Porsche Taycan EV smashes pre-order record before launch

Porsche’s first full battery-electric model has Taycan the record for
pre-orders for any Porsche product ever, company CEO Oliver Blume has
confirmed.

Porsche’s first full battery-electric model has Taycan the record for
pre-orders for any Porsche product ever, company CEO Oliver Blume has
confirmed.

As excitement builds in the lead-up to the launch of the Porsche Taycan
electric sports sedan later this year, Blume admitted there was concern for
the company’s ability to meet public demand.

“We have 20,000 pre-orders already,” Blume confirmed.

“No Porsche has ever had 20,000 pre orders. Not ever.

“Half a year before (it goes on sale), we have 20,000 pre-orders because we
were entering a totally new segment.”

Porsche originally planned only a production rate of 20,000-25,000 Taycans a
year (about eight per cent of its current volume) from its hemmed-in
production site at its Zuffenhausen headquarters in Stuttgart.

But Porsche is already considering how to squeeze more production out of its
new facility, before the Taycan is launched later this year.

The new factory-within-a-factory dots the body, paint and axle shops around
Porsche’s existing site and connects them to the four-level assembly plant
via a 900-metre covered conveyer.

“We have to think about our capacity at Zuffenhausen and how to improve it,”
Blume admitted.

Factory Planning manager, David Thor Tryggvason, admitted the €700 million
Taycan plant was limited because it was squeezed inside the existing Porsche
911 production plant at its Zuffenhausen HQ.

“The complexity is very high due to the lack of space and we had to build
the assembly hall on four levels,” he said.

“Our plan is 20,000-25,000 cars at the site but we can ramp that up a bit.
We have the capacity to have our overhang capacity within the Volkswagen
Group. There is the possibility within VAG to provide capacity for
overhang.”

Indeed, Porsche director of finance and IT, Lutz Meschke, admitted last year
there are contingency plans in case of a “euphoria moment” such as this.

Those plans include spilling some production to Audi’s Böllinger Höfe e-tron
(and R8) plant near Neckarsulm, even though Porsche’s spill production has
traditionally moved to Valmet in Finland.

Due on sale in Australia from mid-2020, the 450kW Taycan will compete not
only with the Tesla Model S, but with its sister car, Audi’s e-tron GT, and
Mercedes-Benz’s upcoming EQS, based on Benz’s first dedicated EV platform.

While the initial cars will come with all-wheel drive, there will also be a
rear-drive variant, and Porsche plans to use its power electronics to make
the car handle more like a rear-drive car than an AWD model.

Porsche’s initial electric sedan, which will be joined by a crossover
version previewed by the Mission E Cross Turismo concept, will use
permanent-magnet synchronous electric motors mounted on each of its axles,
while Audi’s e-tron uses asynchronous motors.

The Taycan’s centre-of-gravity is 80mm lower than the 911’s, with 400
lithium-ion pouch cells, with up to 300kW of safe charging power.

It’s shorter than it looks in photos, but will still stretch to about 4850mm
long and 1990mm wide, making it almost 200mm shorter than the Panamera but
53mm wider. It’s also shorter, but wider, than the Model S from California.

The Porsche Taycan is scarcely related to the Audi e-tron, which is based on
the C-BEV architecture developed at Ingolstadt.

The Taycan (and the e-tron GT) sits on its own in-house J1 architecture,
built from high-strength steel, carbon-fibre and aluminium, which will be
used only for the Taycan and its variants, plus the e-tron GT.

It does, though, form the basis of the PPE (Premium Platform Electric) EV
architecture that will be used across all of the Volkswagen Group’s premium
brands, including Audi, Lamborghini, Bentley and possibly even Bugatti.

The Taycan has a long wheelbase for its overall length, with an incredibly
short rear overhang. Porsche also slashed battery capacity from inside the
battery pack to create what it calls “foot garages” for the rear passengers.

The rear seat pans in the 4+1 arrangement are moulded into the body itself,
so the seat hip point will be very low.

It's cute but is it a long-term win?

If you’ve ever vacationed in Africa or the Middle East (or, dear reader, you
live there and read RideApart, thanks!), you’re familiar with that
particular mostly-commercial vehicle seldom seen in the USA, the Tuk tuk.

Technically an “auto-rickshaw” it is the three-wheeled love child of a
motorcycle and a minibus ... the electric vehicle revolution is touching the
tuk tuks.

Meet the eTuk. Based out of Denver, CO, eTuk is selling these electric-only
machines starting around $20,000 US with a hard-sell brochure (don’t
download the e-book, trust me, unless you already know these things are
legal in your state). The company had the eTuks tested and certified with
the US DOT [
https://www.rideapart.com/articles/302950/helmet-safety-certifications-crash/
] and they each have a 17-character VIN for registration. That doesn’t
necessarily mean they’re allowed in your city, so if you’re inspired you’d
better check first.

