheel of the California-based automaker’s first
mid-priced vehicle.
“I haven’t slept all night,” he told CTV Toronto on Wednesday. “When I was
like eight years old, I worked with a horse and buggy in a milk wagon. Now
here I am. I’m 76 years old, and I’m driving an electric car.”
The Model 3 starts at $45,600 before provincial green car incentives. The
car is a smaller, simplified and more affordable version of the Model S
sedan, according to the manufacturer’s website.
All of the vehicles in this delivery have been spoken for.
Wendy Weir, from Kingston, Ont., said her husband Lenn had been counting
down the days until he could take delivery of their new wheels.
“It’s been like watching a kid trying to stay asleep so Santa Claus can come
on Christmas morning,” she said. “I get it, but to me it’s just a car.”

The Hyundai Kona Electric order book has been closed in Norway after 20,000
expressions of interest in Hyundai’s new electric SUV are made. Just 2,500
Kona EVs will be available this year in Norway.
We all know Norway is the biggest market for electric cars in Europe –
especially per capita – so it’s no surprise that they’re trying to pile in
to the new Hyundai Kona Electric in a big way.
But it seems Hyundai Norway has been a bit overwhelmed by expressions of
interest in the Kona EV from Norway’s car buyers, receiving 20,000 in a very
short time when they appear to have just 2.500 cars to offer this year.
So, for the time being, Hyundai in Norway is closing their order book whilst
they try and figure out how to deal with demand. Demand which is going to be
further fuelled with a list price in Norway of just £30,000.
That price of £30,000 for the Hyundai Kona in Norway isn’t for the
entry-level, smaller battery and motor model, but for the full fat 64kWh
battery, chunky 210bhp electric motor, 300 mile range and 100kW rapid charge
ability.
Even adding extras doesn’t cost a fortune, with a leather interior adding
under £1k to the price, and adding leather and a Panoramic roof just under
£2k.
Hyundai closed the list for those wanting to buy a Kona EV when it announced
its prices, giving those who expressed interest time (until 17 June) to
confirm their order. They then plan to re-open the order book on 2 July.
Although if a sizable chunk of those expressions of interest turn in to
actual orders – which they probably will – Hyundai are going to have a
problem. But, as problems go, it could be a lot worse.
