Listen To The Sound Of New Formula E Cars
August 15th, 2015 by Steve Hanley

Listen to the sound of the new Formula E cars during pre-season testing at
Silverstone in England. They sound pretty ferocious, don’t they? To my ear,
they are beginning to sound like their Formula One cousins that feature
gasoline-electric hybrid power trains.

Before Formula E racing began, most motor sport addicts (like myself)
assumed that watching electric cars race would be like watching roller derby
with the sound off. Actually, it turned out to be rather good. In the end,
the series championship came down to a single point and was not decided
until the final corner of the final lap of the final race. Racing doesn’t
get much closer than that.

To the surprise of many, the electric race cars actually made some
race-car-like noises. Electric motors are not quite as silent as we thought
they were, especially when operating under heavy load. After the first
season, dozens of cities around the world were asking series CEO, Alejandro
Agag, to add them to the calendar.

The series rules have been carefully crafted. Agag knows his brainchild will
have to walk before it can run. In order to get potential teams interested
in the series in the first place, the original set of rules called for
everyone to campaign the same car — same motor, same battery, same tires,
same aerodynamics, same brakes, and same motor control systems.

For 2015, the rules have been loosened, at least a little. This year, the
teams are free to use their own motor, inverter, gearbox, and cooling
system. The batteries are still the same for everyone, so the objective for
the new year is to use the power available as efficiently as possible.

Perhaps Richard Branson is right when he says Formula E will surpass Formula
One in 5 years. But first, larger batteries that can race for more than a
half hour at a time will be needed. The teams are already working on that.
