Re: [EVDL] used fiat 500e

It would be good to verify that you can get service reasonably close
though. I had a similar love-with-an-orphan-vehicle situation in that I
had a Smart EV for 3 years. I really liked the car. I had leased it and
was trying to decide between buying it and leasing another when the only
dealer in my state decided they weren't going to sell the Smarts any
more. And then, shortly after, Daimler decided not to sell them in the
US at all. I never had any trouble with the car but wasn't willing to
take the risk of not being able to get it repaired. Instead I got a
Chevy Bolt. Possibly the best car I ever owned. I will say, I really
loved that the Smart had a real tailgate though. I used the car as a
mobile workshop quite often. Working with tools out of the back of the
Bolt was far more awkward.

55 or 60 mph. In 100 to 115F weather with the AC on (like your 30F with the
heater on) it would travel 35 to 45 miles and keep above the 10% charge
turtle mode.

My wife wants a small car and the 500e would be a great fit. It *should*
have substantially better range than our old leaf but I want to hear
from other people.

- what 70F range do you get for city driving ? ...for highway driving ?
- what 30F (with heat & defrost) range city ? highway ?

Any significant concerns about the car ?

Peri,
I was a tad negative about the Fiat 500e in my response. I was pretty happy

The 120 volt charger that comes with it is run at 240 volts in Europe. You
can build an adapter or change the cord end to run it at 240 volts. I
bought a used 240 volt charger that I never installed because the little
120 volt charger run at 240 was fast enough to charge the car fully
overnight, except for one or two times.
I almost bought a receiver hitch to install. I found some rims on
E-bay that fit and installed those, going up a tire size. The local tire
company quoted me a high price for the original size tires. In all
fairness, I did not search very hard for affordable tires. I found low cost
tires easily for the new rims. The navigation system is a unit that is
removable that drops into the top of the dash. It may not come with a used
vehicle, but can be purchased on E-bay. I did not take the time to get used
to it.
I was seriously considering a Nissan Leaf when at the last minute the Fiat
500e was available at a comparable price. I liked the looks of the Fiat,
the range numbers were higher, and I jumped. I think the Leaf with 4 doors
would work better for passengers. The Fiat can handle a lot of cargo with
the rear seats folded down, and two adults comfortably in the front.

Peri,

Run, don't walk away. The Fiat 500e has no parts availability and parts are
expensive. A $70 cooling pump on a Prius is $700 on the Fiat. And dealers
in Southern California and Arizona are dropping Fiat. I just sold my 2015.
Talk to a servicing dealer first before any purchase. The battery pack is
water cooled and not serviceable easily like the Leaf. The Leaf has more
units sold and therefore more interest in parts and repair. Sorry for being
negative, I really love electric vehicles. I put 30,000 miles on the Fiat
and did not purchase gas in 3 years. But I needed parts and computer help
to keep it going. The dealer wanted $2,400 to replace one of the two
cooling pumps. My wife is now saying no to future electric vehicles (but I
see a used golf cart in my future). Others will have better experience I am
sure.
