Headed to Tesla Fremont factory tomorrow to help with vehicle deliveries
4:41 PM - Dec 30, 2019
]

Instead of partying on New Year’s Eve, hundreds of people who had ordered
Teslas for delivery before a federal tax credit expired after Dec. 31 lined
up at the company’s Fremont plant to pick up their cars.

The atmosphere was festive: People were handing out water, snacks, toy
Teslas and tickets to a food truck. The day before, Tesla CEO Elon Musk
tweeted [
https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1211779406676611073
] that he was “headed to Tesla Fremont factory tomorrow to help with vehicle
deliveries,” which earned him accolades from followers.

But the event was not so rewarding for people who went home after midnight
without a car or a tax credit after waiting in line for hours in the cold.
Ellen Fader of Oakland was one of them.

When Fader put a deposit down on a Tesla Model 3 at the Walnut Creek store
on Nov. 27, she told the salesman she needed to pick up the vehicle before a
$1,875 federal tax credit expired after Dec. 31.

The federal tax credit for an electric vehicle starts phasing out after its
manufacturer has sold 200,000 electric vehicles in the United States. The
credit for Teslas, originally $7,500, started shrinking on Jan. 1, 2019, and
went to zero after 2019.

The last week of November, Tesla reportedly sent emails to potential
customers that said, “Place your order and take delivery by December 31,
2019 to be eligible for the federal tax credit. Orders placed near the end
of the year are not guaranteed to be delivered by December 31.”

During her test drive, Fader told the salesman she was flying back East on
Dec. 17 and was concerned about getting the credit. The next day, she
received an email from the salesman that said, “Once the financing is
complete, it is my job to track a car for you by the 17th before you leave
for the East Coast.”

When she didn’t hear back, she emailed the salesman on Dec. 13, asking for
an estimated delivery date. He responded, “ETA is about the 20th.”

Fader decided to fly to New Jersey as planned on the 17th, but come home
early to get the tax credit.

On Dec. 18, she got a text saying she could pick up her car on Dec. 19 and
should either confirm the appointment or request a call back. When she got a
call back, “I asked about a Dec. 30 or 31 pickup date. They told me not to
worry and that I should contact them when I got back,” Fader said.

She paid about $300 to change her return ticket to Saturday, Dec. 28.

On the morning of Dec. 30, she started calling “any Tesla number I could
find.” She finally reached a person who said she had an appointment to pick
up her car on New Year’s Eve at 8 p.m. at the Tesla factory in Fremont.

She called a friend she was supposed to meet for New Year’s Eve dinner. The
friend, Ann-Marie Hogan, agreed to accompany Fader to the factory.

When they got to the plant a little before 8, they

We’ve often accused the legacy automakers of lacking imagination, but now we
see that at least someone at GM has a sense of irony. The company’s first
announced electric pickup truck will be called a Hummer.

GM will not be reviving the Hummer make, which choked to death in 2010, but
will sell the Hummer pickup under the GMC brand.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the e-Hummer “is likely to be sold in
small volumes as a rugged, jeep-like pickup truck for off-road enthusiasts,”
according to “people briefed on the strategy.” It’s expected to go on sale
by early 2022, and will be among the first of several large electric SUVs
and pickup trucks from GM.

GM will build this beast, and other electric trucks, at its
Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant, which was marked for closure before the
company announced plans for a $3-billion renovation in October.

WSJ says GM plans to run an ad for the new irony-mobile during next month’s
Super Bowl.

Aside from the headline-grabbing comedic aspects of the announcement, this
is a milestone because it represents a 180-degree turnaround for GM. Until
recently, most electric offerings from non-Tesla brands have been small,
practical cars, which, as any marketer will tell you, hold little appeal for
US buyers. Now GM is going to electrify the biggest and baddest surrogate
sex organ in the auto industry. No specs have been announced, but it’s safe
to assume that the e-Hummer will boast plenty of horsepower and towing
capacity.

A Sierra Club official once said the Hummer “embodied the worst impulses of
the American auto industry.” ...

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV’s deal to pool its fleet with Tesla Inc. to
comply with stricter emissions rules in Europe is in effect funding the
electric-car maker’s upcoming Germany factory, according to Robert W. Baird
& Co.

The Italian-American automaker reached an agreement with Tesla last spring
that could cost Fiat Chrysler an estimated 1.8 billion ($2 billion) through
2023. That breaks out to about $150 million to $200 million per quarter and
will pad Tesla’s profit margins starting in the first three months of this
year, according to Baird analyst Ben Kallo.

“While we acknowledge investors may want to strip out credits in evaluating
operational execution, we do note the credits effectively fund Tesla’s
European factory,” Kallo wrote in a report Thursday. While he cut his rating
on Tesla to the equivalent of a hold, from a buy, the analyst raised his
price target to $525, from $355.

Representatives for Fiat Chrysler and Tesla didn’t immediately respond to a
request for comment.

]

Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk announced in November that Tesla planned
to build a plant outside Berlin. The facility is expected to produce Model 3
sedans and Model Y crossovers starting in 2021.

Fiat Chrysler is going to launch a new version of its Fiat 500
battery-powered vehicle in Europe this year, along with plug-in hybrid
versions of its Jeep Compass, Renegade and Wrangler models. That, combined
with the Tesla credits, should make the company compliant with Europe’s
emissions rules, CEO Mike Manley told analysts in July.

While Fiat Chrysler would otherwise struggle to meet new carbon-dioxide
emissions standards in Europe, the so-called open-pool option available in
the European Union allows automakers to group their fleets together to meet
targets. Compliance has gotten harder for automakers as consumers have
shifted toward gasoline cars, which emit comparatively more CO2, following
Volkswagen AG’s diesel-emissions scandal that first erupted in 2015.

Re: [EVDL] early leaf  mile years expectancy

2020-01-11 Thread Lawrence Rhodes via EV
After three Leafs I have some experience. Our first Leaf was a 2012 Lease. By
39k miles and end of lease It could barely do 50 miles. We did not buy that
can.

We did however find a 2013 with 2,400 miles on the odometer for $14k. Nissan
allowed us to pay off the car with a no interest loan. We are still driving
that car. The guessometer is actually very accurate in predicting actual range.
Back in 2015 we would see as much as 131 miles of range. Now in winter we are
seeing mid 80's. Still getting 13 bars. The car has 55k on the clock. It has
been from San Francisco to San Diego three times. First time it took 20 hours
to LA. Lots of fast charger mistakes. No problems yet other than reduced range.
We drive using the two ball method. During warm months we still see one mile of
range per percent of charge. But it is hard to keep it up when driving into the
wind.

Our third Leaf was a 2016 30 kw. Total expenditure $13,550. It is so much more
useful that my wife Bogart's it and has run up the odometer to over 50 k miles
even though that car was bought new a year later. It will make the 90 mile
journey to Sacramento, Stockton, Modesto, Santa Rosa and a little more to
Salinas sometimes. This car still shows 114 to 130 miles of range on a full
charge. It will make it to LA in 11 hours. Stops of Salinas, Camp Roberts, San
Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara. So the bigger the battery the better. This car
still has the original tires. If you drive normally you will not see these
numbers on any Leaf. However I am certain the 40 and 60 kw Leafs will have much
better range and battery life. I would not buy a 2011 or 2012 Leaf unless the
battery was replaced or I got it nearly free. Looking forward I see my first
broken part being the axel boots. Anybody think Armourall will extend their
life? Lawrence Rhodes
