The energy giant is planning to build its own EV-charging network in the US and will start working on the project within six months, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke with Bidness Etc. Exxon Mobil decided to enter the EV market as it expects that total plug-in and hybrid EV sales will comprise 40% of total auto sales, as per the company’s report, “The Outlook for Energy: A View to 2040.” The world’s largest energy giant has been aiding electric-charging stations; in the past, Exxon Mobil transferred the assets of its Swiss fuel-supply business, Esso Schweiz, to the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR), which opened EV-charging stations in Switzerland. Considering a strong EV outlook, Exxon Mobile launched its small, all-electric, five-door hatchback (dubbed “Maya 300”) in early 2008, in partnership with electric-battery supplier Electrovaya. The EV had a drive range of 60-120 miles and a top speed of 30 mph. With such major players jumping on the EV bandwagon, it seems that electric cars will rise to fame in the mass market sooner than expected. This is a great sign for Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA), as visionary CEO Elon Musk is already planning to conquer the mass market with the Model 3 by 2017. Currently, there are more than 150 Tesla Superchargers in America, and according to Clean Technica reports, Tesla’s North American charging points outnumber those of rival CHAdeMO. Recently, Volkswagen announced to invest $10 million to support EV-charging networks in the US by 2016, while last month, German luxury automaker BMW announced it will make 100 DC fast chargers in the US. With all these EV-charging initiatives, it’s clear that the electric car is the future of the auto industry.
