Lewis Hamilton’s car of choice is not one you’d expect

HE drives faster than anyone on the planet, his clothes probably cost more
than most people’s cars and he goes to parties you wouldn’t be able to get
into if you haven’t signed thousands of autographs in your life.
But as cool as Lewis Hamilton is, he has a distinctly uncool secret. Well,
it’s not a secret anymore.
Before qualifying at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, the 31-year-old
revealed something you wouldn’t have expected of the man.
“What model are you driving at the moment, as a road car?” Hamilton was
asked.
“A smart car,” said Hamilton. “I have a smart electric.
“It’s really bad because people are like, ‘No you can’t, because you’re a
racing driver.’
“Of course I have some really cool cars but I like driving the electric car
around Monaco (where he lives) because it’s easy to park.
“If someone bumps into it, I don’t mind. You just change the panel.”
OK, so calling it “uncool” is probably a bit harsh — an electric smart car
is better for the environment and obviously perfect for squeezing into tight
parking spots — but it’s so difficult to imagine Lewis Hamilton sitting
behind the wheel of one.
He drives flash Mercedes cars at hundreds of kilometres an hour. He has
earrings. He spends time with glamorous women. He’s won three F1 world
championships. That just doesn’t sound like the resume of a man who drives a
smart car.
But it’s true. Maybe it’s just his way of showing he can relate to the
common man. Maybe he’s on a mission to make smart cars cool, and if anyone
can do that, it’s Hamilton ...