They seem to be marketed as a more-interesting taxi, or an unusual delivery
“van,” or a modern food-delivery “roach coach” (you know, that truck that
shows up full of breakfast? Do they only call them Roach Coaches in
Massachusetts?).

By their very design they are open-air but could be enclosed (sort of like a
reverse convertible–it has a roof but no, or temporary, walls). In my
estimation they would not be great in the outdoor snowy weather we get in
the north of the country, but perhaps the headquarters in Denver has figured
out a way to make them year-round friendly. They would probably do great in
southern tourist-laden cities and amusement parks.

While there’s a ton of hype about the vehicles in their marketing brochures
and website, there’s very little hard information about cost of upkeep,
range, highway legality or safety. The owners’ manual does detail the 72
volt motor, the twelve (12!) wet-cell lead-acid batteries and the need to
add water to them regularly. These are not maintenance-free AGM batteries,
but on the bright side nor are they Lithium Ion, so they probably won’t
catch fire (or hold nearly as much of a charge). The charge time is
approximately 14 hours.

Also, since the machine uses traditional motorcycle-style forks, those will
need maintenance along with the hydraulic brakes.

Still, they’re groovy and unusual, and would probably catch on as tour
“buses” in warmer climates. Those of us who ride motorcycles will have an
advantage, since their switchgear is what you’d expect on any
run-of-the-mill set of handlebars.

Re: [EVDL] tesla to close stores, sell online only

2019-03-09 Thread Mark Abramowitz via EV
I think that Musk was smoking something.

Personally, I would NEVER buy a car without driving it (or at least sit in)
first. The only exception would be for brand new clean technology vehicles that
I *knew* I wanted - think EV1, RAV-4 EV, Civic GX, Tesla Roadster, Toyota
Mirai, Honda Clarity, etc.

But I’m an air quality guy, and an early adopter of these technologies.

Then again, for the ones that I did get, I did get to drive first. And my guess
is that my wife would veto any car purchase without driving it first.

People like me that would buy a Tesla because of the technology, for the most
part already have one.

We’re now starting to get into the mass market. I think it’s ridiculous to
think that many people will buy online, at least to the extent that you need to
be a successful company.

I really hope that I’m wrong, and that Musk has some research to back up this
move.

My 2¢.

Tesla’s Cost-Saving Plan to Close Stores Hits a Legal Speed Bump: Its Retail
Landlords
March 8, 2019 Kevin Kelleher

Elon Musk’s plans to shut down most of Tesla’s retail stores may have been
intended to cut costs and help Tesla lower the price of its Model 3 electric
sedan to $35,000. Instead, it may expose the company to new headaches. The
latest, according to the Wall Street Journal: The risk of legal challenges
from its stores’ landlords.

Tesla leases many of its stores from the owners of shopping centers. Robert
Taubman, the CEO of Taubmen Centers—which leases space to Tesla in eight of
its properties—said at an investment conference this week that the electric
automaker “is going to owe a lot of landlords a lot of money.” Tesla has a
$1.6 billion in lease obligations, with $1.2 billion of that amount due
between now and 2023, the Journal reports.

In its securities filings, Tesla has previously warned of the risk that its
“various non-cancellable operating lease agreements” could lead to legal
battles should the company seek to terminate them. In that case, Tesla may
not be able to save as much money as Musk is hoping, and could be offset by
its legal bills.

Musk caught investors, customers, and even Tesla’s own employees off guard
when he announced the company would close stores. Some sales staff only
learned of the move when Tesla posted the news on its company blog. An
annual report published nine days before the announcement underscored the
importance of the stores to the company’s strategy, saying the network of
“highly visible, premium outlets… enables us to better control costs.” ...

Rather than being taken as a bold move that could help Tesla sell more cars,
the decision to shut down retail stores is seen by some investors as a
possible sign of financial desperation.

“This was a total 180-degree turn,” Alex Chalekian, the CEO of Lake Avenue
Financial in Pasadena, CA, told Bloomberg this week. “Tesla had been talking
about expanding stores, and all of a sudden they are closing them. To me,
this signals a huge financial concern and a possible cash-flow issue for
Tesla.”

I hadn't happened on this report before, but as the Frito-Lay Smith trucks are
set to be auctioned next week, this is a good read.
Causes of Smith's demise include high failure rates on their motors, chargers,
controllers and even the Valence U-27 Charge batteries had a fatal flaw- this
report says many included counterfeit circuit boards that failed early!
