Not everyone lives within a reasonable distance from a fast charger that would otherwise make their potentially long commute with an EV possible. With a PHEV, the gas engine keeps it going even when the battery power runs out, and unlike the traditional hybrid, its larger battery can be plugged in for recharge. In most cases, the PHEV model improves both fuel economy and acceleration when compared to gas-only vehicles.
