While the idea of a trike cycle is hardly new – after all Yamaha already has its own Tricity – this one would have its dual wheels in the back with each one powered by its own electric motor. According to Visor Down, the Japanese company submitted for an application on the same vehicle in Europe, as well. The US patent application describes this vehicle as "a two-rear-wheel electric vehicle configured to lean a vehicle body frame thereof when turning." It's not clear exactly how much power its electric motors would produce, but the design appears to be quite similar to the Yamaha EC-03 electric scooter that's already available in Europe, according to Visor Down. That little cycle uses an electric motor with 1.88 horsepower and 7.08 pound-feet of torque to power its single, rear wheel, but it weighs just 123.5 pounds. According to the document from the US Patent and Trademark Office, Yamaha seems to have been working on this concept for a little while. The application says that it first filed for patents on this idea years ago. However, the US only received the documents recently, and they were published in late August. That might indicate that the company is serious about bringing this electric trike to market here. If you really want all of the details about Yamaha's patent, it can be viewed as a PDF, here. Scooters like the Piaggio MP3 and Yamaha’s Tricity have two wheels at the front and a third wheel at the rear - this scooter will get a conventional single front wheel and two rear wheels, each powered by an electric hub motor. The patents focus on the electric motor controller and decreasing the weight of the battery and extra wheel. The diagrams show a scooter that closely resembles the Yamaha EC-03 electric scooter, currently on sale in Europe for £1,199. It looks to share the same front end, frame, seat and battery location as the EC-03, but uses an extra wheel and swingarm, and a design allowing it to lean. The two-wheeled EC-03 makes 1.4kW of power at 2,550rpm and produces its maximum 7.1ftlb of torque at only 280rpm. Its minimal design and lightweight 50V/15Ah Lithium-ion battery means it weighs only 56kg ready-to-ride.
